Regional Heterogeneity in 3D m.ocardial Shortening in Hypertensive Left Ventricular Hypertrophy: A Cardiovascular Cm. Tagging Substudy to the Life Study

Background: Increased relative wall thickness in hypertensive left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) has been shown by echocardiography to allow preserved shortening at the endocardium.despite depressed LV m.dwall circum.erential shortening (m.CS). Depressed m.CS is an adverse prognostic indicator, but whether this finding reflects reduced global or regional LV m.ocardial function, as assessed by three-dim.nsional (3D) m.ocardial strain, is unknown. m.thods and Results: Cardiac m.gnetic Resonance (Cm.) tissue tagging perm.ts direct evaluation of regional 3D intram.ocardial strain, independent of LV geom.try. We evaluated 21 hypertensive patients with electrocardiographic LVH in the LIFE study and 8 norm.l controls using 3D m. tagging and echocardiography. Patients had higher m. LV m.ss than norm.ls (116 ± 40 versus 63 ± 6 g/m., P = 0.002). Neither echocardiographic fractional shortening (32 ± 6 versus 33% ± 3%), LVEF (63% versus 64%) or m.an end-systolic stress (175 ± 27 versus 146 ± 28 g/cm.) were significantly different, yet global m.CS was decreased by both echocardiography (13.4 ± 2.8 versus 18.2% ± 1.5%, P P P = 0.002) in LVH and greater in lateral and anterior regions versus septal and posterior regions ( P P P 0.60, P = 0.001 for both). Conclusions: In patients with hypertensive LVH, despite norm.l LV function via echocardiography or Cm., Cm. intram.ocardial tagging show depressed global m.CS while 3D m. strain revealed m.rked underlying regional heterogeneity of LV dysfunction.

Spinal cord injury rem.ins a m.jor cause of disability in young adults,and beyond acute decom.ression and rehabilitation,there are no pharm.cological treatm.nts to lim.t the progression of injury and optim.ze recovery in this *** the thorough investigation of the com.lem.nt system.in triggering and propagating cerebral neuroinflam.ation,a sim.lar role for com.lem.nt in spinal neuroinflam.ation is a focus of ongoing *** this work,we survey the current literature investigating the role of com.lem.nt in spinal cord injury including the sources of com.lem.nt proteins,triggers of com.lem.nt activation,and role of effector functions in the *** study relevant data dem.nstrating the different triggers of com.lem.nt activation after spinal cord injury including direct binding to cellular debris,and or activation via antibody binding to dam.ge-associated m.lecular *** effector functions of com.lem.nt have been im.licated in spinal cord injury,and we critically evaluate recent studies on the dual role of com.lem.nt anaphylatoxins in spinal cord injury while em.hasizing the lack of pathophysiological understanding of the role of opsonins in spinal cord *** this pathophysiological review,we system.tically review the different translational approaches used in preclinical m.dels of spinal cord injury and discuss the challenges for future translation into hum.n *** review em.hasizes the need for future studies to dissect the roles of different com.lem.nt pathways in the pathology of spinal cord injury,to evaluate the phases of involvem.nt of opsonins and anaphylatoxins,and to study the role of com.lem.nt in white m.tter degeneration and regeneration using translational strategies to supplem.nt genetic m.dels.

Rem.ving am.onia from.air with a constant pH, slightly acidic water spray wet scrubber using recycled scrubbing solution

Previous research on wet scrubbers has only studied highly acidic scrubbing solutions because of their high am.onia capture efficiencies; however, the high acidity created practical problem.. Lower acidity solutions would reduce corrosion, m.intenance, and cost; however, designers m.y need to use strategies for increasing scrubber effectiveness, such as using lower air velocities. The objective of this studywas to determ.ne if a spray scrubber with slightly acidic and higher p H scrubbing solution （pH from.2 to 8） could effectively rem.ve NH3 from.NH3 laden air （such as anim.l building exhaust air）, and also collect this valuable resource for rater use as a fertilizer. A bench-scale spray wet scrubber treated 20 ppm. NH3/air m.xture in a countercurrent contact cham.er. First, the solution pH was varied from.2 to 8while m.intaining constant air velocity at 1.3 m. s-1. Next, air velocity was increased （2and 3 m.s-1） while solution pH rem.ined constant at pH6. At 1.3 m.s -1, NH3 rem.val efficiencies ranged between 49.0% （pH8） and 84.3% （pH2）. This study has shown that slightly acidic scrubbing solutions are a practical m.ans of rem.ving am.onia from.air especially if the scrubber is designed to increase collisions between solution droplets and NH3 m.lecules. The NH3 rem.ved from.the air was held in solution as NH4＋ and accum.lates over tim. so the solution should be an excellent fertilizer.

Hydrogen peroxide m.diates pro-inflam.atory cell-to-cell signaling: a new therapeutic target for inflam.ation?

Nitric oxide is now universally recognized as an extracellular signaling m.lecule. Nitric oxide, produced in one cell, diffuses across the extracellular space and acts with targets in an adjoining cell. In this study, we present proof that hydrogen peroxide - like nitric oxide - acts as a true first (intercellular) m.ssenger for a m.ltitude of pro-inflam.atory ligands. RAW 264.7 m.crophages were activated with three different ligands, lipopolysaccharide, interferon-gam.a or advanced glycation end products in the presence of increasing concentrations of (hydrogen peroxide scavenging) catalase. As inflam.atory readouts, nitric oxide and tum.r necrosis factor were determ.ned. We hypothesize that hydrogen peroxide travels between cells propagating the signal, then a certain percentage of the readout should be inhibited by catalase in a concentration- dependent m.nner. The experim.nt showed concentration-dependent inhib让ion of nitric oxide and tum.r necrosis factor-a production in response to all three ligands/ligand com.inations (interferon-gam.a, lipopolysaccharide, and chicken egg album.n-derived advanced glycation end product) in the presence of increasing concentration of catalase. For exam.le, catalase inhibited 100% of nitric oxide and 40% of tum.r necrosis factor-a production at its highest concentration. Our results suggest that hydrogen peroxide travels through cell m.m.ranes into the extracellular space and enters and activates ad;acent cells. Like rdtric oxide, we suggest that it is a ubiquitous first m.ssenger, able to transm.t cell-to-cell pro-inflam.atory signals such as nitric oxide and tum.r necrosis factor-a. In a therapeutic setting, our data suggest that com.ounds acting as hydrogen peroxide scavengers m.ght not even need to enter the cell to act as anti-inflam.atory drugs.

Aggregation is one of the m.ny im.ortant processes in chem.cal and process engineering. Several researchers have attem.ted to understand this com.lex process in fluidized beds using the m.cro-m.del of population balance equations （PBEs）. The aggregation kernel is an effective param.ter in PBEs, and is defined as the product of the aggregation efficiency and collision frequency functions. Attem.ts to derive this kernel have taken different approaches, including theoretical, experim.ntal, and em.irical techniques. The present paper calculates the aggregation kernel using m.cro-m.del com.uter sim.lations, i.e., a discrete particle m.del. We sim.late the m.cro-m.del without aggregation for various initial conditions, and observe that the collision frequency function is in good agreem.nt with the shear kernel. We then sim.late the m.cro-m.del with aggregation and calculate the aggregation efficiency rate.
