Smarter in the city?Lizards from urban and semi-natural habitats do not differ in a cognitive task in two syntopic species

Urbanization occurs at a global scale,imposing dramatic and abrupt environmental changes that lead to biodiversity ***,some animal species can handle these changes,and thrive in such artifcial *** possible explanation is that urban individuals are equipped with better cognitive abilities,but most studies have focused on birds and mammals and yielded varied *** have received much less attention,despite some lizard species being common city *** Italian wall lizard,Podarcis siculus,and the common wall lizard,Podarcis muralis,are two successful lizards in anthropogenic habitats that thrive in urban *** test for differences in a cognitive skill between urban and semi-natural environments,we investigated inhibitory control through a detour task in syntopic populations of the two species,across 249 lizards that were tested in partially artifcial feld *** inhibitory control is considered essential for higher degrees of cognitive fexibility and other higher-level cognitive *** this task,we confronted lizards with a transparent barrier,separating them from a desired shelter area that they could only reach by controlling their impulse to go straight and instead detour the *** found no differences between lizards in urban and semi-natural environments,nor between species,but females overall performed better than ***,48%of the lizards in our study did not perform a correct trial in any of the 5 trials,hinting at the diffculty of the task for these *** study is among the frst to address lizard cognition,through their inhibitory control,as a potential explanation for success in cities and highlights one should be careful with assuming that urban animals generally have enhanced cognitive performance,as it might be taxa,task,or condition dependent.

A highly concentrated vanadium protic ionic liquid electrolyte for the vanadium redox flow battery

A protic ionic liquid is designed and implemented for the first time as a solvent for a high energy density vanadium redox flow *** being less conductive than standa rd aqueous electrolytes,it is thermally stable on a 100 ℃ temperature window,chemically stable for at least 60 days,equally viscous and dense with typical aqueous solvents and most importantly able to solubilize to 6 mol L^(-1) vanadium sulfate,thus increasing the VRFB energy density by a factor of *** measurements revealed quasi-reversible redox transitions for both catholyte and anolyte at 25 ℃ while a proof-of-concept redox flow cell with the proposed electrolyte was tested for a total of 150 cycles at 25 ℃,showing an open circuit potential of 1.39 V and energy and coulombic efficiencies of 65% and 93%,***’s more,the battery can be equally cycled at 45℃ showing good thermal *** study underlines a new route to improve the energy-to-volume ratio of energy storage system.

The electrolyte is an essential component of a battery system since it is responsible for the conduction of ions between the *** the quest for cheaper alternatives to common organic electrolytes for lithium-ion batteries(LIB),we formulated hybrid electrolytes comprising a mixture of Na,K,and Li alkaline salts with ethylene carbonate(EC),ethyl methyl carbonate(EmC),and lithium hexafluorophosphate(LiPF_(6)),giving a total salt concentration of 1.5 m;we determined their physicochemical properties and investigated their electrochemical behavior on a nickel cobalt aluminum oxide(NCA)cathode and graphite(Gr)*** electrolytes demonstrated a melting transition peak(T_(m)).eutectic behavior,and ionic conductivities(-13 mS cm^(-1))close to those of a commercial LIB electrolyte(SE,EC/EmC+1 m LiPF_(6))and activation energies of ca.3 kJ mol^(-1).The half-cell coin cells revealed high coulombic efficiency(99%),specific capacity(175 mAh g^(-1) at C/10),and capacity retention(92% for NaCF_(3)SO_(3))for the NCA cathode and a moderate performance(coulombic efficiency of 98%for 20 cycles)on the graphite anode after the formation of the SEI *** hybrid electrolytes were cycled at 25℃ in a Gr//NCA cell yielding specific capacities of ca.225 mAh g^(-1) at a C/5 rate,corroborating that the anion plays a key role and highlighting their potential for energy storage applications.

Particle Paths of Lagrangian Velocity Distribution Simulating the Spiral Arms of Galaxy m51

Galaxies are huge families of stars held together by their own gravities. The system m51 is a spiral galaxy. It possesses billions of stars. The range of the spiral arms extends hundred thousand light years. The present study is in an attempt in using the particle paths of the Lagrangian flow field to simulate the spiral arms of Galaxy m51. The Lagrangian flow field is introduced. The initial locations of fluid particles in the space between two concen- tric cylinders are ftrst specified. Then a linear velocity distribution of the fluid particles is used with different an- gle rotations of the particles to obtain the particle paths in the Lagrangian diagram. For simulating the spiral arms of Galaxy m51, the Lagrangian m51 diagram is developed. The particle paths of the Lagrangian m51 diagram agree quite well with the spiral arms of Galaxy m51.

An accurate model for the thin film flow

This paper deals with the linear stability of a liquid film flowing down an inclined plane. The Navier-Stokes equations were reduced into four evolution equations that describe the development of the film depth, the flow rate, the free surface velocity, and the wall shear stress, using the Karman-Polhausen boundary layer integral method. Thus, we were able to determine the stability threshold and approach well the critical wave number for long waves. The obtained results were found to be in good agreement with the experiments of Liu et al.

On the refracted patterns produced by liquid vortices

A theoretical analysis of the refracted shadows produced by steady and time-decaying liquid vortices under uniform illumination from above is given in this article. An expression for the induced shadow intensity is derived and found to be a function of the vortex＇s free surface profile, i.e., function of the static pressure distribution. The patterns for different focusing depth are given and compared with previous visualization results from the literature. The phenomenon is examined and illustrated as a bench mark case by using both steady and time-decaying algebraic vortex models. However, this study can be extended to check the feasibility of recovering the main flow properties by analyzing the luminous image intensity of the refracted patterns. The present analysis is valid only when the swirl velocity is order of magnitude higher than the meridional flow components and the vorticity is concentrated within the core region and of intense conditions.

The Hansen solubility parameters(HSP)are frequently used for solvent selection and characterization of polymers,and are directly related to the suspension behavior of pigments in solvent *** performance of currently available group contribution(GC)methods for HSP were evaluated and found to be insufficient for computer-aided product design(CAPD)of paints and coatings.A revised and,for this purpose,improved GC method is presented for estimating HSP of organic compounds,intended for organic *** to the significant limitations of GC methods,an uncertainty analysis and parameter confidence intervals are provided in order to better quantify the estimation accuracy of the proposed *** to other applicable GC methods,the prediction error is reduced significantly with average absolute errors of 0.45 mPa^(1/2),1.35 mPa^(1/2),and 1.09 mPa^(1/2) for the partial dispersion(δD),polar(δP)and hydrogen-bonding(δH)solubility parameters respectively for a database of 1106 *** performance for organic pigments is comparable to the overall method performance,with higher average errors forδD and lower average errors forδP andδH.

Fragility assessment of wood sheathing panels and roof-to-wall connections subjected to wind loading

The performance of the wood-frame buildings after tornadoes has shown that the majority of the wind damage resulted from building envelope failure most typically due to the loss of the *** assess the performance and the reliability of low-rise wood-frame residential buildings with a focus on the roofs,fragility analysis can be used to estimate the probability of failure of a roof when constructed with specified nails and sheathing ***,this paper examines the fragility of specific types of nails,roof-to-wall(RW)connection details,and sheathing sizes based on the damaged roofs that were previously assessed in the Dunrobin area in Ottawa(Ontario)that was hit with an Enhanced Fujita(EF3)tornado on September 21,*** presented fragility analysis considers four scenarios,including different sheathing and nail *** loads,wind loads,and resistance on the sheathing panels were compiled and analyzed to determine the failure of the examined *** eight fragility models suggest that the safest roof sheathing(RS)is the 1.22 m×1.22 m sheathing panel with 8 d nails,and the safest RW connections is achieved by using H2.5 hurricane clips.
