As superficial structures,non-glandular trichomes,protect plant organs against multiple biotic and abiotic *** protective and defensive roles of these epidermal appendages are crucial to developing organs and can be attributed to the excellent combination of suitable structural traits and chemical reinforcement in the form of phenolic compounds,primarily fl *** the formation of trichomes and the accumulation of phenolics are interrelated at the molecular *** the early stages of development,non-glandular trichomes show strong morphological similarities to glandular ones such as the balloon-like apical cells with numerous *** later developmental stages,and during secondary wall thickening,phenolics are transferred to the cell walls of the *** to the diff use deposition of phenolics in the cell walls,trichomes provide protection against UV-B radiation by behaving as optical fi lters,screening out wavelengths that could damage sensitive *** from strong visible radiation is also aff orded by increased surface light refl ***,the mixtures of trichome phenolics represent a superfi-cial chemical barrier that provides protection against biotic stress factors such as herbivores and *** the cells of some trichomes die at maturity,they can modulate their quantitative and qualitative characteristics during development,depending on the prevailing conditions of the external biotic or abiotic *** fact,the structure and chemical constituents of trichomes may change due to the particular light regime,herbivore damage,wounding,water stress,salinity and the presence of heavy ***,trichomes represent dynamic protective structures that may greatly aff ect the outcome of many plant–environment interactions.

Advances and challenges in laparoscopic surgery in the management of hepatocellular carcinoma

Hepatocellular carcinoma is the fifth most common malignancy and the third most common cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. From the wide variety of treatment options, surgical resection and liver transplantation are the only therapeutic ones. However, due to shortage of liver grafts, surgical resection is the most common therapeutic modality implemented. Owing to rapid technological development, minimally invasive approaches have been incorporated in liver surgery. Liver laparoscopic resection has been evaluated in comparison to the open technique and has been shown to be superior because of the reported decrease in surgical incision length and trauma, blood loss, operating theatre time, postsurgical pain and complications, R0 resection, length of stay, time to recovery and oral intake. It has been reported that laparoscopic excision is a safe and feasible approach with near zero mortality and oncologic outcomes similar to open resection. Nevertheless, current indications include solid tumors in the periphery pecially in segments Ⅱ through Ⅵ, while according to the consensus laparoscopic major hepatectomy should only be performed by surgeons with high expertise in laparoscopic and hepatobiliary surgery in tertiary centers. It is necessary for a surgeon to surpass the 60-cases learning curve observed in order to accomplish the desirable outcomes and preserve patient safety. In this review, our aim is to thoroughly describe the general principles and current status of laparoscopic liver resection for hepatocellular carcinoma, as well as future prospects.

Kasai procedure(Kp)and liver transplantation(LT)represent the only therapeutic options for patients with biliary atresia(BA),the most common indication for LT in the pediatric ***,Kp represents by no means a radical option but rather a bridging one,as nearly all patients will finally require a liver *** and more experts in the field of transplant surgery propose that maybe it is time for a paradigm change in BA treatment and abandon Kp as transplantation seems *** of organs yet makes this option currently not feasible,so it seems useful to find ways to maximize the efficacy of *** previous decades,multiple studies tried to identify these factors which opt for better results,but in general,outcomes of Kp have not improved to the level that was *** review provides the framework of conditions which favor native liver survival after Kp and the ones which optimize a positive LT *** of transition of care at the right time are also presented,as transplantation plays a key role in the surgical treatment of *** studies and further organization in the transplant field will allow for greater organ availability and better outcomes to be achieved for BA patients.

New instability and mixing simulations using SpH and a novel mixing measure

This paper assesses the ability of smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SpH) to simulate mixing of two-phase flows and theirtransition to instabilities under different flow regimes. A new measure for quantification of the degree of mixing between phases in aLagrangian framework is also developed. The method is validated using the lid-driven cavity and two-phase poiseuille flow cases. Thevelocity along the centre of the cavity is compared with results from the literature, whilst commercial volume-of-fluid codeSTAR-CCM+ provides a benchmark for the mixing and different mixing measures are considered. The velocity of two-phase poiseuilleflow along the channel is compared to the analytical solution, and the appearance of interfacial instabilities with perturbation *** is the first time SpH has been used to investigate the onset and development of these instabilities. In particular, it is able to modelthe deforming shape of the interface, which is not given by analytical studies, while also offering improved predictions overconventional mesh-based computational fluid dynamics simulations.

Modified deep sclerectomy combined with Ex-pRESS filtration device versus trabeculectomy for primary open angle glaucoma

AIM：To compare the efficacy of modified deep sclerectomy combined with Ex-pRESS shunt versus trabeculectomy in primary open angle glaucoma. METHODS：This is a prospective cohort comparative single-center study. Forty-nine eyes of 49 patients were enrolled in the study. patients were randomly divided into two groups. Group A（22 patients） underwent classic trabeculectomy and group B（27 patients） underwent modified deep sclerectomy combined with insertion of Ex-pRESS model p50 drainage device. RESULTS：Mean age was 69±7y in group A and 64±8y in group B（p=0.03）. The mean reduction was 11.1±5.7 mm Hg in group A compared to 15.8±5.7 mm Hg in group B at 6mo（p=0.006）, and 9.8±4.9 mm Hg and 15.4±4.7 mm Hg respectively at 1y（p=0.0001）. Regarding the postoperative glaucoma medication, significant difference was observed between the two groups（in favour of group B） only at 6mo（p=0.017）. At the end of the follow-up period complete success rate in group A was 68.2% compared to 92.6% in group B（χ^2 test, p=0.07） and qualified success rate was 100% in both ***：Modified deep sclerectomy combined with Ex-pRESS shunt may provide comparable IOp reduction with fewer complications in management of primary open angle glaucoma.

Deleting Outliers in Robust Regression with Mixed Integer programming

In robust regression we often have to decide how many are the unusualobservations, which should be removed from the sample in order to obtain better fitting for the restof the observations. Generally, we use the basic principle of LTS, which is to fit the majority ofthe data, identifying as outliers those points that cause the biggest damage to the robust ***, in the LTS regression method the choice of default values for high break down-point affectsseriously the efficiency of the estimator. In the proposed approach we introduce penalty cost fordiscarding an outlier, consequently, the best fit for the majority of the data is obtained bydiscarding only catastrophic observations. This penalty cost is based on robust design weights andhigh break down-point residual scale taken from the LTS estimator. The robust estimation is obtainedby solving a convex quadratic mixed integer programming problem, where in the objective functionthe sum of the squared residuals and penalties for discarding observations is minimized. Theproposed mathematical programming formula is suitable for small-sample data. Moreover, we conduct asimulation study to compare other robust estimators with our approach in terms of their efficiencyand robustness.

Life cycle assessment of open field and greenhouse cultivation of lettuce and barley

In the present paper,a life cycle assessment(LCA)study regarding barley and lettuce production in Spain(Barrax and Santomera regions)and Italy(Albenga region)in both open field(OF)and standard greenhouse(GH)cultivations was performed in order to evaluate energy consumption and environmental *** study examines also the impact of the use of compost produced from agricultural wastes(AW).In this context,a detailed life cycle directory was created,based on site-specific experimental data,and used for a holistic cradle-to-gate LCA analysis using the GaBi 6 software package and specific related *** order to reveal the importance of system boundaries,factors that are often excluded from LCA studies,such as agricultural machinery manufacture,nursery production,waste management and raw materials transportation have been *** to the results of this study,the use of compost for fertilization of both crops is considered a good agronomic and ecological strategy in order to maintain productivity in terms of yield,especially in the case of greenhouse cultivation,and improve overall sustainability in the agricultural ***,the phases of compost production,irrigation system,and greenhouse construction and operation were identified as the three main‘‘hotspots”with the highest environmental impact and energy contribution in all studied ***,improvements to reduce those impacts were proposed.

Totally laparoscopic left hepatectomy using the Torsional Ultrasonic Scalpel

Minimal invasive techniques have allowed for major surgical *** report our initial experience of performing total laparoscopic left hepatectomy(segmentsⅡ-Ⅳ)with the Lotus(laparoscopic operation by torsional ultrasound)Ultrasonic *** perioperative and postoperative courses of the young female patient were uneventful and she is in a good general condition without complaints 18 mo after *** the best of our knowledge,this is the first total laparoscopic hemihepatectomy to be performed in Greece,as well as the first laparoscopic liver resection using Lotus shears.
