Sexual Attitudes among College Students: An Approach in Mexico

Objective: To develop a predictive model for HIV/AIDS in the sexual behavior of university students from a public university in the state of Guanajuato. Methodology: Correlational study involved 294 university students from 18 to 19 years of age by stratified random sampling. The instruments used were: attitudes, subjective norms, self-efficacy and intentions for HIV/AIDS and sexual behavior. Descriptive statistics, normality test of Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, Spearman correlation and logistic regression was used. Results: In describing sexual behavior of young students at the beginning of sexual life is observed that 61.9% of them have had sexual life, with higher per- centage in men. Of the 182 university students who reported first sexual intercourse used a contraceptive method 138 and 135 specifically used a condom the first time they had sex. The variables that have the ability to predict the sex drive at the start of sexual life, are the attitudes and perceived behavioral control (X2 = 39,638, df = 4, p < 0.000), reporting a 12.6% of explained variance. Conclusions: In general, university students today are perceived as vulnerable to sexual behavior and have safe sex, which leads us to think that protect not get HIV/AIDS and unwanted pregnancies.

CD4^(+)T cells integrate well-defined signals from the T-cell receptor(TCR)(signal 1)and a host of costimulatory molecules(signal 2)to initiate clonal expansion and differentiation into diverse functional T helper(Th)***,our ability to guide the expansion of context-appropriate Th subsets by deploying these signals in vaccination remains *** cell-based vaccines,we selectively amplified signal 1 by exclusive presentation of an optimized peptide:MHC II(pMHC II)complex in the absence of classic *** to expectations,amplified signal 1 alone was strongly immunogenic and selectively expanded highaffinity TCR clonotypes,despite delivering intense TCR *** contrast to natural infection or standard vaccines,amplified signal 1,presented by a variety of professional and nonprofessional antigen-presenting cells(APCs),induced exclusively polyfunctional Th1 effector and memory cells,which protected against retroviral infection and tumor challenge,and expanded tumor-reactive CD4^(+)T cells otherwise rendered unresponsive in tumor-bearing ***,our findings uncover a default Th1 response to ample signal 1 and offer a means to selectively prime such protective responses by vaccination.

HIF-1α pathway: role, regulation and intervention for cancer therapy

Hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) has been recognized as an important cancer drug target. Many recent studies have provided convincing evidences of strong correlation between elevated levels of HIF-1 and tumor metastasis, angiogenesis, poor patient prognosis as well as tumor resistance therapy. It was found that hypoxia (low O2 levels) is a common character in many types of solid tumors. As an adaptive response to hypoxic stress, hypoxic tumor cells activate several survival pathways to carry out their essential biological processes in different ways compared with normal cells. Recent advances in cancer biology at the cellular and molecular levels highlighted the HIF-1α pathway as a crucial survival pathway for which novel strategies of cancer therapy could be developed. However, targeting the HIF-1α pathway has been a challenging but promising progresses have been made in the past twenty years. This review summarizes the role and regulation of the HIF-1α in cancer, and recent therapeutic approaches targeting this important pathway.

Subtypes of functional dyspepsia

Functional dyspepsia is a common clinical condition characterised by chronic or recurrent upper abdominal pain or discomfort commonly associated with a variety of associated gastrointestinal symptoms and a normal endoscopy. To standardise research-based approaches, an initial categorisation of into sub groups was agreed to, based on clusters of symptoms. However the early expectation that these subgroups would be associated with distinct pathophysiologies amenable to specific therapy has not been realised. A classification based on the most troublesome symptom has been suggested but the utility of this is also unclear. More recent data suggest that some of the pathophysiologic dysfunctions may be associated with specific symptoms and so provide a better tool for grouping patients. But this approach remains incomplete as current insights into the pathogenesis are still too limited for this to be satisfactory. In conclusion, no classification provides for an adequate treatment-based approach to the syndrome of functional dyspepsia. As a consequence treatment remains largely empiric.

New instability and mixing simulations using SPH and a novel mixing measure

This paper assesses the ability of smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) to simulate mixing of two-phase flows and theirtransition to instabilities under different flow regimes. A new measure for quantification of the degree of mixing between phases in aLagrangian framework is also developed. The method is validated using the lid-driven cavity and two-phase Poiseuille flow cases. Thevelocity along the centre of the cavity is compared with results from the literature, whilst commercial volume-of-fluid codeSTAR-CCM+ provides a benchmark for the mixing and different mixing measures are considered. The velocity of two-phase Poiseuilleflow along the channel is compared to the analytical solution, and the appearance of interfacial instabilities with perturbation *** is the first time SPH has been used to investigate the onset and development of these instabilities. In particular, it is able to modelthe deforming shape of the interface, which is not given by analytical studies, while also offering improved predictions overconventional mesh-based computational fluid dynamics simulations.

Transcriptional Regulation and Signaling in Phosphorus Starvation: What About Legumes?

The availability of soil phosphorus （P）, an essential element, is one of the most important requirements for plant growth and crop production. The morphological and physiological adaptations evolved by plants to cope with P starvation have been well characterized. Several P deficiency plant responses are regulated at the transcriptional level. Microarray analysis has generated valuable information on global gene expression in Arabidopsis thaliana grown under P-stress. Despite the identification of P responsive genes, little is known about the regulation of gene expression changes. Four transcription factors, PHRI, WRKY75, ZAT6 and BHLH32, involved in P starvation signaling have been characterized in Arabidopsis, and signaling pathways are deciphered. This review analyzes the current knowledge of transcriptional regulation of P starvation responses in Arabidopsis vis-a-vis legumes such as lupine, common bean and Medicago truncatula. The knowledge on regulatory and signaling mechanisms involved in P acquisition and use in legumes will be useful for improvement of these crops, which account for a large proportion of the world＇s crop production, providing good nutritional quality feed and food.

In analyses of protein families that may serve as drug targets,membrane-associated G-protein-coupled receptors(GPCRs)dominate,followed by ion channels,transporters,and—to a lesser extent—membrane-bound ***,various challenges put such membrane proteins among key groups of underutilized opportunities for the application of therapeutic *** hold the promise of exquisite specificity,as they are able to target even specific conformations of a particular membrane protein,as well as adaptability through engineering into various antibody ***,the ease of raising and isolating specific,effective antibodies targeting membrane proteins depends on many *** particular,the generation of specific antibodies is easier when targeting larger,simpler,extracellular domains with greater uniqueness of amino acid *** rareness of such ideal conditions is illustrated by the limited number of approved biologics for targeting GPCRs and other complex membrane *** in developing antibodies to complex membrane proteins such as GPCRs,ion channels,transporters,and membrane-bound enzymes can be addressed by the design of the antigen,antibody-generation strategies,lead optimization technologies,and antibody modalities.A better understanding of the membrane proteins being targeted would facilitate mechanism-based drug *** review describes the advantages and challenges of targeting complex membrane proteins with antibodies and discusses the preparation of membrane protein antigens and antibody generation,illustrated by select examples of success.

Circulation of the low pathogenic avian influenza subtype H5N2 virus in ducks at a live bird market in Ibadan, Nigeria

Background:To monitor carrier hosts of avian influenza in Nigeria,we randomly collected cloaca swab specimens from 155 ducks at a live bird market(LBM)in Ibadan,southwest Nigeria,between July 2011 and July ***:The samples were analyzed by real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR)and virus isolation was carried out in embryonated chicken *** sequencing of the antigenic cleavage site of the haemagglutinin(HA)gene was performed,multiple sequence alignment was carried out using ClustalW,and a phylogenetic tree was constructed using the neighbor joining ***:Twenty(13%)of the 155 samples were positive for avian influenza subtype H5N2 by real-time RT-PCR and three isolates were obtained from embryonated chicken *** sequencing of the amino acid cleavage site of the HA genes of two isolates corresponded to a PQRETGL*F sequence that is common in low pathogenic avian influenza(LPAI).Phylogenetically,the HA genes of the two influenza viruses are monophyletic and clustered with H5N2 viruses detected in wild ducks from ***:The occurrence of LPAI in domestic ducks in Nigeria underscores the importance of continuous surveillance and monitoring of the virus(in a country that is considered to be free of avian influenza)in order to prevent the emergence of virulent strains that may spread to commercial poultry and humans.
