Light and electron microscopic study of the medial collateral ligament epiligament tissue in human knees

AIM To examine the normal morphology of the epiligament tissue of the knee medial collateral ligament(MCL) in humans. METHODS Several samples of the mid-substance of the MCL of the knee joint from 7 fresh human cadavers(3 females and 4 males) were taken. Examination of the epiligament tissue was conducted by light microscopy and photomicrography on semi-thin sections of formalin fixed paraffin-embedded blocks that were routinely stained with haematoxylin and eosin, Mallory stain and Van Gieson's stain. Electron microscopy of the epiligament tissue was performed on ultra-thin sections incubated in 1% osmium tetroxide and contrasted with 2.5% uranyl acetate, lead nitrate, and sodium *** The current light microscopic study demonstrated that the epiligament of the MCL consisted of fibroblasts, fibrocytes, adipocytes, neuro-vascular bundles and numerous multidirectional collagen fibers. In contrast, the ligament body was poorly vascularised, composed of hypo-cellular fascicles which were formed of longitudinal groups of collagen fibers. Moreover, most of the vessels of the epiligament-ligament complex were situated in the epiligament tissue. The electron microscopic study revealed fibroblasts with various shapes in the epiligament substance. All of them had the ultrastructural characteristics of active cells with large nuclei, well developed rough endoplasmic reticulum, multiple ribosomes, poorly developed Golgi apparatus, elliptical mitochondria and oval lysosomes. The electron microscopy also confirmed the presence of adipocytes, mast cells, myelinated and unmyelinated nerve fibers and chaotically oriented collagen *** Significant differences exist between the normal structure of the ligament and the epiligament whose morphology and function is to be studied further.

The interaction of the structure-directing agent with the zeolite framework determines germanium distribution in SCM-15 germanosilicate

We report results from computational modeling of the relative stability of germanosilicate SCM-15 structure due to different distribution of germanium heteroatoms in the double four-member rings(D4Rs)of the framework and the orientation of the structure directing agent(SDA)molecules in the as-synthesized *** calculated relative energies of the bare zeolite framework suggest that structures with germanium ions clustered in the same D4Rs,e.g.,with large number of Ge–O-Ge contacts,are the most *** simulations of various orientations of the SDA in the pores of the germanosilicate zeolite show different stability order-the most stable models are the structures with germanium spread among all ***,for SCM-15 the stabilization due to the presence of the SDA and their orientation,is thermodynamic factor directing both the formation of specific framework type and Ge distribution in the framework during the *** relative stability of bare structures with different germanium distribution is of minor *** differs from SCM-14 germanosilicate,reported earlier,for which the stability order is preserved in presence of ***,even for zeolites with the same chemical composition and SDA,the characteristics of their framework lead to different energetic preference for germanium distribution.

Effect of autologous serum after amniotic membrane transplantation for persistent corneal ulcers

AIM:To investigate the effect of adding autologous serum eye drops to the postoperative regime after amniotic membrane transplantation for severe persistent corneal ***:Forty eyes of 40 patients with persistent corneal ulcers were randomly assigned to artificial tears(sodium hyaluronate 0.2%,ATs group,n=20)or autologous serum eye drops(ASEDs,n=20)following treatment with amniotic membrane *** slit lamp images were acquired from all patients before and 30d post *** area with fibrovascular tissue was calculated using Image *** corneal sensitivity was assessed by Cochet-Bonnet aesthesiometry before and one month after *** tissue transparency was assessed with a novel optical ***:Mean age of patients was 61.65±16.47y and 57.3±19.11y in the ATs group and ASEDs group,***-two male and 18 female patients were included in the *** improvement in visual acuity was significantly greater in the ASEDs group(0.14±0.04)than the ATs(0.08±0.04;P=0.00046).Cochet-Bonnet aesthesiometry improved significantly after treatment with a similar rate between *** were no statistically significant differences in the area of postoperative fibrovascular tissue between the two groups(P=0.082).The success rate in the two groups was *** difference in densitometry between the ATs and ASEDs group was statistically significant(P=0.042)with greater reduction from baseline in the ASEDS ***:Autologous serum eye drops can lead to better visual acuity,more stable results and improved densitometry and should be considered in the postoperative care following amniotic membrane transplantation.

We studied the effect of titanium dioxide(TiO_(2))nanoparticles(NPs)on dielectric behavior of Naþion-conducting salt-complexed polymer nanocomposite system formed from a binary polymer blend of poly(ethylene oxide)(PEO)and polyvinyl pyrrolidone(PVP),with the addition of both sodium metaperiodate(NaIO_(4))at concentration 10 wt.%and TiO_(2) NPs of size10 nm,at concentrations 1,2,3,4 and 5 wt.%.Free standing nanocomposite PEO/PVP/NaIO_(4)/TiO_(2) films(150m)were characterized at room-temperature by analyzing their complex electrical impedance and dielectric spectra in the range 1 Hz–1 *** the concentration of 3 wt.%of TiO_(2) NPs,both ion conductivity and dielectric permittivity of the PEO/PVP/NaIO_(4)/TiO_(2) ion-conducting dielectrics reach an enhancement by more than one order of magnitude as compared to nanoadditive-free case.

Decentralized adaptive synchronization of an uncertain complex delayed dynamical network

In this paper, we investigate the locally and globally adaptive synchronization problem for an uncertain complex dynamical network with time-varying coupling delays based on the decentralized control. The coupling terms here are bounded by high-order polynomials with known gains that are ubiquitous in a large class of complex dynamical networks. We generalize the usual technology of searching for an appropriate coordinates transformation to change the network dynamics into a series of decoupled lower-dimensional systems. Several adaptive synchronization criteria are derived by constructing the Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional and Barbalat lemma, and the proposed criteria are simple in form and convenient for the practical engineering design. Numerical simulations illustrated by a nearest-neighbor coupling network verify the effectiveness of the proposed synchronization scheme.

This paper focuses on the H_∞ model reference tracking control for a switched linear parameter-varying(LPV)model representing an aero-engine. The switched LPV aeroengine model is built based on a family of linearized *** parameter-dependent Lyapunov functions technique is used to design a tracking control law for the desirable H_∞ tracking performance. A control synthesis condition is formulated in terms of the solvability of a matrix optimization *** result on the aero-engine model shows the feasibility and validity of the switching tracking control scheme.

Correction of source-rock permeability measurements owing to slip flow and Knudsen diffusion: a method and its evaluation

Source-rock permeability is a key parameter that controls the gas production rate from unconventional reservoirs. Measured source-rock permeability in the laboratory, however, is not an intrinsic property of a rock sample, but depends on pore pressure and temperature as a result of the relative importance of slip flow and diffusion in gas flow in lowpermeability media. To estimate the intrinsic permeability which is required to determine effective permeability values for the reservoir conditions, this study presents a simple approach to correct the laboratory permeability measurements based on the theory of gas flow in a micro/nano-tube that includes effects of viscous flow, slip flow and Knudsen diffusion under different pore pressure and temperature conditions. The approach has been verified using published shale laboratory *** ＇＇corrected＇＇（or intrinsic） permeability is considerably smaller than the measured permeability. A larger measured permeability generally corresponds to a smaller relative difference between measured and corrected permeability values. A plot based on our approach is presented to describe the relationships between measured and corrected permeability for typical Gas Research Institute permeability test conditions. The developed approach also allows estimating the effective permeability in reservoir conditions from a laboratory permeability measurement.

Landscape alteration affects the demography of an endangered avian predator by reducing the habitat quality

Habitat transformation is identified as major threat to biodiversity loss globally,affecting threatened *** in land use can alter the abundance and distribution of birds of prey by affecting habitat availability and *** this study,we used multivariate analyses to investigate the effect of habitat alteration on the demography of a declining Eastern Imperial Eagle(Aqufla heliaca),making assumptions for future population *** used the Generalized Linear Mixed Models with Poisson distribution and Log link function,searching a relationship between the demographic parameters and the landscape structure and possible effects of *** our study area,habitat change affected dramatically permanent grasslands,shrinking their *** we expected,the share of grasslands in eagles’territories significantly affected occupancy rate,but not productivity and breeding *** found that occupancy rate decreased significantly,while productivity and breeding frequency showed no *** the effect of habitat alteration on Eastern Imperial Eagle demography,we found out that territory quality was a more powerful factor driving the response of a top predator to the alteration of favorite foraging *** the habitat quality in source territories had a significant positive effect on eagle *** found that simple rules to predict adverse agricultural impact on territory abandonment or breeding productivity of a top predator were not *** results could be used for planning conservation of other large territorial raptors,facing the same type of threat.
