The rapid rate of deforestation in Cote d’Ivoire has led to loss of plant species diversity and also threatens some commercial tree species with *** reforestation and aff orestation has been ***,for some species,the numbers of surviving transplants has ***,it is necessary to develop properly adapted and resilient genotypes that can eff ectively support the programs of forest *** this context we evaluated the eff ects of the provenances of seeds and of various treatments on the germination rates and on plant growth of four commercial trees species(Pycnanthus angolensis,Terminalia superba,Mansonia altissima and Pterygota macrocarpa).We analyzed these parameters for seeds of three provenances(Daloa,Akoupéand Daoukro)of four species and for thirty plants aged 6 months per *** to begin germination and time to reach maximum germination were similar among species,and were not infl uenced by either treatment or *** seeds and those soaked for 24 and 48 h in water at room temperature yielded the highest germination rates,irrespective of species or *** one exception was ***,for which no germination was *** species,some provenances produced higher germination percentages than did *** clear relationship was computed between the germination rate and the morphometric characteristics of the seeds which varied signifi cantly between *** growth and morphological variability also depended greatly on *** factors might be implicated,therefore provenance trials should be undertaken and ***,molecular analysis should be undertaken to confi rm the implications of genetic factors and allow for genetic selection.

为了解根际激发效应(RPE)的研究进展和趋势,以Web of Science核心合集数据库中216篇RPE的研究论文为数据源,通过CiteSpace、VOS viewer对发文数量、平均/总被引频次及国家、机构、作者等进行了分析。结果表明:RPE研究大致可分为三个阶段:初始期(1984~1995年)、稳定发展期(1996~2014年)和快速增长期(2015~2022年)。美国总发文第一且中介中心性最高,国际影响力最大;中国在2018年后年均发文攀升至第一,在国际影响力方面次于德国,排在第三位。国际上主要以Cheng W、Kuzyakov Y为代表的核心作者群;就研究机构而言,中国科学院发文数量最多。研究热点主要集中在RPE的量化方法、影响因素及调控机制,且大多是采用植物幼苗和在室内盆栽条件下完成的。因此,亟需将室内研究拓展至野外原位条件,综合考虑全球气候变化的影响,改进CO_(2)同位素示踪技术和捕获方法,加强成年树种RPE的种间差异变幅研究,优化Earth-System模型参数,进而准确估算陆地生态系统碳循环对气候变化的响应。

Impacts of Field Harvesting and Conservation Practices on the Physical Quality of Yam “Kponan” (Dioscorea cayenensis-rotundata) of Côte D’Ivoire

Yam “Kponan” (Dioscorea cayenensis-rotundata) is a popular staple food in Côte d’Ivoire. However, its rapid decay during conservation prevents regular supply of markets. The objective of this study was therefore to assess the impact of field cultivation and conservation practices on some physical quality parameters of “Kponan”. To this end, “Kponan” yam from three production areas (Bondoukou, Bouna, Kouassi-Kouassikro) was cultivated in each area. At maturity, physical parameters of yams at harvest and after 3 months of storage in field were analyzed. The results showed that injury was the most significant deterioration in yam harvest. The rate of injured yams was highest for hoe-harvested in Kouassi-Kouassikro area (16.67% - 22.22%) regardless of the origin of the cuttings. The main damage observed after the 3 months of storage was rots (22.86% - 60.00%) and weight loss (8.57% - 42.86%). However, yams stored in pits in Bouna zone had less damage (40% - 48.87%) than those stored under straw huts in Bondoukou locality (100%) and at shade under a tree in Kouassi-Kouassikro area (100%). In conclusion, the physical quality of “Kponan” in field is most affected by abusive use of herbicides during weeding and clearing, hoe harvesting and storage in the shade under a tree.

Renal Risk among Diabetic Patients in Togo

Background: Diabetic patients have risk of kidney disease. The aim of this study was to assess the level of renal risk in our study population and to identify the associated predictive factors. Methods: It was a descriptive and analytical cross-sectional study carried out over 5 years (January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2020). All patients were included regardless of the duration of diabetes and having achieved at least one serum creatinine and at least two (2) proteinuria in the 24 hours over a period of at least three months. The level of renal risk was assessed using the KDIGO 2012 classification. Results: A total of 320 patient medical files were retained. The sex ratio M/F was 1.2. The average age was 57.2 ± 11.8 years. Hypertension was the most common comorbidity (84.4%). Diabetic nephropathy was found in 177 patients, a frequency of 42.8%. The very significant renal risk was found in 174 patients (54.4%). In multivariate logistic regression, the risk factors significantly associated with renal risk were: Male sex (OR = 2.50;95% CI = 1.29 - 4.84, p-value = 0.006);microangiopathy (OR = 5.54;95% CI = 1.82 - 16.85 p = 0.002) and beta-blockers (OR = 5.64;95% CI = 1.04 - 30.53 p = 0.004). The Oral Antidiabetes (OR = 0.23;95% CI = 0.10 - 0.55, p = 0.001), the blockers of Renin-Angiotensin system (OR = 0.58;95% CI = 0.41 - 0.90, p = 0.040) and the average socioeconomic level (OR = 0.50;95% CI = 0.25 - 0.98, p = 0.044) were rather the protective factors.

A Panorama of the Urological Diseases at the Former Military Teaching Hospital of Cotonou

Background: Urological care has been advancing quickly over the last ten years in Benin. In order to conveniently support that trend towards better urological care standards, decision-makers need sound data on urological diseases in the country. Objective: To determine the prevalence of urological diseases in the former Military Teaching Hospital of Cotonou. Patients and Method: We retrospectively collected the urological diseases that the institution had managed from January 2012 to December 2020. We used Excel© 2010 and SPSS© to analyze the collected data. Results: 4244 patients, i.e. 3717 males (87.58%) and 527 females (12.42%) were managed during the study period. The main diseases diagnosed were benign prostatic hyperplasia (32.61%, n = 1384), erectile dysfunction (10.44%, n = 443), chronic prostatitis (5.94%, n = 252), prostate cancer (4.03%, n = 171), and ejaculatory disorders (3.44%, n = 146). In patients ≤ 15 years, predominant diseases were peritoneal vaginal canal (15.9%, n = 43), circumcision (15.6%, n = 42), testicular dystopia (10.7%, n = 29), hydrocele (7.8%, n = 21), and hypospadias (5.6%, n = 15). Wilms tumor (1.9%, n = 5) was the first cancer, testicular (0.4%, n = 1) and para-testicular (0.4%, n = 1) tumors were the next. In patients > 15 and ≤40 years, the main diseases were infertility (14.1%, n = 189), chronic prostatitis (12.9%, n = 173), erectile dysfunction (10.1%, n = 135), ejaculatory disorders (6.2%, n = 83), genital infections (6.2%, n = 83) and urinary stone (4.9%, n = 66). The first cancer was kidney cancer (0.97%, n = 13) followed by bladder cancer (0.3%, n = 4) and testicular tumor (0.3%, n = 4). In patients >40 years, the most prevalent diseases were BPH (52.0%, n = 1370), erectile dysfunction (11.7%, n = 308), prostate cancer (6.5%, n = 171), inguinal hernia (5.1%, n = 134), and urinary stone (3.9%, n = 102). Prevalence of Comorbidities in the Urological Patients at the Former Military Teaching Hospital of Cotonou

Background: Comorbidities are additive diseases and care burdens in urological patients. Determining the epidemiologic profile of comorbidities in urological patients in our setting may help us to better the management of urological disease. Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of comorbidities in urological patients. Patient and Method: We collected comorbidity, urological disease and demographic data in all urological patients managed at the former Military Teaching Hospital of Cotonou from January 1, 2012, to December 31, 2020. We used the software R 4.2.2 to perform descriptive and bi-varied data analysis. Student’s t test was used to compare means. Results: The prevalence of comorbidities was 14.2%, i.e., 601 comorbidity-affected among 4242 patients. The comorbidities predominantly affected men: the sex ratio was 13:1. The presence of comorbidity was correlated with patients’ age (p < 0.001). The comorbidities observed in the 601 affected patients were hypertension (84.5%), diabetes (26.5%), asthma (2%), and heart failure (1.2%). Hypertension (p = 0.001) and asthma (p = 0.030) were correlated with age. No comorbidity was associated with gender. The comorbidities’ prevalence was highest in patients aged 40 - 80 years who presented urological diseases such as BPH (68.9%), Erectile dysfunction (ED) and ejaculatory disorders, overactive bladder (OAB) and neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction (LUTD), renal cyst (5%), inguinal hernia (4.2%), urinary stones (2.8%), and prostate cancer (2.3%). Conclusion: The comorbidities’ prevalence was 14.2% in the urological patients. The main comorbidities were hypertension (84.5%) and diabetes mellitus (26.5%).

Correlation of PSA Level and ISUP Grade Group with Scintigraphic Bone Metastases Detection in 36 Prostate Cancer Patients

Background: We need population-specific clinical features that can predict bone metastases as an affordable therapeutic decision-making tool in newly diagnosed prostate cancer patients as scintigraphy or positron emission tomography are not available and as no such study had ever been performed in our country. Objective: To determine biologic and pathologic criteria that can predict the scintigraphic detection of bone metastases in our prostate cancer patients. Patients and Method: We analyzed with student’s t test and logistic regression the PSA level, the ISUP grade and the scintigraphic data retrospectively collected in newly diagnosed prostate cancer patients. Results: In ten years, 36 prostate cancer patients were sent to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra (Ghana) for bone scintigraphy (mean age = 63.9 years;55.6%, 19.4% and 25.0% ISUP grade ≤ 2, 3 or ≥4). Among 28 patients who had performed the bone scintigraphy, 6 (21.4%) presented bone metastases, 22 (78.6%) had no bone metastasis. The mean PSA level was 36.7ng/mL in the non-metastatic patients and 97.7 ng/mL in the metastatic patients. The difference in PSA level between the 2 groups was significative (p = 0.041). 63.6% of the non-metastatic cancers versus 16.7% of the metastatic cancers were ISUP grade 2 or less. Inversely, 36.4% of the non-metastatic cancers versus 83.3% of the metastatic cancers were ISUP grade 3 or more. The difference was significative in the ISUP grade 2 or less (p = 0.035), was significative in the ISUP grade group 3 or more (p = 0.035). Metastasis was more likely in prostate cancer patients with PSA equal 30 ng/mL or more and ISUP grade 3 or more (83.3%) than in prostate cancer patients with PSA less than 30 ng/mL and ISUP grade less than 3 (16.7%) [OR = 13.7;CI 95% (1.59;31.0);p = 0.035]. Conclusion: The scintigraphic detection of bone metastases is low in patients with PSA < 30 ng/mL and ISUP grade < 3. This can be helpful in curative therapy decision making for prostate canc

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are strongly associated with agricultural, residential, transportation, industrial and petroleum activities. In this study, the presence of PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) was investigated in sediments of the ivory coastal zone (Toukouzou Hozalem-Assinie). The main objectives of this study were to determine the abundance and to predict the source of PAHs in the sediments. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was used to analyze sixteen priority PAHs. Total PAHs concentrations were from 1.31 to 3992.68 mg/kg in sediment with an average concentration of (307.54 ± 16.10) mg/kg. Among all PAHs, Naphthalene (Nap = 332.72 mg/kg) and Phenanthrene (Phe = 41.75 mg/kg) were found in the highest concentration, whereas Benzo (k) Fluoranthene was found in the least concentration in the range of 0 - 0.85 mg/kg (mean 0.24 mg/kg). Bassam-Modeste Lagune (BML) sampling site was the site with the highest concentration of total PAHs (all 16 PAHs) compared to the others due to their location in a highly populated estuary area that receives commercial, tourism, port, petroleum and heavy industrial activities. Diagnostic ratios were used to determine the sources of PAHs and suggested that the PAH profile in the sediments was dominated by 2 and 3 ring PAHs. The patterns of PAH compounds in sediment indicated that contamination is from mixed sources, with a strong indication of petrogenic contamination potentially from spills of fuel, oil and industrial activities.

The Impact of Body Mass on Male Fertility in a Cohort of 127 Patients

Background: Aromatase and leptin are two adipose tissue cytokines. The former converts androgens into estrogens and stimulates adipogenesis. The latter cannot fully stimulate GnRH release as its hypothalamic receptors are reduced in obese men. Thus, obesity which is associated with an adipose tissue increment can interfere with male fertility. Objective: We aim to study the correlation between the body mass index (BMI) of an individual and the quality of semen he produces. Patients and Method: By means of the software R 4.2.1 we performed a retrospective analysis of the relationship between the BMI and the semen alterations in the patients managed at the former Military Teaching Hospital of Cotonou from October 1, 2017, to September 30, 2022: a bi-varied analysis and Fischer’s exact test (significance threshold 5%, confidence interval 95%) followed by a logistic regression when a non-significant p-value is below 0.20. Results: 127 males managed for infertility (mean age = 36.2 years) were recorded, including 11.1% obese (BMI > 30 kg/m2) and 36.5% overweighted (25 kg/m2 2). The most frequent semen alterations were: oligoasthenospermia (27.8%), asthenospermia (22.2%), oligoasthenoteratospermia (14.3%), azoospermia (13.5%) and asthenoteratospermia (9.5%). Bi-varied analysis showed no correlation between the BMI and the semen alterations (p-value ranged from 0.086 to 0.9) and no difference in semen alterations between patients with BMI below and above 25 kg/m2 (p-value ranged from 0.12 to 0.9). Logistic regression demonstrated that asthenoteratospermia were correlated with BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2 [OR = 2.1, 95% CI (1.50 - 2.70), p = 0.021]. Conclusion: Male obesity and overweight can trigger asthenoteratospermia.

COVID-19 Infection and Acute Kidney Injury: About 43 Cases Report Collected at the Nephrology Department of the Farah Polyclinic in Abidjan

Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is one of the increasingly described complications of coronavirus infection. Objectives: To identify factors associated with death in patients with acute kidney injury (AKI) during Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Abidjan, C?te d’Ivoire. Material and Method: This was a monocentric retrospective analytical study of all patients over 18 years of age with AKI during COVID-19 at the Farah Polyclinic in Abidjan, C?te d’Ivoire. AKI was defined and ranked according to Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) 2012. The data were collected from the medical record and processed using RStudio. Results: Forty-three cases were collected. The average age was 58.5 12 years. The sex ratio (M/F) was 4.4. The main comorbidities were high blood pressure (60.4%) and diabetes (37.2%). AKI was at KDIGO stage 3 in 58%, KDIGO 2 in 21% and KDIGO 1 in 21%. The diagnosis of acute tubular necrosis was retained in 44.2% of patients followed by acute functional kidney injury in 32.6%. Hemodialysis was initiated in 48.8% of cases. The main indication of dialysis was anuria (46.6%). In total, 55.8% of patients died. Factors associated with death were KDIGO stage (p = 0.049), and invasive ventilation (p Conclusion: Mortality is high in patients with AKI during COVID-19 infection.
