Since its invention,holography has been mostly applied at visible wavelengths in a variety of ***,non-destructive testing of manufactured objects was a driver for developing holographic methods and all related ones based on the speckle pattern *** substantial limitation of holographic non-destructive testing is the setup stability requirements directly related to the laser *** observation has driven some works for 15 years:developing holography at wavelengths much longer than visible *** this paper,we will first review researches carried out in the infrared,mostly digital holography at thermal infrared wavelengths around 10 *** will discuss the advantages of using such wavelengths and show different examples of *** nondestructive testing,large wavelengths allow using digital holography in perturbed environments on large objects and measure large deformations,typical of the aerospace *** astonishing applications such as reconstructing scenes through smoke and flames were *** moving further in the spectrum,digital holography with so-called Terahertz waves(up to 3 millimeters wavelength)has also been *** main advantage here is that these waves easily penetrate some ***,one can envisage Terahertz digital holography to reconstruct the amplitude and phase of visually opaque *** review some cases in which Terahertz digital holography has shown potential in biomedical and industrial *** will also address some fundamental bottlenecks that prevent fully benefiting from the advantages of digital holography when increasing the wavelength.

Soil carbon and nitrogen dynamics linked to Piliostigma species in ferugino-tropical soils in the Sudano-Sahelian zone of Burkina Faso, West Africa

In the Sudano-Sahelian zone of Burkina Faso, Piliostigma reticulatum （DC） Hochst and Piliostigma thonningii （Schumach） are precursor species of fallow land colonization and they are used by rural villagers. The present study aimed to assess the contribution of Piliostigma species to soil quality improvement. We quantified organic carbon, total nitrogen, soil microbial biomass, soil basal respiration and metabolic quotient from soil samples taken under and outside Piliostigma canopies. We used one-way ANOVA to test for differences in the above parameters between locations （beneath and outside Piliostigma canopies）. We recorded increased total organic carbon under Piliostigma from 31%–105% and in total nitrogen from 23%–66%. Microbial biomass was 13%–266% higher beneath canopies as compared to outside canopies. Basal respiration was also higher beneath canopies. The chemical elements varied by class of soil texture. Metabolic quotient （qCO2） was significantly correlated to clay （r = 0.80） and silt （r = 0.79） content. Piliostigma stands produced abundant litter due to their leaf biomass. Thus, they contribute to improved total organic carbon and total nitrogen content in the different phytogeographic zones and improve soil fertility.

Pozzolans from the Tombel Plain,Bamileke Plateau,and Noun Plain,3 monogenetic volcanic fields in the central part of the Cameroon Volcanic Line(the Tombel Plain,Bamileke Plateau,and Noun Plain),were explored in order to constrain their petrology and make some predictions on their *** rocks in this study include alkaline and subalkaline basalts,trachybasalts,and *** of these rocks present an overall composition that overlaps with primitive mantle,suggesting rapid ascent of magmas,limited crustal contamination and crystal fractionation of olivine,clinopyroxene,and *** pozzolans present enrichment of LREE relative to HREE and high chondrite normalized ratios of La/Yb and Tb/*** between 7 and 20 and>1.9 respectively,similar to those of Ocean Island *** other nearby volcanoes,partial melting in a dominantly garnet-bearing mantle zone can be *** mineralogy by X-ray diffraction revealed various mineral phases with dominantly plagioclase,augite,olivine,and Fe-Ti *** samples contains important amorphous phase up to 23,51,and 69 wt%in the Tombel Plain,Noun Plain,and Bamileke Plateau,*** elevated amount of amorphous phases together with the sum of SiO2,Al2O3 and total Fe2O3(SAI=68.50-83.50>70 wt%)according to ASTM C618 standard and the sum of CaO,FeO,and MgO(CIM=14.5-30.52 wt%and 23.58-31.08 wt%)suggest interesting pozzolanicity character for the studied pozzolans.

Liver transplantation has been the treatment of choice for end-stage liver disease since *** has emerged as a major long-term cause of death for liver transplant *** retrospective studies that have explored standardized incidence ratio have reported increased rates of solid organ cancers postliver transplantation;some have also studied risk *** transplantation results in a two to five-fold mean increase in the rate of solid organ *** of head and neck,lung,esophageal,cervical cancers and Kaposi’s sarcoma is high,but risk of colorectal cancer is not clearly *** appears to be no excess risk of developing breast or prostate *** risk factors such as viral infection and tobacco consumption,and personal risk factors such as obesity play a key role,but recent data also implicate the role of calcineurin inhibitors,whose cumulative and dose-dependent effects on cell metabolism might play a direct role in *** this paper,we review the results of studies assessing the incidence of non-skin solid tumors in order to understand the mechanisms underlying solid cancers in post-liver transplant patients and,ultimately,discuss how to prevent these *** protocol changes,including a calcineurin inhibitor-free regimen,combined with dietary guidelines and smoking cessation,are theoretically the best preventive measures.

Proteomics allows the large-scale study of protein expression either in whole organisms or in purified organelles. In particular, mass spectrometry （MS） analysis of gel-separated proteins produces data not only for protein identification, but for protein structure, location, and processing as well. An in-depth analysis was performed on MS data from etiolated hypocotyl cell wall proteomics ofArabidopsis thaliana. These analyses show that highly homologous members of multigene families can be differentiated. Two lectins presenting 93% amino acid identity were identified using peptide mass fingerprinting. Although the identification of structural proteins such as extensins or hydroxyproline/proline-rich proteins （H/PRPs） is arduous, different types of MS spectra were exploited to identify and characterize an H/PRP. Maturation events in a couple of cell wall proteins （CWPs） were analyzed using site mapping. N-glycosylation of CWPs as well as the hydroxylation or oxidation of amino acids were also explored, adding information to improve our understanding of CWP structure/function relationships. A bioinformatic tool was developed to locate by means of MS the N-terminus of mature secreted proteins and N-glycosylation.

Electrochemical behavior of mesh and plate oxide coated anodes during zinc electrowinning

The catalytic performance of two oxides coated anodes （OCSs） meshes and one OCA plate was investigated in a zinc electrowinning electrolyte at 38 ℃. Their electrochemical behaviors were compared with that of a conventional Pb-0.7%Ag alloy anode. Electrochemical measurements such as cyclic voltammetric, galvanostatic, potentiodynamic, open-circuit potential （OCP） and in situ electrochemical noise measurements were considered. After 2 h of OCP test, the linear polarization shows that the corrosion current density of the Ti/（IrO2-Ta2O5） mesh electrode is the lowest （3.37μA/cm^2） among the three OCAs and shows excellent performance. Additionally, after 24 h of galvanostatic polarization at 50 mA/cm^2and 38 ℃, the Ti/MnO2mesh anode has the highest potential （1.799 V）, followed by the Ti/（IrO2-Ta2O5） plate （1.775 V） and Ti/（IrO2-Ta2O5） mesh （1.705 V） anodes. After 24 h of galvanostatic polarization followed by 16 h of decay, the linear polarization method confirms the sequence obtained after 2 h of OCP test, and the Ti/（IrO2-Ta2O5） mesh attains the lowest corrosion current density. The Ti/（IrO2-Ta2O5） mesh anode also shows better performance after 24 h of galvanostatic polarization with the overpotential lower than that of the conventional Pb-Ag anode by about 245 mV.

Do aphids actively search for ant partners？

The aphid-ant mutnalistic relationships are not necessarily obligate for neither partners but evidence is that such interactions provide them strong advantages in terms of global fitness. While it is largely assumed that ants actively search for their mutualistic partners namely using volatile cues; whether winged aphids （i.e., aphids＇ most mobile form） are able to select ant-frequented areas had not been investigated so far. Ant-frequented sites would indeed offer several advantages for these aphids including a lower predation pressure through ant presence and enhanced chances of establishing mutuaslistic interactions with neighbor ant colonies. In the field, aphid colonies are often observed in higher densities around ant nests, which is probably linked to a better survival ensured by ants＇ services. Nevertheless, this could also result from a preferential establishment of winged aphids in ant-frequented areas. We tested this last hypothesis through different ethological assays and show that the facultative myrmecophilous black bean aphid, Aphisfabae L., does not orientate its search for a host plant preferentially toward ant-frequented plants. However, our results suggest that ants reduce the number of winged aphids leaving the newly colonized plant. Thus, ants involved in facultative myrmecophilous interactions with aphids appear to contribute to structure aphid populations in the field by ensuring a better establishment and survival of newly established colonies rather than by inducing a deliberate plant selection by aphid partners based on the proximity of ant colonies.

Liver transplantation for alcoholic liver disease: Lessons learned and unresolved issues

The use of liver transplantation(LT) as a treatment for alcoholic liver disease(ALD) has been highly controversial since the beginning. The ever increasing shortage of organs has accentuated the low priority given to patients suffering from ALD, which is considered a "self-inflicted" condition. However, by improving the long-term survival rates, making them similar to those from other indications, and recognizing that alcoholism is a primary disease, ALD has become one of the most common indications for LT in Europe and North America, a situation thought unfathomable thirty years ago. Unfortunately, there are still many issues with the use of this procedure for ALD. There are significant relapse rates, and the consequences of excessive drinking after LT range from asymptomatic biochemical and histological abnormalities to graft failure and death. A minimum three-month period of sobriety is required for an improvement in liver function, thus making LT unnecessary, and to demonstrate the patient's commitment to the project, even though a longer abstinence period does not guarantee lower relapse rates after LT. Recent data have shown that LT is also effective for severe alcoholic hepatitis when the patient is unresponsive to corticosteroids therapy, with low relapse rates in highly selected patients, although these results must be confirmed before LT becomes a standard procedure in this setting. Finally, LT for ALD is accompanied by an increased risk of de novo solid organ cancer, skin cancer, and lymphoproliferative disorders, which has a large impact on the survival rates.

Mineralogy and geochemistry of sands of the lower course of the Sanaga River, Cameroon: implications for weathering,provenance, and tectonic setting

This study focuses on the mineralogy and bulk chemical composition of 19 sediment samples,collected from the Sanaga River bed,between Nanga-Eboko and the Atlantic Ocean in Cameroon,to infer provenance,weathering,and tectonic *** textural analysis revealed that these sediments are mainly coarse-grained sands.X-ray diffraction and heavy mineral analyses show that these sands are made of quartz,microcline,plagioclase,muscovite,ilmenite,anatase,magnetite,opaques,and *** Index of Chemical Variability values(1.07–2.68)indicates that the sands are *** Chemical Index of Alteration(53–66%),Plagioclase Index of Alteration(PIA;57–75%),and Mafic Index of Alteration(54–67%)values revealed a moderate intensity of weathering for these *** to the compositional maturity diagram,the sands are mainly *** studied sands show enrichment in light rare earth elements relative to heavy rare earth elements and a negative anomaly in Eu(Eu/Eu*=0.32–0.83).These sands were derived from felsic metamorphic rocks dated Meso to Neoproterozoic from the Pan-African(700–1000 Ma)domain of south ***/U ratios(mean=5.40;n=19)reveal that these sands originating from felsic source rocks and are low to moderately *** the tectonic discrimination diagrams,all the samples are plotted in the rift and passive margin domains,which is consistent with the tectonic history of Pan African in southern Cameroon.
