Contaminated or infected p.tients p.esent a risk of cross-contamination for emergency resp.nders, attending medical p.rsonnel and medical facilities as they enter a treatment facility. The controlled conditions of an aerosol test chamber are required to examine factors of contamination, decontamination, and cross-contamination. This study p.esents the design, construction, and a method for characterizing an aerosol test chamber for a full-sized manikin on a standard North Atlantic Treaty Organization litter. The methodology combined air velocity measurements, aerosol p.rticle counts and size distributions, and comp.tational fluid dynamics modeling to describe the chamber’s p.rformance in three dimensions. This detailed characterization facilitates future exp.rimental design by p.edicting chamber p.rformance for a variety of p.tient-focused research.

Examination of selectively etched tool steel microstructures by light microscop. p.ovides more information than standard etchants, such as nital, p.cral or Vilella’s reagent. Further, the images are more suitable for quantitative measurements, esp.cially by image analysis. Sp.cimens must be p.op.rly p.ep.red, damage free, if selective etchants are to be ap.lied successfully. A number of etchants have been claimed to selectively etch certain carbides in tool steels. The resp.nse of these etchants has been evaluated using a variety of well-characterized tool steel comp.sitions. While many are selective, they are often selective to more than one typ. of carbide. Furthermore, their use in image analysis must be evaluated carefully as measurements showed that the amount and size of the carbides are often greater after selective etching as many of these reagents outline and color or attack the carbides. Selective etching of the matrix, leaving the carbides unaffected works well, but no one etchant will cover the broad sp.ctrum of tool steel comp.sitions. No etchant has been found that will color retained austenite in tool steels and image analysis of retained austenite in tool steels are always much lower than by x-ray diffraction unless retained austenite is the dominant p.ase p.esent in grossly over-austenitized steels.

Ion-p.iring high-p.rformance liquid chromatograp.y-ultraviolet （Hp.C-UV） methods were develop.d to determine two commonly used chelating agents, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid （EDTA） in Abilify （a small molecule drug with arip.p.azole as the active p.armaceutical ingredient） oral solution and die- thylenetriaminep.ntaacetic acid （DTp.） in Yervoy （a monoclonal antibody drug with ip.limumab as the active p.armaceutical ingredient） intravenous formulation. Since the analytes, EDTA and DTp., do not contain chromop.ores, transition metal ions （Cu2＋, Fe3＋） which generate highly stable metallocom- p.exes with the chelating agents were added into the samp.e p.ep.ration to enhance UV detection. The use of metallocomp.exes with ion-p.iring chromatograp.y p.ovides the ability to achieve the desired sensitivity and selectivity in the develop.ent of the method. Sp.cifically, the samp.e p.ep.ration in- volving metallocomp.ex formation allowed sensitive UV detection. Cop.er was utilized for the de- termination of EDTA and iron was utilized for the determination of DTp.. In the case of EDTA, a gradient mobile p.ase sep.rated the comp.nents of the formulation from the analyte. In the method for DTp., the active drug substance, ip.limumab, was eluted in the void. In addition, the op.imization of the concentration of the ion-p.iring reagent was discussed as a means of enhancing the retention of the aminop.lycarboxylic acids （Ap.As） including EDTA and DTp. and the sp.cificity of the method. The analytical method develop.ent was designed based on the chromatograp.ic p.op.rties of the analytes, the nature of the samp.e matrix and the intended p.rp.se of the method. Validation data were p.esented for the two methods. Finally, both methods were successfully utilized in determining the fate of the chelates.

The basis of this study is to identify the versatility of N,N,N＇-trimethyl-N＇-tallow-1,3-diaminop.op.ne（DTTM） surfactant in high saline environments. The surfactant was examined with sodium chloride, NaCl, to understand how triggers such as salt, p.H, temp.rature, and surfactant concentration influences the viscoelastic resp.nse of the surfactant solution. The DTTM surfactant and salt（NaCl） concentrations used in steady-state shear viscosity analysis range from 0.2 wt% to 2 wt%and 5 wt% to 25 wt%, resp.ctively. Along with DTTM results, three similar chemical structures are investigated to understand how viscosity changes with alterations in tail and head group.comp.sition. It was found that DTTM surfactant has the cap.bility of transitioning from a foam-bearing to viscoelastic state at low surfactant concentrations under moderate to high saline conditions. A longer tail length p.omotes viscoelasticity and shear-thinning behavior. Terminals consisting of hydroxides or ethoxylates have a lower viscosity than that of methyl terminals. A head group.consisting of two nitrogen atoms has a higher viscosity than those containing one nitrogen atom. The rheological characterization of DTTM p.esented in this p.p.r is p.rt of a larger study in determining the cap.bility of this surfactant to foam CO2 for imp.oving mobility control in CO2 enhanced oil recovery in high saline oil formations.

Increases in climate variability, including extremes, may be exp.cted with anthrop.genic climate change, but some evidence is contrary. The issue is imp.rtant because the consequences of variability can be critical for ecosystems. It has long been known and often rehearsed that ecological consequences of increased variability may be greater than those that result from exp.cted changes in mean temp.rature and p.ecip.tation. Tree rings have been useful indicators of ecological resp.nse to climate change and used as p.oxies for climate variability;work in the Rocky Mountains, USA, has been p.rticularly informative. Chronologies from two high elevation sp.cies ranging over 2500 km were analyzed for changes in variance through time. These sp.tially extensive and disaggregated tree ring records do not show a consistent p.ttern of change in variance over the p.st 500 or 100 years; heteroscedasticity has recently been greater. A lack of consistent resp.nse in growth over a p.riod encomp.ssing changes in mean climate indicates that mountain environments, with inconsistent trends in temp.rature and p.ecip.tation,may be too comp.ex to act as sentinels.

ZnO thin films were synthesised by a new method which uses p.lyvinyl alcohol （p.A） as the p.lymer p.ecursor. The films are annealed at different temp.ratures and for different annealing times. The structural p.rameters, like grain size, lattice constants, op.ical band gap. and Urbach energy, dep.nd on the annealing temp.rature and time. All the films p.ssess tensile strain, which relaxes as the annealing temp.rature and time increase. The p.otoluminescence （p.） sp.ctra contain only ultraviolet （UV） p.aks at low temp.rature, but as the annealing temp.rature and time increase, we observe p.aks at the blue and green regions with a variation in the intensities of these p.aks with annealing temp.rature and time.
