BACKGROUND Chronic hepatitis C virus(HCV)has been associated with hepatic and extrahe-patic *** studies have shown an association between colorectal adenomas and HCV *** To study the prevalence of colorectal adenomas in patients with HCV compared to the general population and to evaluate if it is an independent risk factor for colorectal *** Patients were divided into HCV and non-HCV based on their HCV RNA *** with alcoholic liver disease,hepatitis B infection,and inflammatory bowel disease were *** variables were analyzed using the mann-Whitney U test,and categorical variables usingχ^(2) with Pmatched in both groups by propensity score matching,followed by multivariate regression *** Of the 415 patients screened,109 HCV patients and 97 non-HCV patients with colonoscopy results were included in the *** patients were older,had a smoking history,had less frequent aspirin use,and had a lower body mass index(BmI)(Pmber of patients with adenomas(adenoma detection rate of 53.2%vs 34%.P=0.006).We performed a propensity-matched multivariate analysis where HCV infection was significantly associated with colorectal adenoma(OR:2.070,P=0.019).CONCLUSION Our study shows a significantly higher rate of adenomas in HCV patients compared to the general *** studies would help determine if the increase in adenoma detection lowers the risk for colorectal cancer.

Characterisation of the Bacteria and Archaea Community Associated with Wild Oysters, At Three Possible Restoration Sites in the North Sea

With 85% of the global oyster reefs destroyed, there is an urgent need for large scale restoration to benefit from the ecosystem services provided by biogenic oyster reefs and their associated biodiversity, including microorganisms that drive marine biogeochemical cycles. This experiment established a baseline for the monitoring of the bacterial and archaeal community associated with wild oysters, using samples from their immediate environment of the Voordelta, with cohabiting Crassostrea gigas and Ostrea edulis, Duikplaats with only C. gigas attached to rocks, and the Dansk Skaldyrcentre, with no onsite oysters. The microbial profiling was carried out through DNA analysis of samples collected from the surfaces of oyster shells and their substrate, the sediment and seawater. Following 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing and bioinformatics, alpha indices implied high species abundance and diversity in sediment but low abundance in seawater. As expected, Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes and Thaumarchaeota dominated the top 20 OTUs. In the Voordelta, OTUs related to Colwellia, Shewanella and Psychrobium differentiated the oysters collected from a reef with those attached to rocks. Duikplaats were distinct for sulfur-oxidizers Sulfurimonas and sulfate-reducers from the Sva 0081 sediment group. Archaea were found mainly in sediments and the oyster associated microbiome, with greater abundance at the reef site, consisting mostly of Thaumarchaeota from the family Nitrosopumilaceae. The oyster free site displayed archaea in sediments only, and algal bloom indicator microorganisms from the Rhodobacteraceae, Flavobacteriaceae family and genus [Polaribacter] huanghezhanensis, in addition to the ascidian symbiotic partner, Synechococcus. This study suggests site specific microbiome shifts, influenced by the presence of oysters and the type of substrate.

Background:Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)is associated with impaired renal function,and both diseases often occur alongside other metabolic ***,the prevalence and risk factors for impaired renal function in patients with NAFLD remain *** objective of this study was to identify the prevalence and risk factors for renal impairment in NAFLD ***:All adults aged 18-70 years with ultrasound-diagnosed NAFLD and transient elastography examination from eight Asian centers were enrolled in this prospective *** fibrosis and cirrhosis were assessed by FibroScan-aspartate aminotransferase(FAST),Agile 3+and Agile 4 *** renal function and chronic kidney disease(CKD)were defined by an estimated glomerular filtration rate(eGFR)with value ofmL/min/1.73 m^(2) andmL/min/1.73 m^(2),respectively,as estimated by the CKD-Epidemiology Collaboration(CKD-EPI)***:Among 529 included NAFLD patients,the prevalence rates of impaired renal function and CKD were 37.4%and 4.9%,*** multivariate analysis,a moderate-high risk of advanced liver fibrosis and cirrhosis according to Agile 3+and Agile 4 scores were independent risk factors for CKD(Pmore,increased fasting plasma glucose(FPG)and blood pressure were significantly associated with impaired renal function after controlling for the other components of metabolic syndrome(Pmpared with patients with normoglycemia,those with prediabetes[FPG≥5.6 mmol/L or hemoglobin A1c(HbA1c)≥5.7%]were more likely to have impaired renal function(Pmic control in the prediabetic stage might have a potential renoprotective role in these patients.

Parallelization of an Implicit Algorithm for multi-Dimensional Particle-in-Cell Simulations

A size-gradient hypothesis for alpine treeline ecotones

Research on the stress gradient hypothesis recognizes that positive(i.e. facilitative) and negative(i.e. competitive) plant interactions change in intensity and effect relative to abiotic stress experienced on a gradient. motivated by observations of alpine treeline ecotones, we suggest that this switch in interaction could operate along a gradient of relative size of individual plants. We propose that as neighbors increase in size relative to a focal plant they improve the environment for that plant up to a critical point. After this critical point is surpassed, however, increasing relative size of neighbors will degrade the environment such that the net interaction intensity becomes negative. We developed a conceptual(not site or species specific) individual based model to simulate a single species with recruitment, growth, and mortality dependent on the environment mediated by the relative size of neighbors. Growth and size form a feedback. Simulation results show that the size gradient model produces metrics similar to that of a stress gradient model. Visualizations reveal that the size gradient model produces spatial patterns that are similar to the complex ones observed at alpine treelines. Size-mediated interaction could be a mechanism of the stress gradient hypothesis or it could operate independent of abiotic stress.

Carcinoembryonic Antigen as a Prognostic Factor in Colorectal Cancer with Liver metastases

Aim: The objective of this study was to investigate the prognostic value of serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) level in colorectal cancer patients with liver metastases. The serum CEA level was recorded at the point of metastasis diagnosis, differing from the majority of literature looking at preoperative metastasectomy CEA level. methods: From January 2010 to December 2014, 138 patients with a diagnosis of colorectal cancer and liver metastases were included in the study—population from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Patients with both resectable and unresectable liver metastases were followed up over a 4-year period. Kaplan meier survival analysis was used to produce survival curves that were compared by log-rank test. Results: The overall survival for all patients studied with a CEA ml was significantly longer compared to patients with CEA ≥ 100 ng/mL (p metastases, a low CEA level (mL) was also associated with the increased overall survival (p = 0.036). Conclusions: In our patient cohort, this study indicated that a low CEA level (mL) measured at metastasis diagnosis was a good prognostic indicator for improving survival in patients with colorectal liver metastases. These findings highlight the importance of measuring serum CEA levels in this group of patients at the time of liver metastasis diagnosis.
