Changes in Streamflow Regime Due to Anthropogenic Regulations in the Humid Tropical Western Ghats, Kerala State, India

Regulation of streamflow by a reservoir creates a flow regime much different from the preimpoundment period flow regime. Hydro-Electric Projects(HEPs) commissioned in the Western Ghat regions of the Kerala State, India during the last four decades caused considerable changes in the flow regimes of the rivers of the Kerala State in southwest India. In this paper, the Indicators of Hydrologic Alteration(IHA) approach proposed by Richter et al.(1996) is used to analyze flow regime changes in the Periyar and Muvattupuzha Rivers, due to the construction of the Idukki(1976), Idamalayar(1987) and Lower Periyar(1997) HEPs in the high ranges of the Western Ghats. Normal rainfall years(annual rainfall values within mean ± 0.75 standard deviation limits) are only considered in the analysis to focus on hydrologic alterations due to human activities. The mean hydrologic alteration in the Periyar River(deviation from the pre-development hydrologic indicator values) after commissioning of three HEPs is 35%. Inter-basin water transfer after power generation from the Idukki HEP resulted in a higher discharge in the adjacent Muvattupuzha River, leading to considerable changes in the hydroenvironment(mean hydrologic alterations varying between 57 to 63%). IHA parameters showing hydrologic alterations above the 67 th Percentile werefurther analyzed. For each of the pre-construction hydrologic parameters ± 1 standard deviation from the mean is set as the upper and lower management target limits. The values of each IHA parameter beyond these targets are considered as nonattainment. Considerable hydrologic alterations are observed, especially for low flows in both basins. Inter-basin transfer induced larger changes in flow parameters compared to intra-basin regulations. The study shows that under a proper water release and diversion scheme, the non-attainment of IHA parameters(values fall beyond the target limits) can be reduced. Territorial Resilience Through Visibility Analysis for Immediate Detection of Wildfires Integrating Fire Susceptibility,Geographical Features,and Optimization Methods

Climate change effects tend to reinforce the frequency and severity of wildfires worldwide,and early detection of wildfire events is considered of crucial *** primary aim of this study was the spatial optimization of fire resources(that is,watchtowers)considering the interplay of geographical features(that is,simulated burn probability to delimit fire vulnerability;topography effects;and accessibility to candidate watchtower locations)and geo-optimization techniques(exact programming methods)to find both an effective and financially feasible solution in terms of visibility coverage in Chalkidiki Prefecture of northern *** integration of all geographical features through the Analytical Hierarchy Process indicated the most appropriate territory for the installment of *** analysis guaranteed the independence and proximity of location options(applying spatial systematic sampling to avoid first order redundancy)across the *** conjunction of the above processes yielded 654 candidate watchtower positions in 151,890 ha of *** algorithm was designed to maximize the joint visible area and simultaneously minimize the number of candidate locations and overlapping effects(avoiding second order redundancy).The results indicate four differentiated location options in the study area:(1)75locations can cover 90%of the forests(maximum visible area);(2)47 locations can cover 85%of the forests;(3)31locations can cover 80.2%of the forests;and(4)16 locations can cover 70.6%of the *** last option is an e fficient solution because it covers about 71%of the forests with just half the number of watchtowers that would be required for the third option with only about 10%additional forest ***,the final choice of any location scheme is subject to agency priorities and their respective financial flexibility.

Exploring injury severity of children and adolescents involved in traffic crashes in Greece

For the purpose of exploring the factors affecting injury severity of children and adolescents involved in traffic crashes in Greece,disaggregate crash data including 13,431 involving children and adolescents from all regions of Greece for the period 2006–2015 were *** order to identify factors affecting injury severity and account for potential unobserved heterogeneity,a series of mixed logit models were *** explore and address potential temporal instability of crash-related risk factors,the likelihood ratio test was *** indicated that night crashes,crashes outside urban areas as well as crashes involving bicycles or powered-two-wheelers are associated with higher injury severity of children and ***,crashes involving pedestrians are associated with lower injury severity than head-on collisions and run-off-road collisions with fixed *** and sideswipe crashes also result in lower injury *** likelihood ratio test indicated that crash-related factors are instable when comparing the models utilizing data before and after 2010 *** study contributes to the current knowledge in the field,as to the best of our knowledge this is the first study that addresses unobserved heterogeneity when analyzing child and adolescent injury ***,the findings of this study provide useful insights and could assist in unveiling crash risk factors and prioritize programs and measures to promote road safety of children and adolescents.

Evaluation of alum-based water treatment residuals used to adsorb reactive phosphorus

Excess reactive phosphorus(PO4)in waterways can lead to eutrophication.A low-cost approach to reducing PO4 levels in surface water was evaluated using the alum-based water treatment residual(Al-WTR)or Al-WTR augmented with powdered activated carbon(PAC-WTR).Batch adsorption-desorption and continuous flow column experiments were performed to assess the specific adsorption capacities under various concentration and flow *** Al-WTR and PAC-WTR exhibited the ability to adsorb *** overall,cumulative sorbed amount after a 28-d desorption step for Al-WTR was 33.93 mg/kg,significantly greater than the PAC-WTR value of 24.95 mg/kg(p<0.05).The continuous flow column experiments showed a theoretical PO4 uptake of 9.00 mg/g for Al-WTR and 7.14 mg/g for PAC-WTR over 720 *** surface water was used,the Al-WTR and PAC-WTR columns removed 67.4%and 62.1%of the PO4,*** results indicated that Al-WTR was more effective for in-field evaluation.

Highly pathogenic influenza A virus H5N1 has spread out worldwide and raised the public concerns. This increased the output of influenza virus sequence data as well as the research publication and other reports. In order to fight against H5N1 avian flu in a comprehensive way, we designed and started to set up the Website for Avian Flu Information (http://***) from 2004. Other than the influenza virus database available, the website is aiming to integrate diversified information for both researchers and the public. From 2004 to 2009, we collected information from all aspects, i.e. reports of outbreaks, scientific publications and editorials, policies for prevention, medicines and vaccines, clinic and diagnosis. Except for publications, all information is in Chinese. Till April 15, 2009, the cumulative news entries had been over 2000 and research papers were approaching 5000. By using the curated data from Influenza Virus Resource, we have set up an influenza virus sequence database and a bioinformatic platform, providing the basic functions for the sequence analysis of influenza virus. We will focus on the collection of experimental data and results as well as the integration of the data from the geological information system and avian influenza epidemiology.

Analysis of equilibrium, kinetic, and thermodynamic parameters for biosorption of fluoride from water onto coconut(Cocos nucifera Linn.)root developed adsorbent

Drinking water with higher fluoride levels results in serious irremediable health problems that have attained a startle all over the *** focused towards deflouridation through the application of biosorbents prepared from various plants are finding greater scope and *** research is done on Cocos nucifera Linn.(coconut tree) one of the very commonly available plants throughout Kerala and around the *** adsorbent developed from the root portion of *** *** used in the present *** study revealed that the fluoride uptake capacity is quite significant and linearly increases with initial adsorbate *** adsorption data is analyzed for Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin–Radushkevich isotherm models at varying initial adsorbate concentrations(2–25 mg·L^(-1)).It is found that the adsorption of fluoride onto *** *** adsorbent follows Langmuir *** isotherm constants "a" and "b" obtained are 2.037 mg·g^(-1) and 0.823 L·mg^(-1) at an adsorbent dose of 8 g·L^(-1) and temperature(26 ± 1) ℃.The mean free sorption energy, E obtained, is 9.13 kJ ·mol^(-1) which points out that the adsorption of fluoride onto *** *** adsorbent is by chemisorption *** kinetic study also supports chemisorption with adsorption data fitting well with a pseudo-second-order kinetic model with an estimated rate constant K_2 of 0.2935 g·mg^(-1) min at an equilibrium contact time of 90 *** thermodynamic study indicated the spontaneous and endothermic nature(ΔH =12.728 kJ·mol^(-1)) of fluoride adsorption onto the *** *** *** Electron Microscopy(SEM), BET, FTIR, and EDX methods were used to analyze the surface morphology of adsorbent before and after fluoride adsorption *** on deflouridation using *** *** adsorbent application on fluoride contaminated ground water samples from fields showed encouraging results.
