Relational characteristics and dynamics between high-tech firms in the Pearl River Delta and the empowerment for technological innovation by Hong Kong

The perfection of the cross-border regional innovation system of the Pearl River Delta(PRD) and Hong Kong remarkably underpins the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area(GBA) towards an international technological innovation *** paper focuses on the relational characteristics of the usage of technological innovation functions and elements, including labor force, technology, and producer services from Hong Kong by high-technology firms in the PRD, and probes into the influencing factors by integrating the objective perspective on the impact of firm-level socioeconomic attributes and subjective perspective on the open interpretations on the reasons by using or not using technological innovation functions and elements from Hong Kong by various stakeholders in high-technology domains in the PRD. Key research findings are fourfold. First, Hong Kong's technological innovation functions primarily ride on its institutional advantages under the “One country, Two systems” framework to empower high-technology firms in the PRD by expanding their international market, international business operation, and financing, but cross-border investment and entrepreneurship has retrieved to a relatively marginalized position. The degree of supply-demand relations of producer services is the highest, followed by labor force and ***, Hong Kong-invested, large-sized, and long-standing high-technology firms in the PRD are more inclined to use technological innovation elements from Hong Kong, while domestic,small-and-medium-sized, and start-up high-technology firms in the PRD are in turn, gradually unhooked from the supply of technological innovation elements from Hong Kong. Third, Hong Kong enjoys both advantages and disadvantages in supplying labor forces, technologies, and producer services to high-technology firms in the PRD, with advantages in competitiveness,international linkages and visions, and disadvantages in high cost, lack of more profoun

Existing theoretical attempts to understand the dynamics of technological innovation have focused on the influence of regional environment and inter-firm relations. More recently, however, a number of studies have suggested that firm-specific attributes be taken as the key to innovation. This study examines the determinants of technological innovation in china’s IcT firms based on a large-scale questionnaire survey. We reveal that firm-level attributes are of great importance to innovation whereas the influences of region/relation-specific factors are modified by the types of innovation and by firms’ strategies and motivations. The role of regional and relational assets should not be over-emphasized at the expense of firm-level attributes. Research emphasis should be placed on the process of how firm attributes interacted with regional environment and inter-firm relations to shape innovation. The article concludes with a plea to bring ‘the firm’ back to the center and adopt an interactionist approach to understanding technological innovation.

Assessing the Potential of Innovative clay Designs for Enhancing Oyster Reef Restoration

The restoration of European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis) population is critical for biodiversity and ecosystem services recovery. This study evaluates the potential of innovative clay substrates, developed and patented by Oyster Heaven, as cost-effective and degradable alternatives for large-scale oyster reef restoration. Field trials conducted in an oyster aquaculture site and hatchery experiments under controlled conditions assessed the larvae settlement efficiency, microbial biofilm composition, and environmental influences. Results showed significantly lower larvae recruitment on clay prototypes and spat collectors used as control, in wild conditions, with environmental factors such as temperature and hypoxia playing a key role. In the hatchery, larvae preferred oyster shells (17,174 ± 659 spats/m2) over clay prototypes (2917 ± 111 spats/m2) and spat collectors (1451 ± 160 spats/m2). Microbial analysis revealed a shift towards cyanobacteria and Woeseia species, with Pseudoalteromonadaceae, a genus previously linked to both stimulating and inhibiting larvae settlement, detected only on clay surfaces. Despite challenges, the clay prototypes demonstrated potential as sustainable substrates for restoration, particularly in managed “spats-on-reefs” strategies. This research highlights the importance of environmental monitoring, microbial interactions, and substrate optimization in enhancing restoration success for O. edulis populations. Further investigations are recommended to refine clay designs and assess their broader applicability under variable environmental conditions.

Urban china in Transformation:Hybrid Economy,Juxtaposed space,and New Testing Ground for Geographical Enquiries

History has brought us into a significant moment when the majority of the human kind has taken up resi-dence in urban settlements. The focus of global urbanization has shifted to the developing world and the center of manufacturing is no longer confined to the Global North. This paper provides a periodical assessment of the current status of china's urban transformation in the global context of a shifting emphasis of industrialization and urbaniza-tion. china's phenomenal urban transformation deserves a special attention not only because of its unparalleled scale and speed but also because of its distinct trajectory of growth that does not conform to normal theoretical ex-pectations. The results of assessment revealed an urban economy with remarkable hybridity, a society that is in-creasingly stratified, polarized, and segregated, and a juxtaposed urban space undergoing restless and pervasive transformation. A decentering world should entail a decentering knowledge production. A critical reflection upon the chinese patterns and processes of urban transformation has identified 4 main issues with great potentials for inno-vative knowledge production, namely: 1) privatization and economic development; 2) state, society, and space; 3) urbanization of capital, labor, and land; and 4) the environment and chinese political ecology. The paper closes with the remark that a rapidly transforming urban china has presented itself as a fertile and resourceful testing ground for critical and innovative geographic enquiries.

Hepatocellular carcinoma recurrence after liver transplant:An Australian single-centre study

BAcKGROUND Hepatocellular carcinoma(Hcc)is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths *** transplantation(LT)offers the most effective *** recurrence is the strongest risk factor that decreases post-LT survival in patients transplanted for *** rate of Hcc recurrence is generally reported as 8%-20%in the *** predictors of Hcc have already been researched,however,to our knowledge there are no published studies on this topic using Australian *** To determine the rate and identify predictors of Hcc recurrence in a contemporary Western Australian LT *** We performed a retrospective cohort study of all liver transplants in patients with Hcc at sir charles Gairdner Hospital between 2006 and *** was collected from various health record databases and included recipient demographics,serum biochemistry,radiology,operation notes,explant histopathology and details of *** survival of Hcc patients post-LT,stratified for recurrence,was calculated by Kaplan Meier *** and multivariate cox regression was used to determine predictors of Hcc recurrence *** Between 1/1/2006 and 12/31/2021,119 patients were transplanted with Hcc.8.4%of subjects developed recurrent Hcc after LT with median follow-up time of 5.4 *** median time to recurrence was 2.9 years±0.75 *** comparing baseline characteristics,a greater proportion of subjects with recurrence had common characteristics on explant histopathology,including>3 viable nodules(P=0.001),vascular invasion(P=0.003)and poorly differentiated Hcc(P=0.03).Unadjusted survival curves showed lower 1-year,3-year,5-year and 10-year survival rates in subjects with Hcc recurrence compared to those without Hcc recurrence(90%vs 92%,70%vs 88%,42%vs 80%,14%vs 76%,respectively;log rank PcONcLUsION Hcc recurrence was low at 8.4%in this contemporary Australian cohort,however it significantly impacted post-LT *** studies are requir
