Herpes simplex keratitis:A brief clinical overview

The aim of our minireview is to provide a brief overview of the diagnosis,clinical aspects,treatment options,management,and current literature available regarding herpes simplex keratitis(HSK).This type of corneal viral infection is caused by the herpes simplex virus(HSV),which can affect several tissues,including the *** significant aspect of HSK is its potential to cause recurrent episodes of inflammation and damage to the *** the initial infection,the HSV can establish a latent infection in the trigeminal ganglion,a nerve cluster near the *** virus may remain dormant for extended *** reactivation of the virus can occur,leading to recurrent episodes of *** triggering reactivation include stress,illness,immunosuppression,or *** episodes can manifest in different clinical patterns,ranging from mild epithelial involvement to more severe stromal or endothelial *** severity and frequency of recurrences vary among *** cases of HSK,especially those involving the stroma and leading to scarring,can result in vision impairment or even blindness in extreme *** cornea's clarity is crucial for good vision,and scarring can compromise this,potentially leading to visual *** management of HSK involves not only treating acute episodes but also implementing long-term strategies to prevent recurrences and attempt repairs of corneal nerve endings via *** medications,such as oral Acyclovir or topical Ganciclovir,may be prescribed for *** immune response to the virus can contribute to corneal ***,caused by the body's attempt to control the infection,may inadvertently harm the corneal *** should be informed about triggers and advised on measures to minimize the risk of *** summary,the recurrent nature of HSK underscores the importance of both acute and long-term management strategies to preserve corneal health and maintai

Ethmoidal Polyposis, Adenoid Hypertrophy and Tympanic Membrane Perforation—A Case Report

Background: Ethmoidal polyposis coexisting with adenoid enlargement and tympanic membrane perforation is a rare condition in otolaryngological practice. Evidences have shown that antrochoanal polyp often times coexists with adenoid enlargement especially in the young which was in sharp contrast to ethmoidal polyposis occurring in the presence of adenoid enlargement. Moreover, the hidden location of nasopharynx housing the adenoids, coupled with the masking effect of bilateral sinonasal polyps, leads to inadvertent misdiagnosis of this complex pathology with subsequent difficulty in providing effective management. Case Presentation: A 24 year-old lady presented with recurrent bilateral nasal obstruction that became persistent associated with nasal discharge and anosmia. She also had recurrent right otorrhoea with associated hearing loss. Diagnostic rigid nasal endoscopy revealed mucoid discharge with bilateral polypoid masses filling both nasal cavities. Otoendoscopic finding revealed a small (about 5%) central tympanic membrane perforation. A clinical assessment of chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis complicated by chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) was made. A non-contrast CT scan of the paranasal sinuses showed isodense lesions in the nasal cavities, all paranasal sinuses and the entire nasopharynx. She had endoscopic sinus surgery and a nasopharyngeal clearance biopsy. The nasal, paranasal and nasopharyngeal masses had histologic confirmation of inflammatory nasal polyps and lymphoid (adenoid) hyperplasia respectively. Her condition improved remarkably with subsequent medical treatment. She was followed up for 8 months and no recurrence was observed. Conclusion: Sinonasal polyposis can coexist with adenoid hypertrophy and middle ear disease as a single pathological condition. Hence, a high index of suspicion and thorough evaluation become necessary for making timely diagnoses and instituting effective management.

Molecular Docking Studies on Streptomycin Antileishmanial Activity

Resistance to pentavalent antimonial drugs and the lack of vaccines make it urgent to find novel therapeutic options to treat Leishmaniasis, a tropical disease caused by the Leishmania protozoan parasite. The study reported here is to investigate if Streptomycin, an aminoglycoside, and Amphotericin B, the second-line treatment drug, exhibit antileishmanial activity through a similar mechanism. By using MOE (Molecular Operating Environment), we performed molecular docking studies on these drugs binding to a range of targets including ribosome targets in Leishmania and H. sapiens. Our study shows that the two drugs do not bind to the same pockets in Leishmania targets but to the same pockets in the human ribosome, with some differences in interactions. Moreover, our 2D maps indicated that Amphotericin B binds to the A-site in the human cytoplasmic ribosome, whereas streptomycin does not.

Characterisation of the Bacteria and Archaea Community Associated with Wild Oysters, At Three Possible Restoration Sites in the North Sea

With 85% of the global oyster reefs destroyed, there is an urgent need for large scale restoration to benefit from the ecosystem services provided by biogenic oyster reefs and their associated biodiversity, including microorganisms that drive marine biogeochemical cycles. This experiment established a baseline for the monitoring of the bacterial and archaeal community associated with wild oysters, using samples from their immediate environment of the Voordelta, with cohabiting Crassostrea gigas and Ostrea edulis, Duikplaats with only C. gigas attached to rocks, and the Dansk Skaldyrcentre, with no onsite oysters. The microbial profiling was carried out through DNA analysis of samples collected from the surfaces of oyster shells and their substrate, the sediment and seawater. Following 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing and bioinformatics, alpha indices implied high species abundance and diversity in sediment but low abundance in seawater. As expected, Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes and Thaumarchaeota dominated the top 20 OTUs. In the Voordelta, OTUs related to Colwellia, Shewanella and Psychrobium differentiated the oysters collected from a reef with those attached to rocks. Duikplaats were distinct for sulfur-oxidizers Sulfurimonas and sulfate-reducers from the Sva 0081 sediment group. Archaea were found mainly in sediments and the oyster associated microbiome, with greater abundance at the reef site, consisting mostly of Thaumarchaeota from the family Nitrosopumilaceae. The oyster free site displayed archaea in sediments only, and algal bloom indicator microorganisms from the Rhodobacteraceae, Flavobacteriaceae family and genus [Polaribacter] huanghezhanensis, in addition to the ascidian symbiotic partner, Synechococcus. This study suggests site specific microbiome shifts, influenced by the presence of oysters and the type of substrate.

Fulminant myocarditis induced by SARS-CoV-2 infection without severe lung involvement:insights into COvID-19 pathogenesis

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)infection often leads to pulmonary *** sequelae,including myocarditis and heart failure,have also been ***,the study presents two fulminant myocarditis cases infected by SARS-CoV-2 exhibiting remarkable elevation of cardiac biomarkers without significant pulmonary injury,as determined by imaging *** staining reveals the viral antigen within cardiomyocytes,indicating that SARSCoV-2 could directly infect the *** full viral genomes from respiratory,anal,and myocardial specimens are obtained via next-generation *** analyses of the whole genome and spike gene indicate that viruses in the myocardium/pericardial effusion and anal swabs are closely related and cluster together yet diverge from those in the respiratory *** addition,unique mutations are found in the anal/myocardial strains compared to the respiratory strains,suggesting tissue-specific virus mutation and *** findings indicate genetically distinct SARS-CoV-2 variants have infiltrated and disseminated within myocardial tissues,independent of pulmonary injury,and point to different infection routes between the myocardium and respiratory tract,with myocardial infections potentially arising from intestinal *** findings highlight the potential for systemic SARS-CoV-2 infection and the importance of a thorough multi-organ assessment in patients for a comprehensive understanding of thepathogenesisof COVID-19.
