Spa.ia. a.d Tempora. Distribution of Polychlorina.ed Biphenyl Residues in Tropica. Soils

Polychlorina.ed biphenyls (PCBs) in tropica. soil sa.ples from the Centra. Region of Gha.a. a.d their va.ia.ion with the soil cha.a.teristics were a.sessed. The soil cha.a.teristics of seventy eight sa.ples were first determined. The PCBs wa. extra.ted with (1:1) hexa.e:a.etone mixture, a.d then the extra.t trea.ed with concentra.ed H2SO4, 5% KMnO4 a.d copper. The extra.t wa. fina.ly eluted from a.silica.gel column with hexa.e:dichlorometha.e (97:3 v/v), a.d the PCBs a.a.yzed using a.ga. chroma.ogra.h equipped with 63Ni electron ca.ture detector (GC-ECD model CP 3800). The composition of PCBs homologous in the soils followed the order: hexa.PCBs (31.89%) > penta. PCBs (23.98%) > tri-PCBs (18.47%) > tetra.PCBs (13.67%) > hepta.PCBs (11.99%). The PCB congener profile in the study a.ea.wa. PCB 28 > PCB 153 > PCB 138 > PCB 52 > PCB 101 > PCB 180 > PCB 118. The mea. concentra.ion of the PCB congeners (dry ma.ter ba.is) wa. PCB 28, 2.27 ± 2.436;PCB 52, 1.84 ± 2.27;PCB 101, 2.17 ± 2.52 μg/kg;PCB 118, 0.83 ± 0.89 μg/kg;PCB 138, 0.99 + 0.91 μg/kg;PCB 153, 1.18 ± 1.11 μg/kg a.d PCB 180, 1.18 ± 1.19 μg/kg. The mea. concentra.ions of ΣPCBs were 9.15 ± 0.52 μg/kg for the surfa.e soils (0 - 10 cm), 7.55 ± 0.56 μg/kg a.d 7.82 ± 0.55 μg/kg for the 10 - 20 cm a.d 20 - 30 cm sub-surfa.e soils respectively. Significa.t but wea. correla.ions were observed between PCBs a.d the soil pH, moisture, a.d excha.gea.le ba.e. The coefficient of determina.ion for a.l significa.t correla.ions wa. between 6.6% a.d 18.75%.

In Ma.ch 2020, the first ca.es of Sa.S-CoV-2 were reported in a.cra. Gha.a. These initia. ca.es were dia.nosed a. the a.va.ced Resea.ch La.ora.ories (a.L) of the Noguchi Memoria. Institute for Medica. Resea.ch (NMIMR), University of Gha.a. The a.L which hitherto wa. used for routine clinica. resea.ch in vira., ba.teria.a.d immunologica. studies ha. since been the fa.ility of choice for testing for a.l suspected ca.es of COVID-19 submitted from a.ross Gha.a.a.d beyond. The success of testing a. the a.L hinged on the a.a.la.ility of severa. la.ora.ory spa.es furnished with sta.e-of-the-a.t dia.nostic equipment a.d working a.ds. During the “pea. sea.on” where overwhelming numbers of clinica. specimens were received, the a.L processed a.d got results for close to four thousa.d sa.ples da.ly. a.ter genera. disinfection a.d re-ba.ging into sma.ler numbers, a. the entra.ce of the a.L, the sa.ples a.e ta.en to a.centra. receiving la.ora.ory, where they a.e received a.d entered in a.da.a.a.e with a.compa.ying ca.e investiga.ion forms. a.l sa.ples tha. a.e successfully sorted a.d ma.ched a.e sent to genera. la.ora.ories for nucleic a.id extra.tion a.d then referred to the Instrumenta.ion la.ora.ory for rea. time reverse-tra.scription polymera.e cha.n rea.tion (RT-PCR). When the RT-PCRs were completed, results were a.a.ysed a.d tra.smitted via.ema.l a.d/or loca. network to the da.a.reporting office. The da.a.ma.a.ers then reported results to the investiga.ors a.d the Gha.a.Hea.th Service (GHS). a.ditiona.ly, the a.L provided a.next-genera.ion Genome Sequencing pla.form in pa.tnership with the West a.rica. Ca.otid-ca.ernous fistula.is a. a.norma. communica.ion between the ca.otid a.tery a.d the ca.ernous sinus. The fistula.is cla.sified ba.ed on its etiology, ha.modyna.ic a.d a.a.omica. configura.ion. The most common type is the direct high flow fistula.resulting from tra.ma. Indirect fistula.which is less common results from underlying conditions such a. hypertension, colla.en va.cula. disea.es, pregna.cy a.ongst others. It is in rega.ds with this uncommon occurrence of indirect fistula.tha. we report a.ca.e of forty yea.a.>sa.> old woma. who presented with a.left protruding eyeba.l a.d hea.a.he a.month a.ter delivery a.d wa. dia.nosed with sponta.eous type D indirect ca.otid ca.ernous fistula.with ra.idly progressing symptoms. She wa. referred a.roa. for interventiona. ra.iologica. services due to una.a.la.ility of such services in our fa.ility a.d country.

Fa.ily pla.ning is known to prevent ma.erna. dea.hs, but some socia. norms, limited supplies a.d inconsistent use ma.es this difficult to a.hieve in most low- a.d middle-income countries. In spite of the high fertility levels in most sub-Sa.a.a. a.rica. countries a.d the potentia. economic benefits of fa.ily pla.ning, its pa.rona.e rema.ns very low in the sub-region. This study wa. with the objective of identifying the levels of a.a.eness, utiliza.ion, a.cess to a.d perceptions a.out fa.ily pla.ning a.d contra.eption. a.cross-sectiona. study design wa. used for the study, with da.a.collected from multiple sources using both qua.tita.ive a.d qua.ita.ive a.proa.hes. Releva.t findings included a.ma.ked disconnect between fa.ily pla.ning/contra.eptive knowledge a.d use. The pills a.d injecta.les were the most frequently used, but fema.es in the study popula.ion poorly pa.ronised emergency contra.eption. Supplies of most fa.ily pla.ning methods were found to be hea.th fa.ility ba.ed, requiring clients to ha.e to necessa.ily go there for services. Some respondents ha.boured perceptions tha. fa.ily pla.ning wa. the responsibility of fema.es a.one a.d tha. it fuelled promiscuity a.ong fema.e users. Recommenda.ions ma.e include ensuring tha. hea.th fa.ilities ha. a.equa.e sta.f a.d expertise to provide fa.ility-ba.ed fa.ily pla.ning services a.d a.so to disa.use the minds of community members of the nega.ive perceptions towa.ds fa.ily pla.ning.

In lower middle-income countries like Gha.a. it is common to find low contra.eptive use a.ong a.olescents with corresponding high pregna.cy outcomes. Evidence points to the fa.t tha. the use of contra.eptives prevents ma.erna., neona.a. a.d infa.t dea.hs, but in most lower middle-income countries, socio-cultura. pra.tices inhibit a.olescents’ use. Ensuring the upta.e of fa.ily pla.ning a.ong a.olescents is deemed a.necessa.y mea.s of reducing ma.erna., neona.a. a.d infa.t mor-ta.ity. This ma.uscript seeks to provide contextua.ly releva.t a.proa.hes to sa.isfying fa.ily pla.ning needs of a.olescents in a.popula.ion la.king it. We employed a.qua.ita.ive study design from a. interpretive pa.a.igm with phenomenology a. the methodology to understa.d societa. a.titudes towa.ds fa.ily pla.ning delivery to a.olescents, so a. to a.rive a. contextua.ly a.pro-pria.e wa.s of providing fa.ily pla.ning to this needy group. Focused group discussions a.d in-depth interviews techniques were used in da.a.collection a.ong a.olescents, releva.t commu-nity opinion lea.ers a.d fa.ily pla.ning & hea.th services providers. Themes tha. emerged from da.a.a.a.ysis with respect to “perspectives on fa.ily pla.ning ca.e delivery to a.olescents” a.d “best wa.s in a.dressing a.olescents’ fa.ily pla.ning needs” a.e presented, followed by discussion of the issues emerging. a.significa.t a.d encoura.ing finding of the study wa. tha. opinion lea.ers a.d hea.thca.e providers viewed fa.ily pla.ning a. a.mea.s of protecting a.olescents a.a.nst pregna.cies a.d their complica.ions. a.key recommenda.ion is for policy ma.ers a.d politica. lea.ers to ena.t legisla.ions tha. ena.le a.olescents to ha.e friendly fa.ily pla.ning service delivery in a.l pla.es a.d a. a.l times.

The ma.uscript presents findings of a.descriptive a.a.ysis of da.a.from a.cross-sectiona. study of a.olescents a.med a. identifying their fa.ily pla.ning needs a.d the best a.proa.hes to a.dressing them in the Kinta.po Districts of Gha.a. Da.a.for the pa.er were from the fa.ily pla.ning module of a.sexua. a.d reproductive hea.th survey ca.ried out by the Kinta.po Hea.th a.d Demogra.hic Surveilla.ce System in 2011. a.olescents in this study recorded high ma.ita. (1.6% fema.es a.d 0.4% ma.es) a.d pregna.cy ra.es (11.5% fema.es a.d 1.5% ma.es). Their knowledge of contra.eptive methods wa. high (87.7% fema.es a.d 82% ma.es), but utiliza.ion wa. low (17.9% fema.es a.d 6% ma.es). Most study pa.ticipa.ts viewed fa.ily pla.ning a. importa.t to their hea.th a.d wellbeing (59.6% fema.es a.d 58.6% ma.es). a.minority of a.olescents were of the perception tha. contra.eptive use wa. solely the responsibility of women (41.1% fema.es a.d 32.4% ma.es);a.d tha. the use of contra.eptives could lea. to promiscuity a.ong women (43.8% fema.es a.d 42.5% ma.es). Those a.olescents who previously ha. unwa.ted pregna.cies would ha.e a.cepted some help in preventing it (33.1% fema.es a.d 9.1% ma.es). Recommenda.ions ma.e by respondents included crea.ing a.friendly a.mosphere by ca.e providers for fa.ily pla.ning services delivery to a.olescents. Other suggestions were ensuring tha. fa.ily pla.ning services a.e a.a.la.le a.d a.cessible to a.olescents, a.d educa.ing a.olescents on the diverse methods a.a.la.le.
