Recent advances in microvascular autologous breast reconstruction after ablative tumor surgery

Breast cancer is a ubiquitous disease and one of the leading causes of death in women in western societies. With overall increasing survival rates, the number of patients who need post-mastectomy reconstruction is on the rise. Especially since its psychological benefits have been broadly recognized, breast reconstruction has become a key component of breast cancer treatment. Evolving from the early beginnings of breast reconstruction with synthetic implants in the 1960 s, microsurgical tissue transfer is on the way to become the gold standard for post oncology restoration of the breast. Particularly since the advent of perforator based free flap surgery, free tissue transfer has become as safe option for breast reconstruction with low morbidity. The lower abdominal skin and subcutaneous fat tissue typically offer enough volume to create an aesthetically satisfying breast mound. Nowadays, the most commonly used flap from this donor site is the deep inferior epigastric artery perforator flap. If the lower abdomen is not available as a donor site, the gluteal area and thigh provide a number of flaps suitable for breast recon-struction. If the required breast volume is small, and there is enough tissue available on the upper medial thigh, then a transverse upper gracilis flap may be a practicable method to reconstruct the breast. In case of a higher amount of required volume, a gluteal artery perforator flap is the best choice. However, what is crucial in addition to selecting the best flap option for the individual patient is the timing of the operation. In patients with confirmed post-mastectomy radiation therapy, it is advisable to perform microvascular breast reconstruction only in a delayed fashion.

On the experimental characterization of the fluid volume influence on the friction between rough surfaces

To reduce the usage of classical lubricants in deep drawing,a new tribological system based on volatile lubricants was ***,a volatile medium is injected under high pressure into the interstice between drawing tool and sheet *** on temperature and pressure,the temporary lubricant may exist in its gaseous or liquid *** this study,a novel high fluid pressure tribometer was designed to investigate the friction and wear of dry steel contacts under comparable conditions like in dry deep ***,a new ball-on-disc tribometer was designed and integrated into a high-pressure *** specifically investigate the effects of different environments(technical air,liquid and gaseous carbon dioxide,nitrogen,argon)at atmospheric and high pressure(0.1 mPa,6 mPa)on tribology,the specimens and all components were operating *** the experiments,the friction was measured *** show that the highest friction occurs in air and the lowest in carbon dioxide *** to the experiments,the wear of the specimens was assessed along with changes in surface chemistry related to tribochemical ***,the tribology of the dry sliding contacts is correlated to changes of the surface *** differences as well as similarities regarding the different fluid environments are *** the results show,the differences between the media used are most pronounced at elevated ***,this work gives clear indications on the suitability of volatile lubricants in dry friction or rather gas lubrication,especially for dry deep drawing.

Does laser surface texturing really have a negative impact on the fatigue lifetime of mechanical components?

A Cambrian micro-lobopodian and the evolution of arthropod locomotion and reproduction

The evolutionary success of arthropods, the most abundant and diverse animal group, is mainly based on their segmented body and jointed appendages, features that had evolved most likely already before the Cambrian. The first arthropod-like animals, the lobopodians from the Early Cambrian, were unsclerotized and worm-like, and they had unjointed tubular legs. Here we describe the first three-dimensionally preserved Cambrian lobopodian. The material presented of Orstenotubulus evamuellerae gen. et sp. nov. is the smallest and youngest of a lobopodian known. O. evamuellerae shows strikingly detailed similarities to Recent tardigrades and/or onychophorans in its cellular-structured cuticle and the telescopic spines. It also shows similarities to other, longer known lobopodians, but which are ten times as large as the new form. These similarities include the finely annulated body and legs, which is characteristic also for Recent onychophorans, and paired humps continuing into spines situated dorsally to the leg insertions, a feature lacking in the extant forms. The morphology of O. evamuellerae not only elucidates our knowledge about lobopodians, but also aids in a clearer picture of the early evolution of arthropods. An example is the single ventral gonopore between a limb pair of O. evamuellerae, which indicates that a single gonopore, as developed in onychophorans, tardigrades, pentastomids, myriapods and insects, might represent the plesiomorphic state for Arthropoda, while the paired state in chelicerates and crustaceans was convergently achieved. Concerning life habits, the lateral orientation of the limbs and their anchoring spines of the new lobopodian imply that early arthropods were crawlers rather than walkers.

Polyamines are small aliphatic amines found in almost all organisms,ranging from bacteria to plants and *** most plants,putrescine,the metabolic precursor for longer polyamines,such as spermidine and spermine,is produced from arginine,with either agmatine or ornithine as *** we show that Arabidopsis thaliana(Arabidopsis)arginine de-carboxylase 1(ADC1),one of the two known arginine decarboxylases in Arabidopsis,not only synthesizes agmatine from arginine,but also converts *** to *** analyses indicate that duplication and neofunctionalization of ADC1 and NATA1,the enzymes that synthesize Nδ-acetylormithine in Arabidopsis,co-occur in a small number of related species in the *** ADC2,which is localized in the chloroplasts,ADC1 is in the endoplasmic reticulum together with NATA1,an indication that these two enzymes have access to the same substrate ***,these results are con-sistent with a model whereby NATA1 and ADC1 to-gether provide a pathway for the synthesis of N-acetylputrescine in Arabidopsis.

mgCl_(2)–NaCl–KCl salts mixture shows great potential as a high-temperature(>700°C)thermal energy storage material in next-generation concentrated solar power *** mg into molten mgCl_(2)–NaCl–KCl salt as a corrosion inhibitor is one of the most effective and cost-effective methods to mitigate the molten salt corrosion of commercial Fe–Cr–Ni ***,it is found in this work that both stainless steel 310 and Incoloy 800H samples were severely corroded after 500 h immersion test at 700°C when the alloy samples directly contacted with the over-added mg in the liquid *** corrosion attack is different from the classical impurity-driven corrosion in molten chloride salts found in previous *** analysis indicates that Ni preferentially leaches out of alloy matrix due to the tendency to form mgNi_(2)/mg_(2)Ni *** Ni-depletion leads to the formation of a porous corrosion layer on both alloys,with the thickness around 204μm(stainless steel 310)and 1300μm(Incoloy 800H),*** results suggest that direct contact of liquid mg with Ni-containing alloys should be avoided during using mg as a corrosion inhibitor for mgCl_(2)–NaCl–KCl or other chlorides for high temperature heat storage and transfer.

Using high-resolution aerial images to study gully development at the regional scale in southern China

There are 239,100 gullies in southern China,which cause the degradation of ecological ***,studies on gully development at the regional scale is relatively *** purpose of this study is to analyze the regional gully dynamics and explore how land use and topographic factors affect gully *** data consists of land use maps derived from high-resolution images from 2004 to 2014,and topography maps from a digital elevation model with a pixel size of 8 m×8 m in two 25-km2 study sites of Anxi(AX)and Xingning county(XN).The following results were obtained:(1)AX gullies decreased from 2006 to 2014 while XN first increased from 2004 to 2009,and then decreased from 2009 to *** AX and XN gully area in percentage of the total area ranged from 1%to 3%,which was higher than the average 0.25%of the whole southern China by the artificial survey in 2005.(2)most of AX and XN gullies occurred along the ridgeline and had the close relationships with the upstream contributing area and slope gradient.(3)New gullies developed on the exposed land and *** lost gullies were converted into forestland and *** fact,most of these gullies were only covered by vegetation,not real *** results proved that gully decreased,but construction of roads and buildings intensified gully ***,these findings reveal that vegetation protection and ecological restoration should be adopted in southern China.

Targeting Plant Ethylene Responses by Controlling Essential Protein-Protein Interactions in the Ethylene Pathway

The gaseous plant hormone ethylene regulates many processes of high agronomic relevance throughout the life span of plants. A central element in ethylene signaling is the endoplasmic reticulum （ER）-Iocalized membrane protein ETHYLENE INSENSITIVE2 （EIN2）. Recent studies indicate that in response to ethylene, the extra-membranous C-terminal end of EIN2 is proteolytically processed and translocated from the ER to the nucleus. Here, we report that the conserved nuclear localization signal （NLS） mediating nuclear import of the EIN2 C-terminus provides an important domain for complex formation with ethylene receptor ETHYLENE RESPONSE1 （ETR1）. EIN2 lacking the NLS domain shows strongly reduced affinity for the receptor. Interaction of EIN2 and ETR1 is also blocked by a synthetic peptide of the NLS motif. The corre- sponding peptide substantially reduces ethylene responses in planta. Our results uncover a novel mecha- nism and type of inhibitor interfering with ethylene signal transduction and ethylene responses in plants. Disruption of essential protein-protein interactions in the ethylene signaling pathway as shown in our study for the EIN2-ETR1 complex has the potential to guide the development of innovative ethylene antagonists for modern agriculture and horticulture.
