BACKGROUND Transfemoral aortic valve replacement(TAVR)is the standard treatment for elderly patients with aortic valve stenosis.Although safe and well-established,there is a risk of intraprocedural hemodynamic instability and silent cerebral embolism,which can lead to a decline in neurocognitive function and dementia.In clinical practice,comprehensive cognitive testing is difficult to perform.AI-assisted digital applications may help to optimize diagnosis and monitoring.METHODS Neurocognitive function was assessed by validated psychometric tests using“Δelta-App”,which uses artificial intelligence and computational linguistic methods for extraction and analysis.Memory function was assessed using the‘Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer’s Disease’(CERAD)word list and digit span task(DST)before TAVR and before hospital discharge.The study is registered in the German Register of Clinical Trials(https://drks.de/search/de/trial/DRKS00020813).RESULTS From October 2020 until March 2022,141 patients were enrolled at University Hospital Heart Centre Brandenburg.Mean age was 81±6 years,42.6%were women.Time between the pre-and post-interventional test was on average 6±3 days.Memory function before TAVR was found to be below average in relation to age and educational level.The pre-post TAVR comparison showed significant improvements in the wordlist repeat,P<0.001 and wordlist recall test of CERAD,P<0.001.There were no changes in the digital span test.CONCLUSIONS Despite impaired preoperative memory function before TAVR,no global negative effect on memory function after TVAR was detected.The improvements shown in the word list test should be interpreted as usual learning effects in this task.

With big-data driven materials research,the new paradigm of materials science,sharing and wide accessibility of data are becoming crucial aspects.Obviously,a prerequisite for data exchange and big-data analytics is standardization,which means using consistent and unique conventions for,e.g.,units,zero base lines,and file formats.There are two main strategies to achieve this goal.One accepts the heterogeneous nature of the community,which comprises scientists from physics,chemistry,bio-physics,and materials science,by complying with the diverse ecosystem of computer codes and thus develops“converters”for the input and output files of all important codes.These converters then translate the data of each code into a standardized,codeindependent format.The other strategy is to provide standardized open libraries that code developers can adopt for shaping their inputs,outputs,and restart files,directly into the same code-independent format.In this perspective paper,we present both strategies and argue that they can and should be regarded as complementary,if not even synergetic.The represented appropriate format and conventions were agreed upon by two teams,the Electronic Structure Library(ESL)of the European Center for Atomic and Molecular Computations(CECAM)and the NOvel MAterials Discovery(NOMAD)Laboratory,a European Centre of Excellence(CoE).A key element of this work is the definition of hierarchical metadata describing state-of-the-art electronic-structure calculations.

Effect of NaCl on growth and ion relations in two salt-tolerant strains of Paxillus involutus

The effect of NaCl on growth, biomass and ion relations of two salt-tolerant isolates of Paxillus involutus, MAJ and NAU were investigated. The two Paxillus strains were exposed to the following concentrations of NaCl： 0, 100, 200 and 500 mmol·L^-1. Growth of MAJ and NAU was enhanced by 100 mmol·L^-1 NaCl but severely inhibited at the concentration of 500 mmol·L^-1. NAU exhibited a greater capacity to exclude Na^＋ and Cl^- under all salinity levels, whereas the salt-includer MAJ had a higher capacity in nutrient uptake under salt stress. The ratios Na^＋/K^＋, Na^＋/Ca^2＋ and Na^＋/Mg^2＋ in NaCl-treated MAJ and NAU did not increase at levels of 100 and 200 mmol·L^-1 NaCl but markedly increased at 500 mmol·L^-1. This suggests that the two strains, especially MAJ, enhanced nutrient uptake corresponding to the increased Na^＋ influx at moderate salinity. We conclude that both MAJ and NAU are able to tolerate 500 mmol·L^-1 NaCl but there are species-specific differences in retaining ionic homeostasis in the two Paxillus strains. NAU is a salt-excluder, MAJ is a salt-includer but retains a high capacity in nutrient selectivity under saline conditions. Their definite mechanisms to enhance salt tolerance of mycorrhizal hosts need further study.
