High geo-stress and its engineering problems have severely affected the development of civil infrastructures in western China. The problems include high rock slope instabilities,rock burst,gas explosion and large-scale soft rock deformation in deep *** paper investigates the distribution of the high geo-stresses and the models of the stress concentration areas in the eastern margin of Qinghai-Tibet plateau so that a solid foundation can be formed to address the *** investigation is based on a comprehensive analysis of the previous research data of the eastern margin and uses remote sensing techniques,geophysics,geochemistry,and large scale geological surveying *** investigation has found that some special tectonic zones have high *** high geo-stresses are located at(1) the convergent boundary areas between two fault blocks with large strength differences,(2) the tectonic necks in front of active fault blocks,and(3) the intersection and/or termination areas of faults within the fault *** example for(1) is the north Qilian high geo-stress *** example for(2) is the Minshan high geo-stress area in the northwest ***,the investigation has summarized six basic models to characterize the high geo-stress concentration *** first one is the convergent stress concentration model at the boundary of two fault *** other five stress concentration modes are oblique fissures or intersecting areas,areas without lower velocity layer in the crust,areas of compression induced tensile cracking,tectonic wedge areas,and tectonic neck areas,respectively.

Utilizing oil extracted from waste engine oil and waste plastics, by pyrolysis, as a filel for internal combustion engines has been demonstrated to be one of the best available waste management methods. Separate blends of fuel from waste engine oil and waste plastic oil was prepared by mixing with diesel and experimental investigation is conducted to study engine performance, combustion and exhaust emissions. It is observed that carbon monoxide （CO） emission increases by 50% for 50% waste plastic oil （50WPO：50D） and by 58% for 50% waste engine oil （50WEO：50D） at full load as compared to diesel. Unburnt hydrocarbon （HC） emission increases by 16% for 50WPO：50D and by 32% for 50WEO：50D as compared to diesel at maximum load. Smoke is fotmd to decrease at all loading conditions for 50WPO：50D operation, but it is comparatively higher for 50WEO：50D operation. 50WPO：50D operation shows higher brake thermal efficiency for all loads as compared to 50WEO：50D and diesel fuel operation. Exhaust gas temperature is higher at all loads tbr 50WPO：50D and 50WEO：50D as compared to diesel fuel operation.

The conflation of geographic datasets is one of the key technologies in the realm of spatial data capture and integration in geographic information system (GIS). Map conflation is a complex process of matching and merging spatial data. Due to various reasons such as errors in original data related to map data discrepancies,a great amount of uncertainties exists during the process and this will result in errors in featuring matching,especially point feature. Thus,it is vital to develop the method to detect the errors in feature matching and further the conflation results will not be affected. In this paper,error matching detection and robust estimation adjustment methods are proposed for map conflation. The characteristics of errors in feature matching are first analyzed,then a new approach for map conflation based on the least-squares adjustment is presented,and a robust estimation adjustment method is further proposed to detect and process matching errors. The results of the map conflation test show that the proposed method not only determines the errors in feature matching,but also obtains the optimal merging results in map conflation.

In this article, numerical modeling of borehole radar for well logging in time domain is developed using pseudo-spectral time domain algorithm in axisymmetric cylindrical coordinate for proximate true formation model. The conductivity and relative permittivity logging curves are obtained from the data of borehole radar for well logging. Since the relative permittivity logging curve is not affected by salinity of formation water, borehole radar for well logging has obvious advantages as compared with conventional electrical logging. The borehole radar for well logging is a one-transmitter and two-receiver logging tool. The conductivity and relative permittivity logging curves are obtained successfully by measuring the amplitude radio and the time difference of pulse waveform from two receivers. The calculated conductivity and relative permittivity logging curves are close to the true value of surrounding formation, which tests the usability and reliability of borehole radar for well logging. The numerical modeling of borehole radar for well logging laid the important foundation for researching its logging tool.

Coretop sediment samples covering water depth from 247 to 1474 m in the Northwestern Indian Ocean were analyzed. 6 species of Uvigerina among 77 species and 11 species-complexes were found in all 26 samples. They are Uvigerina auberiana d’Orbigny, Uvigerina hispida Schwa-ger, Uvigerina peregrina Cushman, Uvigerina proboscidea Schwager, Uvigerina spinicostata Cushman and Jarvis, and Uvigerina sp. Characteristics of Uvigerina are (1) high abundance due to rich food supply and less competitors; (2) low diversity because only those eurytopic / opportunistic forms can survive environment of low dissolved oxygen value; (3) various test shapes and ornamentations which are controlled by respiration or gas exchange of the cell; and (4) abundance of Uvigerina is well related with environmental factors such as water depth, oxygen content and productivityor food supply. The 8.0 Mw Wenchuan earthquake triggered widespread and large scale landslides in mountainous regions. An approach was used to map and assess landslide susceptibility in a given area. A numerical rating system was applied to five factors that contribute to slope instability. Factors such as lithology, topography, streams and faults have an important influence as event-controlling factors for landslide susceptibility assessment. A final map is provided to show areas of low, medium, and high landslide susceptibility. Areas identified as having high landslide susceptibility were located in the central, northeastern, and far south regions of the study area. The assessment results will help decision makers to select safe sites for emergency placement of refuges and plan for future reconstruction. The maps may also be used as a basis for landslide risk management in the study area.

The factors of geomorphology, geological setting, effect of ground water and environment dynamic factors (e.g. rainfall and artificial water recharge) should be integrated in the discrimination of the stability of the ancient landslide. As the criterion of landslide stability has been studied, the artificial neural network model was then applied to discriminate the stability of the ancient landslide in the impounding area of the Three Gorges project on the Yangtze River, China. The model has the property of self adaptive identifying and integrating complex qualitative factors and quantitative factors. The results of the artificial neural network model are coincided well with what were gained by classical limit equilibrium analysis (the Bishop method and Janbu method) and by other comprehensive discrimination methods.
