Background Schistosomiasis is highly endemic in sub-Saharan Africa and frequently imported to Europe. Male urogenital manifestations are often neglected. We aimed to ascertain the prevalence of genitourinary clinical signs and symptoms among long-term African migrants in a non-endemic European country using a serology *** We carried out a prospective, community-based cross-sectional study of adult male migrants from sub-Saharan Africa living in *** serology tests and microscopic urine examinations were carried out, and clinical data were obtained from an electronic medical record search and a structured *** We included 388 adult males, mean age 43.5 years [Standard Deviation (SD) = 12.0, range: 18–76]. The median time since migration to the European Union was 17 [Interquartile range (IQR): 11–21] years. The most frequent country of origin was Senegal (n = 179, 46.1%). Of the 338, 147 (37.6%) tested positive forSchistosoma. Parasite eggs were present in the urine of only 1.3%. nine genitourinary clinical items were significantly associated with positiveSchistosoma serology results: pelvic pain (45.2%;OR = 1.57, 95%CI: 1.0–2.4), pain on ejaculation (14.5%;OR = 1.85, 95%CI: 1.0–3.5), dyspareunia (12.4%;OR = 2.45, 95%CI: 1.2–5.2), erectile dysfunction (9.5%;OR = 3.10, 95%CI: 1.3–7.6), self-reported episodes of infertility (32.1%;OR = 1.69, 95%CI: 1.0–2.8), haematuria (55.2%;OR = 2.37, 95%CI: 1.5–3.6), dysuria (52.1%;OR = 2.01, 95%CI: 1.3–3.1), undiagnosed syndromic STIs (5.4%), and orchitis (20.7%;OR = 1.81, 95%CI: 1.0–3.1). Hybrid low salinity water and surfactant process for enhancing heavy oil recovery

Combining low salinity water (LSW) with surfactants has an enormous potential for enhancing oil recovery processes. However, there is no consensus about the mechanisms involved, in addition to the fact that several studies have been conducted in model systems, while experiments with rocks and reservoir fluids are scarce. This study presents a core-flooding experiment of LSW injection, with and without surfactant, using the core and heavy oil samples obtained from a sandstone reservoir in southeastern Mexico. The effluents and the crude oil obtained at each stage were analyzed. The study was complemented by tomographic analysis. The results revealed that LSW injection and hybrid process with surfactants obtained an increase of 11.4 percentage points in recovery factor. Various phenomena were caused by LSW flooding, such as changes in wettability and pH, ion exchange, mineral dissolution, detachment of fines and modification of the hydrocarbon profile. In the surfactant flooding, the reduction of interfacial tension and alteration of wettability were the main mechanisms involved. The findings of this work also showed that the conditions believed to be necessary for enhanced oil recovery with LSW, such as the presence of kaolinite or high acid number oil, are not relevant.

Gut passage of epigeous ectomycorrhizal fungi by two opportunistic mycophagous rodents

Mycophagists can influence fungal diversity within their home ranges by ensuring the continued and effective dispersal of spores from one site to another. However, the passage of spores through the digestive tract of vertebrates can affect the activity and viability of the spores ingested. This phenomenon has been rarely documented in opportunistic mycophagists consuming epigeous fungi. Using laboratory experiments, we investigated the activity and viability of spores of two epigeous ectomycorrhizal fungal species （Laccaria trichodermophora and SuiUus tomentosus） after passage through the digestive tract of two opportunistic mycophagous small rodents, the volcano mouse Peromyscus alstoni and the deer mouse P maniculatus. We found that passage through the gut of either species of rodent had a significant effect on spore activity and viability for both fungal species. The proportion of active spores （0.37-0.40） of L. trichodermophora in the feces of both species of rodents was less than that recorded for the control （0.82）. However, the proportion of active spores （0.644）.73） of S. tomentosus in the feces of each species of rodent was higher than in the control （0.40）. On the other hand, the viability of spores was lower （0.26-0.30 in L. trichodermophora and 0.604）.69 in S. tomentosus） for both fungi when consumed by either rodent relative to the controls （0.90 in L. trichodermophora and 0.82 in S. tomentosus）. These findings suggest that these rodent species may be effective dispersers of both epigeous fungi [Current Zoology 57 （3）： 293-299, 2011].

Does wetland watershed land use influence amphibian larval development? A relevant effect of agriculture on biota

Agriculture practices have been widely proposed as the major cause of amphibian population decline. However, the majority of these results have been based on laboratory experiments. The present study was conducted to test the repercussion of wetland sediment provenance on amphibian larval *** bufo larvae were used in two dif ferent treatments in an outdoor experiment, the ?rst one using sediment from one wetland surrounded by intensive agricultural practices, and the second using sediment with no record of agrochemical uses. A negative ef fect was observed in the agricultural treatment, from subcellular to individual level. The results showed that the sediment from agricultural practices watershed generates a reduction in survival. Furthermore, individuals that developed under this treatment showed a lower total length and a delay in the time necessary to complete metamorphosis; these features are connected with recruitment success. In the same way, biochemical analysis showed high values of lipid peroxidation in metamorphs developing in sediments from an agricultural area. Finally, the results obtained highlight the importance of considering the sediments, not only the water, as origin treatment, allowing us to understand the consequences on amphibian populations that inhabit areas af fected by intensive agriculture.

Farm-scale evaluation of the impact of CrylAb Bt maize on canopy nontarget arthropods： a 3-year study

The cultivation of CrylAb-expressing genetically modified MOn810 （Bt maize） has led to public concern in Europe, regarding its impact on nontarget arthro- pods （nTAs）. We have assessed the potential effects of DKC 6451 YG （MOn810） maize on canopy nTAs in a farm-scale study performed in Central Spain during 3 years. The study focused on hemipteran herbivores （leafhoppers and planthoppers） and hymenopteran parasitic wasps （mymarids） collected by yellow sticky traps, which accounted for 72% of the total number of insects studied. The dynamics and abundance of these groups varied among years, but no significant differences were found between Bt and non-Bt maize, indicating that Bt maize had no negative effect on these taxa. nonetheless, the CrylAb toxin was detected in 2 different arthropods collected from Bt maize foliage, the cicadellids Zyginidia scutellaris and Empoasca spp. A retrospective power analysis on the arthropod abundance data for our field trials has determined that Z. scutellaris and the family My- maridae have high capacity to detect differences between the Bt maize and its isogenic counterpart. The use of these canopy nTAs as surrogates for assessing environmental impacts of Bt maize is discussed.

Optopharmacological control of TRPC channels by coumarin-caged lipids is associated with a phototoxic membrane effect

Photouncaging of second messengers has been successfully employed to gain mechanistic insight of cellular signaling path- ways. One of the most enigmatic processes of ion channel regulation is lipid recognition and lipid-gating of TRPC channels, which represents pivotal mechanisms of cellular Ca2＋ homeostasis. Recently, optopharmacological tools including caged lipid mediators became available, enabling an unprecedented level of temporal and spatial control of the activating lipid species within a cellular environment. Here we tested a commonly used caged ligand approach for suitability to investigate TRPC sig- naling at the level of membrane conductance and cellular Ca2＋ handling. We report a specific photouncaging artifact that is triggered by the cage structure coumarin at UV illumination. Electrophysiological characterization identified a light-dependent membrane effect of coumarin. UV light （340 nm） as used for photouncaging, initiated a membrane conductance specifically in the presence of coumarin as low as 30 pmol L-1 concentrations. This conductance masked the TRPC3 conductance evoked by photouncaging, while TRPC-mediated cellular Ca2＋ responses were largely preserved. The observed light-induced membrane effects of the released caging moiety may well interfere with certain cellular functions, and prompt caution in using couma- fin-caged second messengers in cellular studies.
