Petrogenesis of Granites from the Ediacaran Socorro Batholith,SE Brazil:Constraints from Zircon Dating,Geochemistry and Sr-Nd-Hf Isotopes

Whole rock elemental and Sr-Nd isotope geochemistry and in situ zircon Hf isotope geochemistry were used to identify the sources of the Neoproterozoic granites from the Socorro batholith,Socorro-GuaxupéNappe(SGN),South Brasilia Orogen,*** trace elements and Hf isotope geochemistry provided information about sources and crystallization(T,f_(O2))*** main types of granites built the bulk of the batholiths,beginning with probably pre-collisional~640–630 Ma charnockites,and ending with~610 Ma voluminous post-collisional high-K calc-alkaline(HKCA)Ⅰ-type granites(Bragan?a Paulista-type).Several types of leucogranites were generated from 625 to 610 Ma,spanning the interval from collisional to post-collisional *** charnockite bodies occur in the study area:the~640 Ma Socorro charnockite has remarkable chemical similarities with Braganca Paulista-type granites,but higherε_(Nd)(t)=-6.1 and average zirconε_(Hf)(t)=-9.1 and lower^(86)Sr/^(87)Sr_(t)(0.7093)values,indicative of more juvenile and water-poor ***~633 Ma Atibaia charnockite has distinct geochemical signature(lower Mg^(#)and Sr content;higher Zr),more negativeε_(Nd)(t)=-14.1,similar average zirconε_(Hf)(t)=-8.9,and much higher^(86)Sr/^(87)Sr_(t)=0.7197,probably reflecting a larger component from old *** predominant~610 Ma Bragan?a Paulista-type granites were emplaced in a post-collisional setting,and correspond to porphyritic biotite-hornblende monzogranites of high-K calc-alkaline character with 61 wt.%–67 wt.%SiO_(2),high Mg^(#)(39–42),Sr/Y(19–40),La/Yb(12–69),highly negativeε_(Nd)(t)(-12.3 to-12.9)and zirconε_(Hf)(t)(-12 to-17)and^(87)Sr/^(86)Sr_(t)=0.7119–*** features are interpreted as indicative of magma generation in a thickened crust,where melts from enriched mantle sources emplaced in the lowermost crust,heated host old continental crust rocks(gneisses and granulites)and partially mixed with their melting *** plutons(SiO_(2)>72 wt.%)occur

In-depth analysis of soil management and farmers’perceptions of related risks in two olive grove areas in southern Spain

This manuscript presents a questionnaire-based study aimed to provide a detailed analysis on the different soil management carried out by olive farmers in two representative olive-growing areas in southern Spain(Cordoba and Estepa),their perceptions on cover crop use and the possible influence of the different types of farms and farmers’typologies on these *** results show a relatively large variability of soil management,with fourteen options,as a result of a combination of different alternatives for bare soil and cover crops with the use or not of pruning residues,but with a great similarity between both *** results indicate a high adoption of soil conservation measures in the two study areas,with 63%of farmers using cover crops and 80%a mulch of pruning residues,higher than that reported in previous studies in Southern Spain,and a trend of lower use of these techniques by less experienced and younger *** high penetration of soil conservation measures resulted in a significant reduction of soil erosion risk,as indicated by the relatively low values for the cover and management factor(C)of RUSLE,also calculated and presented in this study,but also the possibility of focusing further efforts on fanners with less *** results indicate the persistence of a minor,but relevant,percentage of farmers using bare soil management(37%)and no mulching(20%),with a moderate concern on the impact of soil erosion on soil degradation and provision of ecosystem *** suggests the need to concentrate efforts also on this cluster of farmers to enhance the success of what seems to be a remarkable expansion of the use of soil conservation measures in recent decades in Southern Spain,but also in similar areas in the Mediterranean basin.

Aerosol transmission of human pathogens:From miasmata to modern viral pandemics and their preservation potential in the Anthropocene record

Ongoing uncertainty over the relative importance of aerosol transmission of COVID-19 is in part rooted in the history of medical science and our understanding of how epidemic diseases can spread through human populations. Ancient Greek medical theory held that such illnesses are transmitted by airborne pathogenic emanations containing particulate matter(“miasmata”). Notable Roman and medieval scholars such as Varro, Ibn al-Khatib and Fracastoro developed these ideas, combining them with early germ theory and the concept of contagion. A widely held but vaguely defined belief in toxic miasmatic mists as a dominant causative agent in disease propagation was overtaken by the science of 19th century microbiology and epidemiology, especially in the study of cholera, which was proven to be mainly transmitted by contaminated water. Airborne disease transmission came to be viewed as burdened by a dubious historical reputation and difficult to demonstrate convincingly. A breakthrough came with the classic mid-20th century work of Wells, Riley and Mills who proved how expiratory aerosols(their “droplet nuclei”)could transport still-infectious tuberculosis bacteria through ventilation systems. The topic of aerosol transmission of pathogenic respiratory diseases assumed a new dimension with the mid-late 20th century “Great Acceleration” of an increasingly hypermobile human population repeatedly infected by different strains of zoonotic viruses, and has taken centre stage this century in response to outbreaks of new respiratory infections that include coronaviruses. From a geoscience perspective, the consequences of pandemic-status diseases such as COVID-19, produced by viral pathogens utilising aerosols to infect a human population currently approaching 8 billion, are far-reaching and unprecedented. Extreme climatic events in relation to global change and their impact on life histories

Extreme weather conditions occur at an increasing rate as evidenced by higher frequency of hurricanes and more extreme precipitation and temperature anomalies. Such extreme environmental conditions will have important implications for all living organisms through greater frequency of reproductive failure and reduced adult survival. We review examples of reproductive failure and reduced survival related to extreme weather conditions. Phenotypic plasticity may not be sufficient to allow adaptation to extreme weather for many animals. Theory predicts reduced reproductive effort as a response to increased stochasticity. We predict that patterns of natural selection will change towards truncation selection as environmental conditions become more extreme. Such changes in patterns of selection may facilitate adaptation to extreme events. However, effects of selection on reproductive effort are difficult to detect. We present a number of predictions for the effects of extreme weather conditions in need of empirical tests. Finally, we suggest a number of empirical reviews that could improve our ability to judge the effects of extreme environmental conditions on life history [Current Zoology 57 （3）： 375-389, 2011].

Farm-scale evaluation of the impact of CrylAb Bt maize on canopy nontarget arthropods： a 3-year study

The cultivation of CrylAb-expressing genetically modified MON810 （Bt maize） has led to public concern in Europe, regarding its impact on nontarget arthro- pods （NTAs）. We have assessed the potential effects of DKC 6451 YG （MON810） maize on canopy NTAs in a farm-scale study performed in Central Spain during 3 years. The study focused on hemipteran herbivores （leafhoppers and planthoppers） and hymenopteran parasitic wasps （mymarids） collected by yellow sticky traps, which accounted for 72% of the total number of insects studied. The dynamics and abundance of these groups varied among years, but no significant differences were found between Bt and non-Bt maize, indicating that Bt maize had no negative effect on these taxa. Nonetheless, the CrylAb toxin was detected in 2 different arthropods collected from Bt maize foliage, the cicadellids Zyginidia scutellaris and Empoasca spp. A retrospective power analysis on the arthropod abundance data for our field trials has determined that Z. scutellaris and the family My- maridae have high capacity to detect differences between the Bt maize and its isogenic counterpart. The use of these canopy NTAs as surrogates for assessing environmental impacts of Bt maize is discussed.

Optopharmacological control of TRPC channels by coumarin-caged lipids is associated with a phototoxic membrane effect

Photouncaging of second messengers has been successfully employed to gain mechanistic insight of cellular signaling path- ways. One of the most enigmatic processes of ion channel regulation is lipid recognition and lipid-gating of TRPC channels, which represents pivotal mechanisms of cellular Ca2＋ homeostasis. Recently, optopharmacological tools including caged lipid mediators became available, enabling an unprecedented level of temporal and spatial control of the activating lipid species within a cellular environment. Here we tested a commonly used caged ligand approach for suitability to investigate TRPC sig- naling at the level of membrane conductance and cellular Ca2＋ handling. We report a specific photouncaging artifact that is triggered by the cage structure coumarin at UV illumination. Electrophysiological characterization identified a light-dependent membrane effect of coumarin. UV light （340 nm） as used for photouncaging, initiated a membrane conductance specifically in the presence of coumarin as low as 30 pmol L-1 concentrations. This conductance masked the TRPC3 conductance evoked by photouncaging, while TRPC-mediated cellular Ca2＋ responses were largely preserved. The observed light-induced membrane effects of the released caging moiety may well interfere with certain cellular functions, and prompt caution in using couma- fin-caged second messengers in cellular studies.

Combining X-ray microtomography with computer simulation for analysis of granular and porous materials

The use of X-ray microtomographic （XMT） methods in analysing particulate systems has expanded rapidly in recent years with the availability of affordable desk-top apparatus. This review presents a summary of the major applications in which computer simulations are explicitly coupled with XMT in the area of granular and porous materials. We envisage two main ways of establishing the coupling between both techniques, based on the transference or exchange of information by using physical or geometrical parameters （i.e. a parametric link through fitting to a process model） or through the direct use of3D XMT digital images （i.e. comparing image pixels and features directly）. Examples of coupled applications are shown for the study of transport properties of rocks, particle packing, mechanical loading and sintering. Often, the link between XMT and computer simulations is based on visual comparisons and we conclude that the use of quantitative parameters such as the number of interparticle contacts, force networks or granule shape to link both techniques is still underrepresented in the literature. Strategies to provide a more robust and quantitative approach to optimise the information obtained from such tomography analyses are proposed. 2010 Chinese Society of Particuology and Institute of Process Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences.
