Background Schistosomiasis is highly endemic in sub-Saharan Africa and frequently imported to Europe. Male urogenital manifestations are often neglected. We aimed to ascertain the prevalence of genitourinary clinical signs and symptoms among long-term African migrants in a non-endemic European country using a serology test.Methods We carried out a prospective, community-based cross-sectional study of adult male migrants from sub-Saharan Africa living in Spain.Schistosoma serology tests and microscopic urine examinations were carried out, and clinical data were obtained from an electronic medical record search and a structured questionnaire.Results We included 388 adult males, mean age 43.5 years [Standard Deviation (SD) = 12.0, range: 18–76]. The median time since migration to the European Union was 17 [Interquartile range (IQR): 11–21] years. The most frequent country of origin was Senegal (n = 179, 46.1%). Of the 338, 147 (37.6%) tested positive forSchistosoma. Parasite eggs were present in the urine of only 1.3%. nine genitourinary clinical items were significantly associated with positiveSchistosoma serology results: pelvic pain (45.2%;OR = 1.57, 95%CI: 1.0–2.4), pain on ejaculation (14.5%;OR = 1.85, 95%CI: 1.0–3.5), dyspareunia (12.4%;OR = 2.45, 95%CI: 1.2–5.2), erectile dysfunction (9.5%;OR = 3.10, 95%CI: 1.3–7.6), self-reported episodes of infertility (32.1%;OR = 1.69, 95%CI: 1.0–2.8), haematuria (55.2%;OR = 2.37, 95%CI: 1.5–3.6), dysuria (52.1%;OR = 2.01, 95%CI: 1.3–3.1), undiagnosed syndromic STIs (5.4%), and orchitis (20.7%;OR = 1.81, 95%CI: 1.0–3.1). Clinical signs tended to cluster.Conclusions Urogenital clinical signs and symptoms are prevalent among male African long-term migrants with a positiveSchistosoma serology results. Genital involvement can be frequent even among those with long periods of non-residence in their sub-Saharan African countries of origin. Further research is needed to develop diagnostic tools and validate therapeutic approaches to chronic schistosomiasis.

The development of the scientific theory on the stability of vaulted structures was driven mainly during the 18th century based on applying the laws of Mechanics and the knowledge of the properties of materials.In the specific case of structures such as domes,the development of the theory is closely related to the theory of arches and vaults.Still,the main contributions are made in technical reports on the construction,stability,and repair of domes,such as the dome of Saint Peter’s in Rome and Sainte-Genevie`ve or Pantheon in Paris.This article,therefore,analyses the relationship between theory and practice and the development achieved in the specific subject of masonry domes during the 18th century from the point of view of the limit Analysis of Masonry Structures.In a more general sense,the objective of this research is to study in greater depth the theory of limit Analysis itself,that is,to learn from the work carried out in the 18th century by mathematicians,architects,and engineers,who,although unaware of the existence of the theoretical framework of limit Analysis as such,moved within it.

Spatial variability of soil organic carbon stock in an olive orchard at catchment scale in Southern Spain

Orchards have a high potential for carbon sequestration.However,little research is available on the spatial variability at catchment scale and on the difference between the tree area and the lanes.We analyzed theik spatial variability of soil organic carbon stock,SOCstock at 90 cm depth in an 8-ha catchment in Southern Spain with olives on a vertic soil.Results showed higher soil organic carbon concentration,SOC,in the tree area as compared to the lane up to 60 cm depth,but its impact on SOCstock was negligible since it was compensated by the higher soil bulk density in the lane.SOC at different depths was correlated with that in the top 0-5 cm.The overall SOCstock of the orchard was 4.14 kg m^(-2),ranging between 1.8 and 6.0 kg m^(-2).This SOCstock is in the mid-lower range of values reported for olive orchards,measured at smaller scale,and similar to those other intensive field crops and agroforestry under comparable rainfall conditions.The spatial variability in SOCstock was correlated to several geomorphological variables:elevation,cumulative upstream area,topographic wetness index,sediment transport index,and tillage erosion.Differences in SOC and SOCstock are driven by the sediment redis-tribution downslope,mainly by tillage erosion,and higher soil water availability in lower areas allowing higher biomass production.These topographic indexes and the correlation between SOC in the topsoil and SOCstock up to 90 cm should be further explored in other typology of olive orchards for facilitating the mapping of SOC_(stock).

From its commissioning in 2006 to the present,the Spanish Control Centre for Renewable Energies(CECRE)has been a worldwide pioneer and reference centre in the integration of renewable energies in the electrical system.In the last 15 years,CECRE has allowed a high penetration of renewable energies in Spanish electrical system by means of the supervision and control of renewable facilities,while ensuring the power supply security.This paper defines the bases of renewable en-ergy operation in CECRE and introduces forecasting systems for renewable energies.Furthermore,this paper describes the participation of renewable energies in balancing services and congestion management.Finally,new challenges for Spanish transmission system operator(TSO)are presented for the integration of renewable energies along with the energy transition and decarbonization.

The development of zeolites possessing dendritic features represents a great opportunity for the design of novel materials with applications in a large variety of fields and,in particular,in the energy sector to afford its transition towards a low carbon system.In the current work,ZSM-5 zeolite showing a dendritic3D nanoarchitecture has been synthesized by the functionalization of protozeolitic nanounits with an amphiphilic organosilane,which provokes the branched aggregative growth of zeolite embryos.Dendritic ZSM-5 exhibits outstanding accessibility arising from a highly interconnected network of radially-oriented mesopores(3-10 nm)and large cavities(20-80 nm),which add to the zeolitic micropores,thus showing a well-defined trimodal pore size distribution.These singular features provide dendritic ZSM-5 with sharply enhanced performance in comparison with nano-and hierarchical reference materials when tested in a number of energy related applications,such as VOCs(toluene)adsorption(improved capacity),plastics(low-density polyethylene)catalytic cracking(boosted activity)and hydrogen production by methane catalytic decomposition(higher activity and deactivation resistance).

Since late 2022, the share of infections caused by the SARS-CoV2 lineage XBB.1.5 has gradually increased in the United States,resulting in XBB.1.5 becoming the dominating SARS-CoV-2lineage in the United States and a similar trend is likely to soontake place also in European countries. However, information onthe virological properties of XBB.1.5 is scarce. Here, weconducted an initial virological assessment of the SARS-CoV-2XBB.1.5 lineage.

A simple methodology was developed to quantify penicillamine(PA) in pharmaceutical samples, using the selective interaction of the drug with Cu-modified graphene quantum dots(Cu-GQDs). The proposed strategy combines the advantages of carbon dots(over other nanoparticles) with the high affinity of PA for the proposed Cu-GQDs, resulting in a significant and selective quenching effect. Under the optimum conditions for the interaction, a linear response(in the 0.10–7.50 μmol/l PA concentration range) was observed. The highly fluorescent GQDs used were synthesized using uric acid as single precursor and then characterized by high resolution transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, fluorescence, and absorption spectroscopy. The proposed methodology could also be extended to other compounds, further expanding the applicability of GQDs.

p53 is the major tumor suppressor and the most frequently inactivated gene in cancer.p53 could be disabled either by mutations or by upstream negative regulators,including,but not limited to MDM2 and MDMX.p53 activity is required for the prevention as well as for the eradication of cancers.Restoration of p53 activity in mouse models leads to the suppression of established tumors of different origin.These findings provide a strong support to the anti-cancer strategy aimed for p53 reactivation.In this review,we summarize recent progress in the development of small molecules,which restore the tumor suppressor function of wild-type p53 and discuss their clinical advance.We discuss different aspects of p53-mediated response,which contribute to suppression of tumors,including non-canonical p53 activities,such as regulation of immune response.While targeting p53 inhibitors is a very promising approach,there are certain limitations and concerns that the intensive research and clinical evaluation of compounds will hopefully help to overcome.

This manuscript presents a questionnaire-based study aimed to provide a detailed analysis on the different soil management carried out by olive farmers in two representative olive-growing areas in southern Spain(Cordoba and Estepa),their perceptions on cover crop use and the possible influence of the different types of farms and farmers’typologies on these perceptions.Our results show a relatively large variability of soil management,with fourteen options,as a result of a combination of different alternatives for bare soil and cover crops with the use or not of pruning residues,but with a great similarity between both areas.The results indicate a high adoption of soil conservation measures in the two study areas,with 63%of farmers using cover crops and 80%a mulch of pruning residues,higher than that reported in previous studies in Southern Spain,and a trend of lower use of these techniques by less experienced and younger farmers.This high penetration of soil conservation measures resulted in a significant reduction of soil erosion risk,as indicated by the relatively low values for the cover and management factor(C)of RUSlE,also calculated and presented in this study,but also the possibility of focusing further efforts on fanners with less experience.Our results indicate the persistence of a minor,but relevant,percentage of farmers using bare soil management(37%)and no mulching(20%),with a moderate concern on the impact of soil erosion on soil degradation and provision of ecosystem services.This suggests the need to concentrate efforts also on this cluster of farmers to enhance the success of what seems to be a remarkable expansion of the use of soil conservation measures in recent decades in Southern Spain,but also in similar areas in the Mediterranean basin.
