A sedentary lifestyle and obesity are important risk factors for severe COVID-19 complications and death[1,2].Excessive adipose tissue(AT)might contribute to more extensive viral spread with increased shedding,immune activation,and cytokine amplification[3].Several factors secreted by contracting muscle,termed myokines,mediate the beneficial effects of exercise in a wide range of diseases,including obesity[4].Thus,we conducted a study to explore the potential role of myokines of the fibronectin type III domain-containing family,FNDC4 and FNDC5,in mechanisms underlying the increased susceptibility to COVID-19 complications in obesity.

Background Schistosomiasis is highly endemic in sub-Saharan Africa and frequently imported to Europe. Male urogenital manifestations are often neglected. We aimed to ascertain the prevalence of genitourinary clinical signs and symptoms among long-term African migrants in a non-endemic European country using a serology test.Methods We carried out a prospective, community-based cross-sectional study of adult male migrants from sub-Saharan Africa living in Spain.Schistosoma serology tests and microscopic urine examinations were carried out, and clinical data were obtained from an electronic medical record search and a structured questionnaire.Results We included 388 adult males, mean age 43.5 years [Standard Deviation (SD) = 12.0, range: 18–76]. The median time since migration to the European Union was 17 [Interquartile range (IQR): 11–21] years. The most frequent country of origin was Senegal (N = 179, 46.1%). Of the 338, 147 (37.6%) tested positive forSchistosoma. Parasite eggs were present in the urine of only 1.3%. Nine genitourinary clinical items were significantly associated with positiveSchistosoma serology results: pelvic pain (45.2%;OR = 1.57, 95%CI: 1.0–2.4), pain on ejaculation (14.5%;OR = 1.85, 95%CI: 1.0–3.5), dyspareunia (12.4%;OR = 2.45, 95%CI: 1.2–5.2), erectile dysfunction (9.5%;OR = 3.10, 95%CI: 1.3–7.6), self-reported episodes of infertility (32.1%;OR = 1.69, 95%CI: 1.0–2.8), haematuria (55.2%;OR = 2.37, 95%CI: 1.5–3.6), dysuria (52.1%;OR = 2.01, 95%CI: 1.3–3.1), undiagnosed syndromic STIs (5.4%), and orchitis (20.7%;OR = 1.81, 95%CI: 1.0–3.1). Clinical signs tended to cluster.Conclusions Urogenital clinical signs and symptoms are prevalent among male African long-term migrants with a positiveSchistosoma serology results. Genital involvement can be frequent even among those with long periods of non-residence in their sub-Saharan African countries of origin. Further research is needed to develop diagnostic tools and validate therapeutic approaches to chronic schistosomiasis.

The development of the scientific theory on the stability of vaulted structures was driven mainly during the 18th century based on applying the laws of Mechanics and the knowledge of the properties of materials.In the specific case of structures such as domes,the development of the theory is closely related to the theory of arches and vaults.Still,the main contributions are made in technical reports on the construction,stability,and repair of domes,such as the dome of Saint Peter’s in Rome and Sainte-Genevie`ve or Pantheon in Paris.This article,therefore,analyses the relationship between theory and practice and the development achieved in the specific subject of masonry domes during the 18th century from the point of view of the Limit Analysis of Masonry Structures.In a more general sense,the objective of this research is to study in greater depth the theory of Limit Analysis itself,that is,to learn from the work carried out in the 18th century by mathematicians,architects,and engineers,who,although unaware of the existence of the theoretical framework of Limit Analysis as such,moved within it.

Spatial variability of soil organic carbon stock in an olive orchard at catchment scale in Southern Spain

Orchards have a high potential for carbon sequestration.However,little research is available on the spatial variability at catchment scale and on the difference between the tree area and the lanes.We analyzed theik spatial variability of soil organic carbon stock,SOCstock at 90 cm depth in an 8-ha catchment in Southern Spain with olives on a vertic soil.Results showed higher soil organic carbon concentration,SOC,in the tree area as compared to the lane up to 60 cm depth,but its impact on SOCstock was negligible since it was compensated by the higher soil bulk density in the lane.SOC at different depths was correlated with that in the top 0-5 cm.The overall SOCstock of the orchard was 4.14 kg m^(-2),ranging between 1.8 and 6.0 kg m^(-2).This SOCstock is in the mid-lower range of values reported for olive orchards,measured at smaller scale,and similar to those other intensive field crops and agroforestry under comparable rainfall conditions.The spatial variability in SOCstock was correlated to several geomorphological variables:elevation,cumulative upstream area,topographic wetness index,sediment transport index,and tillage erosion.Differences in SOC and SOCstock are driven by the sediment redis-tribution downslope,mainly by tillage erosion,and higher soil water availability in lower areas allowing higher biomass production.These topographic indexes and the correlation between SOC in the topsoil and SOCstock up to 90 cm should be further explored in other typology of olive orchards for facilitating the mapping of SOC_(stock).

from its commissioning in 2006 to the present,the Spanish Control Centre for Renewable Energies(CECRE)has been a worldwide pioneer and reference centre in the integration of renewable energies in the electrical system.In the last 15 years,CECRE has allowed a high penetration of renewable energies in Spanish electrical system by means of the supervision and control of renewable facilities,while ensuring the power supply security.This paper defines the bases of renewable en-ergy operation in CECRE and introduces forecasting systems for renewable energies.Furthermore,this paper describes the participation of renewable energies in balancing services and congestion management.Finally,new challenges for Spanish transmission system operator(TSO)are presented for the integration of renewable energies along with the energy transition and decarbonization.

p53 is the major tumor suppressor and the most frequently inactivated gene in cancer.p53 could be disabled either by mutations or by upstream negative regulators,including,but not limited to MDM2 and MDMX.p53 activity is required for the prevention as well as for the eradication of cancers.Restoration of p53 activity in mouse models leads to the suppression of established tumors of different origin.These findings provide a strong support to the anti-cancer strategy aimed for p53 reactivation.In this review,we summarize recent progress in the development of small molecules,which restore the tumor suppressor function of wild-type p53 and discuss their clinical advance.We discuss different aspects of p53-mediated response,which contribute to suppression of tumors,including non-canonical p53 activities,such as regulation of immune response.While targeting p53 inhibitors is a very promising approach,there are certain limitations and concerns that the intensive research and clinical evaluation of compounds will hopefully help to overcome.

Retinitis pigmentosa(RP) is a group of inherited retinal disorders that lead to photoreceptor loss.RP has been reported to be related to oxidative stress,autophagy,and inflammation.(-)-Epigallocatechin gallate(EGCG),the most abundant catechin-based flavonoid in green tea leaves,has significant antioxidant,anti-carcinogenic,antimicrobial,and neuroprotective properties.EGCG,given its low molecular weight and hydrophilic properties,can cross the blood-retinal barrier and is able to reach different ocular tissues such as the lens,cornea,and retina.EGCG has been shown to provide retinal protection against ischemia;sodium nitroprusside-,N-methyl-D-aspartate-,lipopolysaccharide-,light-,sodium iodate-,or H2 O2-induced damage and diabetic retinopathy.This suggests that systemic EGCG administration has the potential to protect against retinal degenerative or neurodegenerative diseases such as RP.The aim of this work was to investigate whether EGCG can protect against RP progression in the animal P23 H line 1,the model of RP.Albino P23 H rats were crossed with pigmented Long Evans rats to produce offspring exhibiting the clinical features of RP.Pigmented P23 H rats were treated via intraperitoneal injection with saline or EGCG at a dose of 25 mg/kg every week from P100 to P160 and then compared to wild-type Long Evans rats.Rats treated with EGCG showed better visual and retinal electrical function with increased contrast sensitivity and b-wave values compared with those observed in P23 H rats treated with vehicle.EGCG reduced lipid peroxidation and increased total antioxidant capacity and catalase and superoxide dismutase activities.No differences were observed in visual acuity,nitrate levels,nitrite levels or glutathione S-transferase activity.In conclusion,EGCG not only reduced the loss of visual function in P23 H rats but also improved the levels of antioxidant enzymes and reduced oxidative damage.This study was approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee(CEICA) from the University of Zaragoza under proje

The development of zeolites possessing dendritic features represents a great opportunity for the design of novel materials with applications in a large variety of fields and,in particular,in the energy sector to afford its transition towards a low carbon system.In the current work,ZSM-5 zeolite showing a dendritic3D nanoarchitecture has been synthesized by the functionalization of protozeolitic nanounits with an amphiphilic organosilane,which provokes the branched aggregative growth of zeolite embryos.Dendritic ZSM-5 exhibits outstanding accessibility arising from a highly interconnected network of radially-oriented mesopores(3-10 nm)and large cavities(20-80 nm),which add to the zeolitic micropores,thus showing a well-defined trimodal pore size distribution.These singular features provide dendritic ZSM-5 with sharply enhanced performance in comparison with nano-and hierarchical reference materials when tested in a number of energy related applications,such as VOCs(toluene)adsorption(improved capacity),plastics(low-density polyethylene)catalytic cracking(boosted activity)and hydrogen production by methane catalytic decomposition(higher activity and deactivation resistance).

The FIFA World Cup^(TM) is the most profitable worldwide event.The FIFA publishes global statistics of this competition which provide global data about the players and teams during the competition.This work is focused on the extraction of behavioural patterns for both,players and teams strategies,through the automated analysis of this dataset.The knowledge and models extracted in this work could be applied to soccer leagues or even it could be oriented to sport betting.However,the main contribution is related to the study on several automatic knowledge extraction techniques,such as clustering methods,and how these techniques can be used to obtain useful behavioural models from a global statistics dataset.The information provided by the clustering algorithms shows similar properties which have been combined to define the models,making the human interpretation of these statistics easier.Finally,the most successful teams strategies have been analysed and compared.

Photouncaging of second messengers has been successfully employed to gain mechanistic insight of cellular signaling pathways. One of the most enigmatic processes of ion channel regulation is lipid recognition and lipid-gating of TRPC channels, which represents pivotal mechanisms of cellular Ca^(2+) homeostasis. Recently, optopharmacological tools including caged lipid mediators became available, enabling an unprecedented level of temporal and spatial control of the activating lipid species within a cellular environment. Here we tested a commonly used caged ligand approach for suitability to investigate TRPC signaling at the level of membrane conductance and cellular Ca^(2+) handling. We report a specific photouncaging artifact that is triggered by the cage structure coumarin at UV illumination. Electrophysiological characterization identified a light-dependent membrane effect of coumarin. UV light(340 nm) as used for photouncaging, initiated a membrane conductance specifically in the presence of coumarin as low as 30 μmol L^(-1) concentrations. This conductance masked the TRPC3 conductance evoked by photouncaging, while TRPC-mediated cellular Ca^(2+) responses were largely preserved. The observed light-induced membrane effects of the released caging moiety may well interfere with certain cellular functions, and prompt caution in using coumarin-caged second messengers in cellular studies.
