Growth hormone therapy for children with KBG syndrome:A case report and review of literature

BACKGROUND The incidence of short stature in KBG syndrome is relatively high.Data on the therapeutic effects of growth hormone(GH)on children with KBG syndrome accompanied by short stature in the previous literature has not been summarized.CASE SUMMARY Here we studied a girl with KBG syndrome and collected the data of children with KBG syndrome accompanied by short stature from previous studies before and after GH therapy.The girl was referred to our department because of short stature.Physical examination revealed mild dysmorphic features.The peak GH responses to arginine and clonidine were 6.22 and 5.40 ng/mL,respectively.The level of insulin-like growth factor 1(IGF-1)was 42.0 ng/mL.genetic analysis showed a c.2635 dupG(p.Glu879fs)mutation in the ANKRD11 gene.She received GH therapy.During the first year of GH therapy,her height increased by 0.92 standard deviation score(SDS).Her height increased from-1.95 SDS to-0.70 SDS after two years of GH therapy.There were ten children with KBG syndrome accompanied by short stature who received GH therapy in reported cases.Height SDS was improved in nine(9/10)of them.The mean height SDS in five children with KBG syndrome accompanied by short stature increased from-2.72±0.44 to-1.95±0.57 after the first year of GH therapy(P=0.001).There were no adverse reactions reported after GH treatment.CONCLUSION GH treatment is effective in our girl and most children with KBG syndrome accompanied by short stature during the first year of therapy.

In order to effectively utilize the resources and energy of molten steel slag,the variation of precipitation phase and specific heat of air quenched steel slag(AQSS)particles during continuous cooling process was investigated by FactSage and thermogravimetry differential scanning calorimetry.The cooling and solidification process of molten AQSS particles was simulated by Fluent.The microstructure changes in AQSS particles in solidification process were analyzed using an ultrahigh temperature laser confocal microscope and a scanning electron microscope.The results indicated that in the cooling process of molten AQSS particles,the precipitation of Ca_(2)Fe_(2)O_(5) resulted in the largest change of specific heat.Under the condition of slow cooling,the cooling rate is more obviously affected by specific heat.When the initial air velocity was 300 m s^(-1),there was the highest temperature difference in AQSS particles during cooling process.What is more,the compactness of the boundary region of AQSS particles was obviously better than that of its central region.

To address the problem of the weak anti-noise and macro-trend extraction abilities of the current methods for identifying radar antenna scan type,a recognition method for radar antenna scan types based on limited penetrable visibility graph(LPVG)is proposed.Firstly,seven types of radar antenna scans are analyzed,which include the circular scan,sector scan,helical scan,raster scan,conical scan,electromechanical hybrid scan and two-dimensional electronic scan.Then,the time series of the pulse amplitude in the radar reconnaissance receiver is converted into an LPVG network,and the feature parameters are extracted.Finally,the recognition result is obtained by using a support vector machine(SVM)classifier.The experimental results show that the recognition accuracy and noise resistance of this new method are improved,where the average recognition accuracy for radar antenna type is at least 90%when the signalto-noise ratio(SNR)is 5 dB and above.

Objective： To investigate potential prognostic factors affecting patient outcomes and to evaluate the optimal methods and effects of radiotherapy（RT） in the management of extramedullary plasmacytoma（EMP）.Methods： Data from 55 patients with EMP between November 1999 and August 2015 were collected. The median age was 51（range, 22–77） years. The median tumor size was 3.5（range, 1.0–15.0） cm. The median applied dose was 50.0（range, 30.0–70.0） Gy. Thirty-nine patients（70.9%） presented with disease in the head or neck region. Twelve patients received RT alone, 9 received surgery（S） alone, 3 received chemotherapy（CT） alone, and 3 patients did not receive any treatment. Combination therapies were applied in 28 patients.Results：The median follow-up duration was 56 months.The 5-year local recurrence-free survival（LRFS）,multiple myeloma-free survival（MMFS）,progression-free survival（PFS）and overall survival（OS）rates were 79.8%,78.6%,65.2% and 76.0%,respectively.Univariate analysis revealed that RT was a favourable factor for all examined endpoints.Furthermore,head and neck EMPs were associated with superior LRFS,MMFS and PFS.Tumor size〈4 cm was associated with superior MMFS,PFS and OS;serum M protein negativity was associated with superior MMFS and PFS;age≥50 years and local recurrence were associated with poor MMFS.The dose≥45 Gy group exhibited superior 5-year LRFS,MMFS and PFS rates（94.7%,94.4%,90.0%,respectively）,while the corresponding values for the dose〈45 Gy group were 62.5%（P=0.008）,53.3%（P=0.036）and 41.7%（P〈0.001）.Conclusions：Involved-site RT of at least 45 Gy should be considered for EMP.Furthermore,patients with head and neck EMP,tumor size〈4 cm,age〈50 years and serum M protein negativity had better outcomes.

The hemodynamic characteristics of venous reflux are associated with infertility in patients with varicocele;however,an effective method for quantifying the structural distribution of the reflux is lacking.This study aimed to predict surgical outcomes using a new software for venous reflux quantification.This was a retrospective cohort study of a consecutive series of 105 patients(age range:22–44 years)between July 2017 and September 2019.Venous reflux of the varicocele was obtained using the Valsalva maneuver during scrotal Doppler ultrasonography before microsurgical varicocelectomy.Using this software,the colored reflux signals were segmented,and the gray scale of the color pixels representing the reflux velocity was comprehensively quantified into the mean reflux velocity of the green layer(MRVG)and the reflux velocity standard deviation of the green layer(RVSDG).Spontaneous pregnancy and changes from baseline in the semen parameters were assessed during a 12-month follow-up period.Data were analyzed using logistic regression analysis.An association of the high MRVG group with impaired progressive motility(odds ratio[OR]=2.868,95%confidence interval[CI]:1.133–7.265)and impaired sperm concentration(OR=2.943,95%CI:1.196–7.239)was found during multivariate analysis.High MRVG(OR=2.680,95%CI:1.086–6.614)and high RVSDG(OR=2.508,95%CI:1.030–6.111)were found to be independent predictors of failure to achieve pregnancy following microsurgical repair.In summary,intense venous reflux is an independent predictor of impaired progressive motility,sperm concentration,and pregnancy outcomes after microsurgical varicocelectomy.

In this paper,we propose a novel approach to visualizing global geographical information:a panoramic sphere in an immersive environment.The whole geographical surface can be observed through the rotating of heads as the viewpoint of the panoramic sphere is inside the sphere.We compared three approaches to visualizing the earth for rendering the geographical information in a virtual reality environment.On the tasks of terrestrial and marine geographical information,we compare the visualization effects on a)a globe,b)a flat map and c)a panoramic sphere.Terrestrial geographical information tasks include the area comparison and direction determination.Marine geographical information tasks contain the visualization of sea surface temperature and sea surface currents.For terrestrial geographical information tasks,the experimental results show that the panoramic sphere outperforms the globe and the flat map,with a higher average accuracy and a shorter time.On marine geographical information task,the panoramic sphere visualization is also superior to the flat map and the globe in an immersive environment for the sea surface temperature data and the sea surface current fields.In all three visualization experiments,the panoramic sphere is most preferred by the participants,particularly for global,transcontinental and transoceanic needs.

BACKGROUND Oral-facial-digital syndrome type 1(OFD1) is a rare ciliopathy mainly with an Xlinked dominant pattern of inheritance, which is caused by mutations in the OFD1 gene. The OFD1 protein is located within the centrosomes and basal bodies of the primary cilia. It is reported that approximately 15%–50% cases of OFD1 progress to end-stage renal disease(ESRD) following development of polycystic kidney diseases(PKD). Here we report a pair of childhood male twins who presented only renal failure and PKD caused by an OFD1 mutation in China.CASE SUMMARY A pair of 14-year male twins were hospitalized with a complaint of abnormal renal function for nine days. They both complained of ankle pain for 3 mo vs 2 wk, respectively. They denied fever, abdominal pain, daytime or nighttime enuresis, urgency, dysuria, or gross hematuria. Laboratory tests at a local hospital showed renal failure(serum creatinine 485 μmol/L vs 442 μmol/L, blood urea nitrogen 14.7 mol/L vs 14.5 mol/L) and anemia(hemoglobin 88 g/L vs 98 g/L).The twins are monozygotic. There was no abnormal birth, past medical, or family history. Clinical data were analyzed and genetic analysis on PKD was carried out in the twins by next-generation sequencing. The results showed that the twins presented low-molecular-weight proteinuria, hyposthenuria, anemia, renal failure, and renal polycystic changes. genetic tests showed that the twins both carried a hemizygous mutation in exon 19 c.2524 G>A(p. G842 R) of the OFD1 gene. Their mother heterozygously carried the same mutation as the twins but was without any phenotypes while their father was normal.CONCLUSION We have reported a pair of childhood male twins with an OFD1 mutation who presented ESRD and PKD but without any other phenotypes of OFD1 in China.

Phytolith study is a new branch of micropaleontology with an increasingly important role in geology, archaeology,and plant taxonomy. Phytoliths have several advantages considering their characteristics of small particle size, high production,wide distribution, anti-decomposition, in situ deposition, distinctive morphologies, and element sequestrating capacity. Phytolith assemblages in modern soil have been found to be closely related to modern vegetation types and climate conditions, which forms the basis for the quantitative study of paleoecology, paleoclimate, and bio-geochemical cycles. At present, phytolith studies generally focus on the following four aspects:(1) Morphology: about 260 unduplicated types of phytoliths have been identified in modern soil, of which 110 types are from grasses, 50 types from ferns, woody plants and other angiosperms,whereas the origin plants of the remaining 100 types are still under investigation.(2) Soil phytolith assemblages and vegetation:phytolith assemblages from the topsoil have been used to distinguish surface vegetation types including different forests and grasslands over a typical region. This model has been applied to restore past vegetation conditions and monitor the dynamic evolution of specific vegetation types at different temporal and spatial scales.(3) Soil phytolith assemblages and climate:quantitative and semi-quantitative relationships between phytolith assemblages and a series of climate parameters, such as annual mean temperature, annual mean precipitation and altitude, have been established through mathematical analysis. In this manner, quantitative reconstruction of paleoclimatic parameters has been achieved through the phytolith-climate transfer function model.(4) Soil phytolith and its sequestered elements: in this topic, the content of soil Phyt OC(Phytolith-occluded Organic Carbon) and the importance of Phyt OC in the bio-geochemical cycle have been the focus. Deep learning has achieved great success in a variety of research fields and industrial applications.However,when applied to seismic inversion,the shortage of labeled data severely influences the performance of deep learning-based methods.In order to tackle this problem,we propose a novel seismic impedance inversion method based on a cycle-consistent generative adversarial network(Cycle-GAN).The proposed Cycle-GAN model includes two generative subnets and two discriminative subnets.Three kinds of loss,including cycle-consistent loss,adversarial loss,and estimation loss,are adopted to guide the training process.Benefit from the proposed structure,the information contained in unlabeled data can be extracted,and adversarial learning further guarantees that the prediction results share similar distributions with the real data.Moreover,a neural network visualization method is adopted to show that the proposed CNN model can learn more distinguishable features than the conventional CNN model.The robustness experiments on synthetic data sets show that the proposed method can achieve better performances than other methods in most cases.And the blind-well experiments on real seismic profiles show that the predicted impedance curve of the proposed method maintains a better correlation with the true impedance curve.
