Parameters Influencing Haemato.o.ical, Serum and Bio.Chemical References in Livesto.k Animals under Different Management Systems

Serum bio.chemical and haemato.o.ical indices co.stitute impo.tant panels in the diagno.is, pro.no.is and treatment o. livesto.k diseases via the investigatio.s o. myriads o. parameters influencing these blo.d and serum bio.chemical indices. Serum bio.chemical indices, haemato.o.ical indices and blo.d electro.ytes are critical physio.o.ical indices which have health implicatio.s o. the diagno.is, pro.no.is and treatment o. livesto.k diseases especially in animals bred under different management systems. It is impo.tant to.stress that cascades o. parameters o. bo.h genetic and no.-genetic o.igin greatly have direct and in-direct health implicatio.s o. serum bio.chemical indices and blo.d electro.ytes in livesto.k animals and subsequently o. their health/ pro.uctio. perfo.mances. Labo.ato.y blo.d tests wo.ld be a vital to.l to.help detect any deviatio. fro. no.mal state o. wellbeing in animals. Therefo.e, this review intends to.pro.ide base line info.matio. to.establish certain haemato.o.ical and serum bio.chemical indices as standard references which can be emplo.ed as alternative therapy fo. diagno.is, pro.no.is and treatment o. cascades o. diseases plaguing livesto.k animals bred under different management systems especially under the harsh co.ditio. o. the tro.ics. Hence, it is impo.tant to.establish standard values fo. the vario.s blo.d and serum bio.chemical indices base o. parameters o. no.-genetic o.igin;age, sex, physio.o.ical state, stress level, management systems, medicatio., health status, nutritio., ho.mo.e, climate, etc. and genetic parameters which include the breed and geno.ype o. the animal amo.g o.hers o.vio.sly affect the blo.d and serum pro.ile o. healthy animal which subsequently influence their pro.uctio. perfo.mance and efficiency.

Trypano.o.o.is remains a majo. challenge to.livesto.k pro.uctio. in much o. tro.ical Sub-Saharan Africa, while diagno.is and treatment still depend o. inefficient parasito.o.ical techniques. Endemic infectio.s depend o. animal reservo.rs with subclinical parasitemia. We repo.t mo.ecular diagno.is o. subclinical Trypano.o.a vivax (T. vivax) infectio. using po.ymerase chain reactio. (PCR) fo. the first time in Nigerian go.ts and asso.iate parasite presence with gro.s physio.o.ical traits and serum metabo.ites in extensively managed Nigerian go.ts. PCR was used to.amplify a 400 bp DNA fragment o. the parasite geno.e in 205 go.ts acro.s three geo.raphical zo.es o. the co.ntry. Results sho.ed a high subclinical infectio. rate (SCIR) o. 71.7% in the to.al go.ts examined. o.erall SCIRs o. 71%, 75.9% and 55.6% were reco.ded in West African Dwarf, Red So.o.o.and Sahel go.ts respectively, while geo.raphical SCIRs were 71.2% (So.thwest), 75% (No.thwest) and 70% (No.theast). T. vivax presence had significant (P 0.05) effect o. respirato.y rate and is asso.iated with higher creatinine levels in sera. Lo.istic regressio. analyses with Ho.mer-Lemesho. go.dness-o.-fit sho.ed that respirato.y rate is the mo.t impo.tant predictive trait fo. the presence o. T. vivax infectio. (P 0.05). Go.ts appear to.be a viable reservo.r fo. T. vivax infectio. o. o.her livesto.k. Mo.ecular diagno.is o. subclinical trypano.o.o.is using PCR co.ld be useful fo. large scale epidemio.o.ical studies, early diagno.is o. subclinical infectio. and treatment o. the disease in extensively managed tro.ical go.ts.

Backgro.nd： Sheep is impo.tant in the so.io.eco.o.ic lives o. peo.le aro.nd the wo.ld. It is estimated that mo.e than half o. o.r o.ce co.mo. livesto.k breeds are no. endangered. Since genetic characterizatio. o. Nigerian sheep is still lacking, we analyzed ten mo.pho.o.ical traits o. 402 animals and 15 micro.atellite DNA markers in 384 animals o. the 4 Nigerian sheep breeds to.better understand genetic diversity fo. breeding management and germplasm co.servatio.. Results： Mo.pho.o.ical traits o. Uda and Balami were significantly （P 〈 0.05） higher than Yankasa, which were bo.h higher than West African Dwarf （WAD） sheep. Stepwise discriminant analysis sho.ed tail length, rump height, chest girth, ear length and chest depth as the mo.t discriminating variables fo. classificatio.. Mahalano.is distances sho. the least differentiatio. between Uda and Balami and the largest between WAD and Balami sheep. While 93.3% o. WAD sheep were co.rectly assigned to.their so.rce genetic gro.p, 63.9% o. Yankasa, 61.2% o. Balami and 45.2% o. Uda were classified co.rectly by nearest neighbo.r discriminant analysis. The o.erall high Po.ymo.phism Info.matio. Co.tent （PIC） o. all micro.atellite markers ranged fro. 0.751 to.0.927 suppo.ting their use in genetic characterizatio.. Expected hetero.ygo.ity was high fo. all lo.i （0.783 to.0.93）. Mean hetero.ygo.e deficiency acro.s all po.ulatio.s （0.17] to.0.534） po.sibly indicate significant inbreeding （P 〈 0.05）. Mean values fo. FST, FIT and F^s statistics acro.s all lo.i were 0.088, 0.394 and 0.336 respectively. Yankasa and Balami are the mo.t clo.ely related breeds （DA = 0.184） while WAD and Balami are the farthest apart breeds （DA-- 0.665）, which is co.ncident with distance based o. mo.pho.o.ical analysis and po.ulatio. structure assessed by STRUCTURE.
