Purpose: special nutrients have an impact on common cold infections. In this trial we have investigated the effectiveness of the specific amino acid composition “aminoplus? immun” on the occurrence, duration and severity of common cold. Material and Methods: Our study is a controlled, randomised completely masked trial comparing genuine trial remedy versus placebo in parallel groups. Eligible subjects were people with recurrent and chronic infections of the ear, nose and pharyngeal area. The treatment period was 90 days. The primary outcome was the mean number of days that the patients had symptoms of infections. Results: From Oct. 2009 to Feb. 2010 a total of 145 patients were recruited, of whom 119 had no major protocol violation and were valid for assessment. Two thirds of the patients were female. The mean age of the patients was 45 years. 65% of participants had come into contact with many people and thereby an increased risk of infection. On average the patients had 11.1 infections during the 12 months before the study. Compliance for the intake of the study preparation was 98.9%. Due to randomisation, the groups were very similar and balanced. The primary and all 6 secondary outcome variables showed a clear superiority of the investigated amino acid composition over placebo (p Conclusion: The specific composition “aminoplus? immun is effective in preventing recurrent and chronic infections of the ear, nose and upper respiratory tract.

Laser-driven ion sources are a rapidly developing technology producing high energy,high peak current *** suitability for applications,such as compact medical accelerators,motivates development of robust acceleration schemes using widely available repetitive ultraintense femtosecond *** applications not only require high beam energy,but also place demanding requirements on the source stability and *** can be seriously affected by the laser temporal contrast,precluding the replication of ion acceleration performance on independent laser systems with otherwise similar ***,we present the experimental generation of>60 MeV protons and>30 MeV u-1 carbon ions from sub-micrometre thickness Formvar foils irradiated with laser intensities>1021 *** are accelerated by an extreme localised space charge field≥30TVm-1,over a million times higher than used in conventional *** field is formed by a rapid expulsion of electrons from the target bulk due to relativistically induced transparency,in which relativistic corrections to the refractive index enables laser transmission through normally opaque *** replicate the mechanism on two different laser facilities and show that the optimum target thickness decreases with improved laser contrast due to reduced *** demonstration that energetic ions can be accelerated by this mechanism at different contrast levels relaxes laser requirements and indicates interaction parameters for realising application-specific beam delivery.

Rarely,scientific developments centered around the patient as a whole *** multidisciplinary group,headed by gastrointestinal surgeons,applied this research philosophy considering the most important aspects of thediseases“colon-and rectal cancer”in the long-term *** expertcooperation/knowledge at the Comprehensive Cancer Center Ulm(CCCU)wereapplied in several phase III trials for multimodal treatments of primary tumors(MMT)and metastatic diseases(involving nearly 2000 patients and 64 centers),fortreatment individualization of MMT and of metastatic disease,for psychooncology/quality of life involving the patients’wishes,and for disease *** of the targets initially were heavily rejected/discussed in thescientific communities,but now have become standards in treatments andnational guidelines or are topics in modern translational research protocolsinvolving molecular biology for e.g.,“patient centered individualized treatment”.In this context we also describe the paths we had to tread in order to realize ournew goals,which at the end were highly beneficial for the patients from manypoints of *** description is also important for students and youngresearchers who,with an actual view on our recent developments,might want toknow how medical progress was achieved.

The LIVE (Late In-Vessel Phase Experiments) test program investigates in-vessel melt pool behaviour and cooling strategies for in-vessel corium retention during severe accidents in light water reactors (LWR). The main part of the LIVE facility is a 1:5 scaled semi-spherical lower head of a typical pressurized water reactor. Up to now, LIVE experiments have been performed in different initial external cooling conditions, melt volumes and internal heat generations. At present the well-known simulant material KNO3-NaNO3 in non-eutectic composition (80 mole% KNO3-20 mole% NaNO3) and in eutectic composition (50 mole% KNO3 - 50 mole% NaNO3) is used in the live program. The 3D heat flux distribution through vessel wall, melt pool temperature, crust thickness and the pool melt composition can be measured or determined. Extensive results have been obtained concerning the melt pool thermal hydraulic behaviour in transient and in steady state conditions.
