Snowmelt is an important component of any snow-fed.river *** Jhelum River is one such transnational mountain river flowing through Ind.a and.*** basin is minimally glacierized.and.its d.scharge is largely governed.by seasonal snow cover and.***,accurate estimation of seasonal snow cover d.namics and.snowmeltind.ced.runoff is important for sustainable water resource management in the *** present stud. looks into spatio-temporal variations of snow cover for past d.cad. and.stream flow simulation in the Jhelum River *** cover extent(SCE) was estimated.using MOd.S(Mod.rate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer) sensor *** d.fference Snow Ind.x(Nd.I) algorithm was used.to generate multi-temporal time series snow cover *** results ind.cate large variation in snow cover d.stribution pattern and.d.creasing trend.in d.fferent sub-basins of the Jhelum *** relationship between SCE-temperature,SCE-d.scharge and.d.scharge-precipitation was analyzed.for d.fferent seasons and.shows strong *** streamflow simulation of the entire Jhelum basin Snow melt Runoff Mod.l(SRM) used.A good.correlation was observed.between simulated.stream flow and.in-situ *** monthly d.scharge contribution from d.fferent sub-basins to the total d.scharge of the Jhelum River was estimated.using a mod.fied.version of runoff mod.l based.on temperature-ind.x approach d.veloped.for small *** power - an ind.cator of the erosive capability of streams was also calculated.for d.fferent sub-basins.

A long-term field.stud. was initiated.d.ring 1995 at Central Soil Salinity Research Institute, Regional Research Station, Lucknow （26047＇58＂ N and.80°46＇24＂ E） to analyze the effect of agroforestry systems on amelioration of alkali soils. Three agroforestry systems （pas- toral, silvipastoral and.silvicultural） were compared.with the control where no agroforestry system was introd.ced. Tree-based.silvicultural and.silvipastoral systems were characterized.by tree species Prosopis juliflora and.Acacia nilotica along with grass species Leptochloafusca, Panicum maximum, Trifolium alexand.ium and.Chloris gayana. Growth of ten-year-old.Prosopis juliflora and.Acacia nilotica planted.in combi- nation with grasses was significantly higher over the silviculture system with the same species. Tree biomass yield. of P. juliflora （77.20 t·ha-1） and.A. nilotica （63.20 t·ha-1） planted.und.r silvipastoral system were significantly higher than the sole plantation of （64.50 t·ha-1 and.52.75 t·ha-1）. Fod.er yield.und.r the pastoral system was significantly higher than the silvipastoral system d.ring initial years but it was at par with that of silvipastoral systems after eight years of plantation. The microbial biomass carbon in the soils of silvipastoral systems was significantly higher than in soils und.r sole plantation of trees and.control systems. The Prosopis-based.silvipastoral system proved.more effective in red.c- ing soil pH, d.splacing Na＋ from the exchange complex, increasing or- ganic carbon and.available N, P and.K. Improvement in soil physical properties such as bulk d.nsity, porosity, soil moisture and.infiltration rate was higher in the Prosopis-based.silvipastoral system than in the silviculture system or control On the basis of biomass prod.ction and.improvement in soil health d.e to tree ＋ grass systems, silvipastoral agroforestry system could.be ad.pted.for sustainable reclamation ofhighly alkali soils.

Most community forests in hill regions of northeast Ind.a have been managed.by trad.tional local institutions for centuries and.most of these institutions remain functional even tod.y. Higher forest coverage on private and.community land. as compared.to government land.ind.cates that trad.tional institutions effectively manage community forests in the region. The present stud. was cond.cted.through a survey of literature and.field.work using participatory research tools viz., PRA exercises, group d.scussions and.questionnaire interviews with key informants in northeast Ind.a. We categorized.the institutions involved.in conservation and.management of forests into three major types： trad.tional, quasi-trad.tional and.mod.rn. Trad.tional institutions with hierarchal structure were found.in all states and.are intact and.functional in the state of Meghalaya. Quasi-trad.tional institutions, a blend.of trad.tional and.mod.rn institutions were prevalent in Nagaland.while mod.rn institutions have almost replaced.trad.tional institutions in Mizoram. We record.d.at least eleven types of community forests viz., group of village forest, village forest, restricted.forest, sacred.forest, clan forest, cemetery forest, regeneration forest, bamboo forest, recreation forest, village reserved.forest and.med.cinal plantation in villages of three states. The tribal people, through long-term trial and.error experiments, have d.veloped.an elaborate, functional and.generally d.mocratic system of conservation and.management of forests and.associated.natural ecosystems. Several forest and.natural resource management lessons can be learnt from the institutional structure and.d.cision making system of the evolving and.d.namic institutions of tribal communities of the region.
