The present study indicates the status of metal contamination in the vegetables/crops grown in the upper most Ganga-Yamuna doab region of India and associated health risk. Commonly grown vegetables and crops were sampled and analyzed for the metal contamination. Maximum concentration (mg/kg) of Cd and Cr, was observed in Radish (7.6) and Cabbage (56.24) respectively, whereas maximum concentration of Pb, Ni and Zn was observed in the edible parts of Mustard plant (95.4, 58.6, 756.43 respectively). Bio-concentration factor (BCF) value indicated the transfer level of metal from soil to crop;indicated high transfer value of Cd in Radish followed by cabbage and spinach. Considerably high BCF value was observed in the Mustard (8.13), Cabbage (4.18) and radish (3.07) for Zn contamination. Estimated daily intake (EDI) and Hazard quotient (HQ) or Non-carcinogenic health risk was calculated using the USEPA method. The result revealed that the metal intake and associated health risk were considerably high in the children population in comparison to the adult population.

Localization is the basic requirement for network management in Wireless Sensor Networks as it helps nodes find their absolute position coordinates and in gathering information relevant to their locations. A localization algorithm has to be dynamic, scalable and should not impose high computation or communication overhead. The localization systems are also prone to attacks. We target a localization scheme for mobile sensor networks called Monte-Carlo Localization, which study its behavior under the most dangerous attack on localization called Wormhole Attack, also known as Collusion Attack and propose a modified algorithm that can help the localization system retain its accuracy level even in the presence of attacks. Our algorithm has communication cost almost equal to that of original localization algorithm (in this case MCL) in the absence of attacks.

Stage III and IV Head and Neck Cancer: Does Everyone Need Chemotherapy?

Time delays are an integral part of various physiological processes. In this paper, we analyse two models for physiological systems: the Mackey-Glass and Lasota equations. We first exhibit a sufficient condition to ensure local stability, and then outline the associated necessary and sufficient condition for stability. Using a non-dimensional bifurcation parameter, we then highlight that stability will be lost via a Hopf bifurcation. We also explicitly characterise the type of the Hopf bifurcation using Poincar′e normal forms and the center manifold theory. The theoretical analysis is complemented with some numerical examples, stability charts and bifurcation diagrams.

Objectives: Definitive treatment of Stage III and IV squamous cell carcinoma can be with surgical resection, definitive radiation therapy alone or combined radiation therapy with chemotherapy. Radiation and concomitant platinum-based chemotherapy are the accepted gold standard. The purpose of this study was to determine how often patients treated with radiation therapy alone developed locoregionally recurrent disease that in retrospect possibly could have been prevented with the addition of chemotherapy. Methods: 116 consecutive patients with known Stage III and Stage IV head and neck cancers were treated with curative intent with radiation therapy alone. Results of the treatment were retrospectively reviewed. Results: Of the 116 patients treated with radiation alone, 11 (9.48%) died from locally recurrent disease, 6 (5.17%) died from local disease and were never disease-free, 7 (6.03%) died from metastatic disease, 9 (7.75%) died from disease NOS, 6 (5.17%) died from secondary malignancy, 10 (8.62%) died from ICD (2 oropharynx;8 larynx), 6 (5.17%) died from uncertain causes, 51 (43.96%) are alive and disease-free, and 10 (8.62%) patients’ final outcome data were not recoverable. Conclusions: Cure rates in selected patients with advanced head and neck cancer may be similar with radiation alone compared to radiation with the addition of chemotherapy.

Pongamia Pinnata trees are normally planted along the highways, roads, canals to stop soil erosion. Billions of trees exist all over India. If the seeds fallen along road side are collected, and oil is extracted at village level expellers, few million tons of oil will be available for Lighting the Lamps in rural area. It is the best substitute for Kerosene. Since these are spread over a large area, collection of seeds for Biodiesel manufacture is not viable. (A compact plantation can support a Biodiesel plant. The seedlings of Pongamia can survive in 1.5 meters deep water submergence / inunda-tion for five to six months duration at a stretch. There are nearly 30,000 square km of water reservoirs in India. This tree can be cultivated in our water storage reservoirs up to 1.5 meters depth and reap additional economic value from unused reservoir lands. The estimated annual production of oil from its seeds is about 50,000 t. The oil has not yet found any significant commercial application. But due to increase in awareness and growth in research in this area the Pongamia it can be developed as the alternative source of fuel by replacing diesel. In the present study attempt has been made to study the scope of Pongamia in India.

The analysis of TCP, along with queue management policies, forms an important aspect of performance evaluation for the Internet. In this paper, we analyse a non-linear fluid model for Compound TCP（C-TCP） coupled with an Exponential-RED（E-RED） queue management policy. Compound is an important flavor of TCP, as it is the default transport protocol in the Windows operating system. For the bifurcation analysis, we motivate an exogenous and non-dimensional bifurcation parameter. Using this parameter, we first derive the Hopf bifurcation condition for the underlying model. Then, employing Poincar′e normal forms and the center manifold theory, we outline the analysis to characterise the type of the Hopf bifurcation, and determine the stability of the bifurcating periodic solutions. Some numerical analysis and stability charts complement our theoretical analysis.

Diapause is commonly confused with term ＂quiescence＂ as both are dormant development stages. Here this paper aimed to review the research work done on different aspects of diapause. Attempt was made to explain definitions of diapause, incidence, stages and termination of diapause, genetic control, factors affecting diapauses, including temperature, photoperiod, moisture and food, etc..

Background Numerous studies have investigated the effect of angiotensin converting enzyme （ACE） gene I/D polymorphism and various cardiovascular risk factors in different populations with varied results. Currently, the association of ACE gene polymorphism with metabolic syndrome has not been studied in North Indians. While studies assessing the effect with polymorphism on each of the components of metabolic syndrome separately are present, data regarding the metabolic syndrome per se are sparse. The present study evaluated the effect of ACE gene I/D polymorphism in patients with metabolic syndrome in North Indian population at a tertiary care centre. Methods Fifty subjects, with thirty cases of metabolic syndrome （NCEP/ATP III guidelines, 2004） and twenty age and gender matched healthy controls were chosen. Detailed history was reviewed and clinical examination of the subjects was carried out. Relevant investigations including blood glucose （fasting and post prandial）, blood urea, serum creatinine and serum lipids were done. DNA of cases and controls was analysed for I/D polymorphism using polymerase chain reaction. Results D/D genotype was more frequent in patients with metabolic syndrome as compared with healthy controls （P 〈0.05）. Systolic blood pressure （SBP） and diastolic blood pressure （DBP） was significantly higher in the D/D genotype than I/D and I/I genotypes （P 〈0.05）. Our study also showed positive association between obesity, fasting blood glucose and ACE gene polymorphism while no association was found with triglycerides and high density lipoprotein cholesterol. The I/I group was significantly associated with waist circumference and fasting blood glucose （P 〈0.05）. Conclusion Our study clearly showed that metabolic syndrome was associated with ACE gene polymorphism. However due to less number of subjects in the study further studies are needed to corroborate our results.
