Baled timothy hay underwent testing at a hay processing plant in Canada to determine if mechanical compression(rebaling)could be used as a disinfestation protocol for Hessian fly(mayetiola destructor(Say))*** sensitive films were randomly placed throughout the hay material,on the chamber walls,and in different orientations,to assess the hay compaction unit’s ability to induce the required pressure to crash a Hessian fly puparium in the *** to the pressure films were organdy cages containing wheat seedlings infested with Hessian fly *** variables which were tested included the hold time(0.5 and 2.0 s),applied pressure(10.34 and 12.41 mPa),and timothy hay quality(low-moisture first cut,high-moisture first cut and high-moisture second cut hay).A total of 36 tests were *** each test,10 Hessian fly cages and 10 pressure sensitive films were *** test cage contained approximately 168.56 Hessian fly puparia,translating into a total Hessian fly count of 60681 for the entire field *** of the pressure sensitive films showed that 100%of the hay experienced at least 200 kPa(29 psi)of *** the 75-day post experiment emergence period,0.0066%of the puparia survived,which may be due to the fact that the emerged puparia might have not been crushed and not subjected to a pressure of at least 20.6 *** applied pressures affected Hessian fly emergence by considerably reducing the number of puparia that ***,Hessian fly emerged from one of the cages in two *** of the Hessian fly puparia were destroyed irrespective of the applied pressure,hold time or hay quality.

A new record of Cleantioides emarginata Kwon & Kim, 1992 (Crustacea, Isopoda, Valvifera) from Changjiang River estuary, China

At present, descriptions of Cleantioides emarginata Kwon & Kim, 1992 have been limited to the type locality of Pusan, Korea. In this study, we discovered this species in the Changjiang (Yangtze) River estuary, China. This represents an extension of the known geographical range of C. emarginata. In addition, we present information of a colour pattern not previously described, along with details on the estuarine habitat of the species.

Testicular volume and clinical correlates of hypothalamic–pituitary–testicular function:A cross-sectional study in obese men

The aim of this study was to determine whether testicular volume is correlated with clinical and biochemical markers of hypothalamic–pituitary–testicular(HPT)axis *** was a cross-sectional substudy of a larger randomized controlled trial including obese men,body mass index(BmI)≥30 kg m−2,with a total testosterone levelmol l−*** volume was measured by orchidometer,testosterone by liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry,and body composition by dual-energy X-ray *** completed the Aging males'Symptoms(AmS)score,International Index of Erectile Function-5(IIEF-5),physical function,and handgrip dynamometer ***-nine men participated with a median(interquartile range[IQR])age of 53.1(47.6,59.2)years,BmI of 37.0(34.6,40.5)kg m−2,and a total testosterone of 7.0(6.1,7.9)nmol l−*** testicular volume was 18(IQR:10,20)*** volume was negatively correlated with BmI(τ=−0.1952,P=0.010)and total fat mass(τ=−0.2115,P=0.005)independent of age and *** BmI,testosterone,sex hormone-binding globulin(SHBG),and luteinizing hormone(LH)were present in a multivariable model,only BmI(-0.38 ml change in testicular volume per 1 kg m-2BmI;95%CI:−0.74,−0.02;P=0.04)and LH(-0.92 ml change in testicular volume per 1 IU l-1 LH;95%CI:−1.75,−0.095;P=0.03)remained independent significant predictors of testicular *** volume was positively correlated with IIEF-5(τ=0.2092,P=0.021),but not related to handgrip strength,physical function tests,or *** obese men,testicular volume is inversely and independently associated with measures of adiposity,but not with most clinical or biochemical markers of HPT axis *** a clinical perspective,this suggests that obesity might compromise the reliability of reduced testicular volume as a sign of androgen deficiency in men.

SUBSURFACE TEmPERATURE AND ITS RELATION TO DYNAmIC HEIGHT AT 130°E ACROSS THENORTH EQUATORIAL CURRENT

Temperature profiles down to 1500m(CTD) collected by Academia Sinica from 1986 to 1990 are used and discussed in relation to the dynamic heights at130 E across the North Equatorial Current (NEC). An extremely high correlation between subsurface (say at 400 m depth) temperature and dynamic height relative to 1500 db is found, and the corresponding regression relationships suggest a method to estimate gpostrophic circulation from subsurface temperature alone. These suggest that the conclusions from extensive studies on this topic in Australian waters also apply to the NEC region, at least at130 E , thus making the subsurface thermal structure an excellent indicator of the variation of the NEC.

A photothermal reservoir for highly efficient solar steam generation without bulk water

A solid photothermal reservoir is designed to implement solar-steam generation in the absence of bulk *** photothermal reservoir is composed of a water absorbing core encapsulated by a photothermal reduced graphene oxide based aerogel sheet which absorbs light and converts it into heat thus evaporating the stored *** photothermal reservoir is able to store 6.5 times its own weight in water,which is sufficient for one day solar evaporation,thus no external water supplement is *** solar-steam generation,since no bulk water is involved,the photothermal reservoir minimizes heat conduction loss,and maximizes both of the exposed evaporation surface area and net energy gain from the environment,leading to an energy efficiency beyond the theoretical *** extremely high water evaporation rate of 4.0 kg m-2 h-1(normalized to projection area)is achieved in laboratory studies over a cylinder photothermal reservoir with a diameter of 5.2 cm and a height of 15 cm under 1.0 sun *** evaluation of the photothermal reservoir outdoors as part of a desalination device demonstrates a similar evaporation rate where the salinity of the clean water produced is lower than 24 *** the photothermal reservoir shows great potential for real world applications in portable solarthermal desalination.

地震预测是地震学研究一个基本目标,而理解地震周期是地震预测的重要环节.遗憾的是,由于地震断层带不但结构复杂,大地震前后短时间内的震源过程更是随时间迅速变化,这些复杂因素使得常规研究方法不再适用.一类特殊的微震成群地发生在主震断层几乎同一地点上,震源系数几乎相同,近年来地震学界通称其为震群(earthquakemultiplet).本文论证如何将这类特殊的微震作为一组人工震源来阐述美国西部两次大地震(LomaPrieta和morganHill)的震后弛豫过程.在加利福尼亚LomaPrieta(1989年9月18日,m7.0)及morganHill(1984年4月24日,m6.2)附近的主震破裂带中就发生了此类震群.其中有两组各包含11个重复地震的震群,分别位于这两个破裂带中,其波形资料质量高,波形及震级变化极小,因而可与实验室条件下的人工震源相比.这些震群地震资料可直接用于计算P波沿波程衰减(即t)的时间性变化,其方法的简单性及结果的精确性都与实验室水平相当.我们的结果显示,每个震群周围分别存在一个异常体,在其各自主震之后的10个月中,该异常体中的P波衰减迅速上升并降落.衰减峰值发生在LomaPrieta地震后2～3周,其震群深度为10.2km.此峰值在morganHill地震后5～6个月发生,其震群中心深度为2.6km.这两个事例中,t波动峰值都超过此前获得的加利福尼亚大致同一地区t绝对值的100%[1].此结果显示了因同震裂隙张开和震后弛豫过程(如流体移动、裂隙复原及岩石压缩),以及孔隙度和流体饱和度在主震源体部分区域发生的变化.衰减达峰值的时间之显著差异则提示我们,裂隙闭合及伴随的流体移动是负载敏感的,深度越大达峰值越快,反之亦然.如将此方法应用于主震前多重地震的资料,将有望更好地理解最终导致主震断层带大破裂的震前微破裂的物理过程.

Ecology and management of rodents in no-till agriculture in Washington, USA

No-till farming is an important approach to sustainable agriculture because it can conserve soil and water ***, rodent populations can thrive under no-till conditions because burrow systems are not disrupted byannual plowing and plant residues build-up on the surface, providing cover and insulation. This can result in substantialcrop damage. We assessed rodent populations, habitat use, food habits, and crop damage in a no-till croppingsystem in Washington, USA. We also conducted preliminary trials of methods to reduce rodent populationsand crop damage. In the fall, many more rodents were captured in fields with unharvested crops than in fieldscontaining only plant stubble, suggesting that rodents leave fields after crop harvest, providing that suitable habitatsare nearby, even when adequate cover is still available in harvested crop fields. By spring, the number of volescaptured was much lower relative to fall. Despite this, capture rates were much higher in surrounding permanentgrass areas than in crop (barley, wheat, pea) fields, suggesting that these grassy areas serve as refugia for ***, the permanent grass cover type was the landscape variable most associated with rodent capture *** three winter pea fields, rodents removed 5–15% of the pea plants over winter. Examination of stomach contentsrevealed that voles mainly fed on grain plants in spring, but that their diet was more diversified in fall. Deer micefed heavily on grain plants in both spring and fall, but also used insects as food. metal barrier exclosures (9 m × 9m), extending above and below ground, did not prevent access by rodents. Rodent populations in areas treated withzinc phosphide on grain were comparable to untreated areas 1 year after application of the rodenticide, perhaps becauseof immigration and recruitment, suggesting that baiting does not provide a long-term solution to rodent damagein no-till agricultural fields.
