AIM:To provide a comprehensive and more representative national data on the disease,especially on treatment options and outcomes,and to determine access of retinoblastoma patients from Luzon,Visayas and Mindanao to eye care,and determine if access is associated with delay in consultation,staging and ***:Cohort study of retinoblastoma patients seen in eleven institutions located in the three major areas of the Philippines namely Luzon,Vizayas and Mindanao from ***:Totally 636 patients,involving 821 eyes,were ***(57%)were from Luzon and were seen in institutions in Luzon(72%).Annually,58±10 new cases were seen with 71%having unilateral *** delay of consultation remained long at 9(3,17)mo,longest in patients with unilateral disease(Pd those from the Visayas(Pd on the International Retinoblastoma Staging System,only 35%of patients had Stage 1 while 47%already had extraocular *** was the most common treatment received by 484 patients while intravenous chemotherapy was received by *** were 250(39%)patients alive,195(31%)dead,85(13%)abandoned,17(3%)refused and 89(14%)with no ***:This study presents the largest cohort of retinoblastoma patients in the Philippines in terms of patients’and participating institutions’number and geographical location and type of institution(private and public).It also presents more comprehensive data on the treatments used and outcomes(survival,globe salvage,and vision retention rates).delay in consultation was still long among patients leading to advanced disease stage and lower survival *** increasing capacity to diagnose and manage retinoblastoma in the country,the delay of consultation remains long primarily due to accessibility issues to eye care institutions especially in the Visayas and financial *** delay was still significant that overall survival rate remain low.

Effects of a poly(hydroxyalkanoate)elastomer and kraft pulp fibres on biocomposite properties and three-dimensional(3d)printability of filaments for fused deposition modelling

Three-dimensional(3d)printing is a useful technique that allows the creation of objects with complex structures by deposition of successive layers of *** materials are often from fossil ***,efforts are being made to produce environmentally friendly materials for 3d *** addition of lignocellulosic fibres to a polymer matrix is one of the alternatives to replace,for instance,glass fibres in composites as reinforcing *** fields of biocom-posites and 3d printing open innovative application areas for pulp fibres from the pulp and paper *** this work,biocomposites of poly(lactic acid)(PLA),poly(hydroxyalkanoate)(PHA)and kraft pulp fibres were prepared in order to find a suitable formulation for filaments for 3d *** effect of two different types of kraft fibres(bleached(B)and unbleached(U))and of PHA on the mechanical and thermal properties of the biocomposites was *** addition of 30%kraft fibres to PLA resulted in an increase of the tensile modulus from 3074 to∼4800 *** the case of biocomposites containing PHA(50%PLA/20%PHA/30%kraft)the increase in modulus was more moderate(PLA+PHA+U:3838 MPa,and PLA+PHA+B:3312 MPa).The tensile strength of PLA(66 MPa)increased to 77 MPa in PLA+kraft biocomposites,while a reduc-tion in strength was observed for PLA+PHA+U(43 MPa)and PLA+PHA+B(32 MPa).Filaments prepared with PLA,PHA and bleached and unbleached pulp fibres showed similar printability of complex geometries,demonstrating that unbleached pulp fibres could also be utilized in the preparation of biocomposites with good mechanical performance and 3d printing properties.

Prevention and therapy of squamous cell carcinoma of the rodent esophagus using freeze-dried black raspberries

Aim:This study was conducted to determine if short-term treatment of N-nitrosomethylbenzylamine (NMBA)-induced tumors in the rat esophagus withdietary freeze-dried black raspberries (FBR) would result in tumor regression andenhanced survival of the ***:Four-week-old male Fisher-344 ratswere administered an AIN-76A control diet and injected subcutaneously with 0.5mg/kg NMBA once per week for 15 *** 19 weeks,when rats had an averageof 5-6 tumors (papillomas) per esophagus,they were given a control diet contain-ing either 5%,10%,or 20% *** 7 weeks of berry treatment,all survivingrats were killed and tumor incidence,number and volume were ***:Esophageal tumor incidences,numbers and volumes in NMBA-treated rats werenot influenced by any of the berry *** were progressive increasesin the survival of NMBA-treated rats fed 5%-20% FBR diets;however,theseincreases were not ***:FBR at 5%,10%,and 20% of the diethad no effect on the development of NMBA-induced tumors in the rat esophagusor on animal survival when administered for 7 weeks beginning at the papillomastage of tumor ***,FBR appear to have no therapeutic value inthe treatment of esophageal *** contrast,dietary FBR are highly effectivein preventing the development of NMBA-induced esophageal tumors in rats whenadministered before and during NMBA treatment or shortly after NMBA treat-ment when the esophagi contain preneoplastic (dysplastic) lesions of varyingdegrees of severity.

Observed permafrost thawing and disappearance near the altitudinal limit of permafrost in the Qilian Mountains

Permafrost degradation has been widely reported on the Tibetan Plateau(TP).However,directly observed evidence of permafrost thawing processes and degradation rates are very limited,although it is expected to be prevalent near the periphery of a permafrost ***,we report permafrost changes and disappearance in the Qilian Mountains(northeastern TP)based on three boreholes instrumented along a 100 m transect during 2014–*** results show that permafrost has significantly degraded in the study area:the mean downward thawing rate from the permafrost table was about 0.16 m per year while the mean upward thawing rate from the permafrost base was about 0.23 m per *** estimate the mean lateral degradation rate of permafrost in this area was∼4.14 m per *** dramatically,the 1.5 m thick permafrost layer at one of the boreholes thawed completely between April of 2018 and december of *** results indicate that changes in climatic condition may have played only a limited role in controlling the active layer thickness in the vicinity of the altitudinal limit of permafrost;moisture content and soil conditions play key roles in site-specific permafrost *** study provides new quantitative insights for understanding changes near the altitudinal limit of permafrost,and we suggest that land surface models or Earth system model studies of the lateral heat exchanges should be implemented in order to better represent permafrost thawing processes.

Testes extracts inhibit heart contractions in females of the blood-feeding insect, Rhodnius prolixus

Myogenic contractions of the heart of the female blood-feeding insect, Rhodnius prolixus （Stal）, are inhibited by crude extracts of testes applied directly to isolated dorsal vessels. dorsal vessels were observed with a stereo microscope and heart beats timed with a stopwatch. In normal Rhodnius saline, hearts contract at 14.8 4- 7.1 beats per minute （n = 45）. Crude extracts of the testes and the two male reproductive accessory organs （the opaque and transparent accessory glands） were prepared from previously frozen tissue by homogenizing 5-20 glands in a small glass homogenizer containing Rhodnius saline, centrifuging for 5 rain at 2 000 g, and collecting the supernatant. Testes extract as low as 1.0 glands per mL inhibit contractions whereas crude extracts of the opaque or transparent accessory glands have no consistent effect. We refer to this cardiac inhibitor as rhodtestolin （Rhodnius testis inhibitory factor）, and discuss its possible effects on the female during copulation.

Since severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS‐CoV‐2)was first identified during late 2019,the sustained spread of this pathogen within the human population has caused worldwide disruption with staggering infection rates and death *** to the accumulation of mutations in SARS‐CoV‐2,the virus has evolved into many variants,five of which have been listed as variants of concern VOCs by the World Health Organization(WHO).Multiple animal models of SARS‐CoV‐2 have been developed to evaluate vaccines and drugs and to assess the pathogenicity,transmissibility and antiviral measures of these ***,we review the cutting‐edge research based on mouse,hamster,ferret and non‐human primate models for evaluating SARS‐CoV‐2 with a focus on the Omicron variant,and highlight the importance of updating vaccines in a timely manner in order to mitigate the negative effects of SARS‐CoV‐2 infections in the human population.

Modeling the specificity of protein-dNA nteractions

The specificity of protein-dNA interactions is most commonly modeled using position weight matrices （PWMs）. First introduced in 1982, they have been adapted to many new types of data and many different approaches have been developed to determine the parameters of the PWM. New high-throughput technologies provide a large amount of data rapidly and offer an unprecedented opportunity to determine accurately the specificities of many transcription factors （TFs）. But taking full advantage of the new data requires advanced algorithms that take into account the biophysical processes involved in generating the data. The new large datasets can also aid in determining when the PWM model is inadequate and must be extended to provide accurate predictions of binding sites. This article provides a general mathematical description of a PWM and how it is used to score potential binding sites, a brief history of the approaches that have been developed and the types of data that are used with an emphasis on algorithms that we have developed for analyzing high-throughput datasets from several new technologies. It also describes extensions that can be added when the simple PWM model is inadequate and further enhancements that may be necessary, it briefly describes some applications of PWMs in the discovery and modeling of in vivo regulatory networks.
