Interfacial Strategies for Smart Slippery Surfaces

The problem of contact line pinning on surfaces is pervasive and contributes to problems from ring stains to ice *** we provide a single conceptual framework for interfacial strategies encompassing five strategies for modifying the solid-liquid interface to remove pinning and increase droplet *** biomimetic strategies are included,(i)reducing the liquid-solid interfacial area inspired by the Lotus effect,(ii)converting the liquid-solid contact to a solid-solid contact by the formation of a liquid marble inspired by how galling aphids remove honeydew,and(iii)converting the liquid-solid interface to a liquid-lubricant contact by the use of a lubricant impregnated surface inspired by the Nepenthes Pitcher *** further strategies are,(iv)converting the liquid-solid contact to a liquid-vapor contact by using the Leidenfrost effect,and(v)converting the contact to a liquid-liquid-like contact using slippery omniphobic covalent attachment of a liquid-like coating(SOCAL).Using these approaches,we explain how surfaces can be designed to have smart functionality whilst retaining the mobility of contact lines and ***,we show how droplets can evaporate at constant contact angle,be positioned using a Cheerios effect,transported by boundary reconfiguration in an energy invariant manner,and drive the rotation of solid components in a Leidenfrost heat *** conceptual framework enables the rationale design of surfaces which are slippery to liquids and is relevant to a diverse range of applications.

Pakistan is an agricultural country spreading over an area of about 79.6 million hectares(Mha)with an arid and semi arid *** 79.6 Mha,about 23 Mha is suitable for crop production and nearly 25 percent of the total cultivated area is designated for rainfed ***,rain-fed agriculture is constrained with multifarious problems such as moisture stress,soil erosion and crusting,nutrient deficiency,depletion and poor nutrient use efficiency,and weed infestation limiting the yield potential of these *** addition,deforestation and poor crop husbandry techniques are commonly noticed *** meet the food requirements,farmers bring all the available pieces of lands under plough including steep *** on steep slopes if not managed on scientific lines,results in severe *** problems faced by the farmers are due to the unsustainable practices they adopt to practice dryland agriculture,limiting the productive potential of these important ***,their potential can be improved by adopting suitable rainwater harvesting techniques;employing scientific soil and water conservation methods and using sustainable agricultural *** paper highlights some important issues associated with the rainfed agriculture of *** strategies for realizing optimum and sustainable yields have been outlined while conserving both land and water resources.

We reported magnetooptical properties of Eu3＋（4f（6）） and Tb3＋（4f（8）） in single crystals of Gd3Ga5O12 （GGG）, Y3Ga5O12 （YGG）, and Eu3＋（4f（6）） in Eu3Ga5O12 （EuGG） for both ions occupying sites of D2 symmetry in the garnet structure. Absorption, luminescence, and magnetic circular polarization of luminescence （MCPL） spectra of Tb3＋ in GGG and YGG and absorption and magnetic circular dichroism （MCD） of Eu3＋ in EuGG were studied. The data were obtained at 85 K and room temperature （RT）. Magnetic susceptibility of Eu3＋ in EuGG was also measured between 85 K and RT. The magnetooptical and magnetic susceptibility data were modeled using the wavefunctions of the crystal-field split energy （Stark） levels of Eu3＋ and Tb3＋ occupying D2 sites in the same garnets. The results reported gave a precise determination of these Stark level assignments and confirmed the symmetry labels （irreducible representations） of the closely-spaced Stark levels （quasi-doublets） found in the 5D1 （Eu3＋） and 5D4 （Tb3＋） multiplets. Ultraviolet （UV） excitation （300 nm） of the 6PJ and 6IJ states of Gd3＋ in the doped GGG crystals led to emission from 5D4 （Tb3＋） and 5D1 and 5D0 （Eu3＋） through radiationless energy transfer to the 4f（n–1）5d band of Tb3＋ and to UV quintet states of Eu3＋. The temperature-dependent emission line shapes and line shifts of the magnetooptical transitions excited by UV radiation suggested a novel way to explore energy transfer mechanisms in this rare-earth doped garnet system.

Spectra of absorption, luminescence, magnetic circular dichroism （MCD）, and magnetic circular polarization of lumines- cence （MCPL） in Gd3Ga5O12：Eu3＋ and Eu3Ga3O12 garnets were studied within the visible spectral range at 300 K. Analysis of the spectral and temperature dependences of the magnetooptical and optical spectra made it possible to identify the magneto-dipole （MD） and electro-dipole （ED） 4f→4f transitions occurring between Stark sublevels of the 7FJ （J=1, 2） and 5D0 multiplets in Eua＋-containing garnet structures. Quantum mechanical ＂mixing＂ had significant influence on quasi-degenerate states of the non-Kramers rare-earth Eu3＋ ion for Eu3GasOl2 in MCD due to forbidden MD transition 7F1→SD0 and for GdaGasOiE：EU3＋ in MCPL due to MD 4f→4f transition 5Do→7F1 and forced ED-transition 5Do→7F2. A parameterized Hamiltonian defined to operate within the entire 4f（6） ground electronic configuration of Eu3＋ ion was used to model the experimental Stark levels, including their irreducible rep- resentations and wavefunctions. The crystal-field parameters were determined through a Monte-Carlo method in which nine in- dependent crystal-field parameters, bkq, were given random starting values and optimized using standard least-squares fitting between calculated and experimental levels. The final fitting standard deviation between 57 calculated-to-experimental levels was 0.73 meV.

ATP-binding cassette（AbC） transporters AbCC1（MRP1）,AbCb1（P-gp）,and AbCG2（bCRP） contribute to chemotherapy *** primary goals of this study were to characterize the efficacy and mechanism of the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug（NSAID）,sulindac sulfide,to reverse AbCC1 mediated resistance to chemotherapeutic drugs and to determine if sulindac sulfide can influence sensitivity to chemotherapeutic drugs independently of drug *** assays were performed to measure resistance of AbC-expressing cell lines to doxorubicin and other chemotherapeutic *** were tested for the ability to restore sensitivity to resistance selected tumor cell lines,as well as a large panel of standard tumor cell *** experiments characterized the mechanism by which sulindac sulfide inhibits AbCC1 substrate and co-substrate（GSH） transport in isolated membrane vesicles and intact *** reversal of multi-drug resistance（MDR）,decreased efflux of doxorubicin,and fluorescent substrates were demonstrated by sulindac sulfide and a related NSAID,indomethacin,in resistance selected and engineered cell lines expressing AbCC 1,but not AbCb 1 or *** sulfide also inhibited transport of leukotriene C_4 into membrane *** sulfide enhanced the sensitivity to doxorubicin in 24 of 47 tumor cell lines,including all melanoma lines tested（7-7）.Sulindac sulfide also decreased intracellular GSH in AbCC1 expressing cells,while the glutathione synthesis inhibitor,bSO,selectively increased sensitivity to sulindac sulfide induced *** sulfide potently and selectively reverses AbCC1-mediated MDR at clinically achievable ***1 expressing tumors may be highly sensitive to the direct cytotoxicity of sulindac sulfide,and in combination with chemotherapeutic drugs that induce oxidative stress.

Increasing both clean water and green energy demands for survival and development are the grand challenges of our ***,we successfully fabricate a novel multifunctional 3D graphene-based catalytic membrane(3D-GCM)with active metal nanoparticles(AMNs)loading for simultaneously obtaining the water purification and clean energy generation,via a“green”one-step laser scribing *** as-prepared 3D-GCM shows high porosity and uniform distribution with AMNs,which exhibits high permeated fluxes(over 100 L m^(−2) h^(−1))and versatile super-adsorption capacities for the removal of tricky organic pollutants from wastewater under ultra-low pressure-driving(0.1 bar).After adsorption saturating,the AMNs in 3D-GCM actuates the advanced oxidization process to self-clean the fouled membrane via the catalysis,and restores the adsorption capacity well for the next time membrane *** importantly,the 3D-GCM with the welding of laser scribing overcomes the lateral shear force damaging during the long-term ***,the 3D-GCM could emit plentiful of hot electrons from AMNs under light irradiation,realizing the membrane catalytic hydrolysis reactions for hydrogen energy ***“green”precision manufacturing with laser scribing technology provides a feasible technology to fabricate high-efficient and robust 3D-GCM microreactor in the tricky wastewater purification and sustainable clean energy production as well.

The boron isotope paleo-pH proxy has been extensively studied due to its potential for understanding past climate change, and further calibrations were considered for accurate applications of the proxy because of significant variability related to biocarbonate microstructure. In this work, we studied the boron isotopic fractionation between modern marine corals and their coexisting seawater collected along shallow area in Sanya bay, South China Sea. The apparent partition coefficient of boron（KD） ranged from 0.83×10-3 to 1.69×10-3, which are in good agreement with previous studies. As the analyzed coral skeleton（~5 g） spanned the growth time period of 1–2 years, we discussed the boron isotopic fractionation between pristine corals and modern seawater using the annual mean seawater pH of 8.12 in this sea area. Without taking the vital effect into account,（11b/10b）coral values of all living corals spread over the curves of（11b/10b）borate vs.（11b/10b）sw with the α4-3 values ranging from 0.974 to 0.982. After calibrating the biological effect on the calcifying fluid pH, the field-based calcification on calcifying fluid pH（i.e., Δ（pHbiol-pHsw）） for coral species of Acropora, Pavona, Pocillopora, Faviidae, and others including Proites are 0.42, 0.33, 0.36, 0.19, respectively, and it is necessary to be validated by coral culturing experiment in the future. Correlations in b/Ca vs. Sr/Ca and b/Ca vs. pHbiol approve temperature and calcifying fluid pH influence on skeletal b/Ca. Fundamental understanding of the thermodynamic basis of the boron isotopes in marine carbonates and seawater will strengthen the confidence in the use of paleo-pH proxy as a powerful tool to monitor atmospheric CO2 variations in the past.

Although the occurrence of coronary stent fracture is rare, recent reports showed that stent fracture after sirolimus-eluting stent (SES) implantation may be associated with neointimal hyperplasia and restenosis. We report two cases of stent fracture that occurred late after elective SES implantation into the right coronary artery (RCA) that were related to the aneurysm, restenosis, thrombosis, and vessel occlusion.
