<i>In vitro</i>ruminal fermentation of leaves from three tree forages in response to incremental levels of polyethylene glycol

Polyethylene glycol (PEG), a phenol binding agent has been used extensively to measure the biological activity of tannins in forage species. The optimum inclusion rate of PEG, per unit weight of sample varies from species to species. Determining optimum inclusion levels can prevent wastage and reduce the cost of diagnosing the biological activity of tannins, especially in developing countries. This study was designed to determine the optimum PEG inclusion levels required to completely ameliorate In vitro ruminal bioactivity of tannins in leaves from Leucaena leucocephala, Gliricidia sepium and Trichanthera gigantea using the Reading Pressure Technique. Fermentation parameters were generated by fitting gas production data to the Orskov and McDonald (1979) non-linear equation: . An asymptotic response to incremental levels of PEG was observed with cumulative gas production at 48 h post inoculation. The minimum level of PEG required to maximize In vitro ruminal fermentation of tree leaves was found to be 200 mg PEG/g DM for all tree species. Gas production rate constant for the insoluble fraction (c) showed an increase (P In vitro organic matter degradability (iOMD) declined (P In vitro ruminal tannin biological activity in leaves of the three tree species.

在湖泊、水库和海洋中均有异重流现象发生,异重流总会卷吸周边流体进入流动。通过理论分析研究卷吸系数,指出必须不断有一定比率的周边流体被卷吸进入流动,异重流的流速才能保持恒定而不是不断加速。根据这一原理,推导出卷吸系数方程,并且说明了卷吸系数不仅与理查逊数有关,也与密度分布和流速分布密切相关,后两者与流动床面的糙度密切相关。卷吸系数大意味着异重流快速与清水掺混,从潜入点运行较短的距离后密度就会降低到临界密度差之下而停止。由此推导出异重流可以运行的最大距离,与异重流初始流量和密度差成正比,与卷吸系数成反比。小浪底水库的实测资料也说明,在水库里只有初始流量和含沙量较高的异重流才能到达坝前。

Classical biological control program for the mealybug Oracella acuta in Guangdong Province, China

The mealybug Oracella acuta, native to the southeastern US, was accidentally introduced into slash pine plantations in Guangdong Province in China in 1988. A classical biological control program was initiated in 1995, and the parasitoids Allotropa oracellae, Acerophaus coccois, and Zarhopalus debarri were imported from the US. A total of 19 972 parasitized mealybugs were shipped to China from 1996-2004, from which 15 430 wasps emerged, 12 933 of which were the three target species. Efforts to establish a mass-rearing program for the parasitoids in China failed. Five field release sites were established, and 6 020 parasitoids were released. Only 118 individuals of the three imported species were collected during establishment checks, although several wasps were collected 1-2 years after the last parasitoid release. Over 2 000 Anagyrus dactylopii, a cosmopolitan parasitoid, emerged from the parasitized mealybugs collected, a majority from the Taishan area near the site of the original introduction ofO. acuta. To date the imported parasitoids have failed to establish, and natural enemies have not noticeably reduced mealybug populations.

Intra-Operative Rupture of Remote Aneurysm during Transphenoidal Resection of Pituitary Macroadenoma

Rupture of intracranial aneurysm resulting in subarachnoid hemorrhage is well known to carry significant risk of poor outcome. Intra-operative rupture of an unknown intracranial aneurysm during a neurosurgical procedure is a rare occurrence that can lead to devastating consequences if not recognized and managed appropriately. Here we describe to our knowledge, the first reported case of previously unknown, remote from the surgical site, intra-operative posterior cerebral artery aneurysm rupture during transnasal endoscopic transphenoidal resection of a pituitary macroadenoma, review relevant literature, and discuss strategies to reduce surgical risk and improve patient outcomes.
