Growth differentiation factor 5:a neurotrophic factor with neuroprotective potential in Parkinson’s disease

Among older adults, incidence and prevalence of aortic disease, peripheral arterial disease (PAD), and venous thromboembolism (VTE) increase as age-related alterations in vascular structure and function are compounded by longer exposure to cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors. This review highlights the unique presentations and treatment strategies for aortic dissection, abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), PAD, and VTE in older adults.

Origins of Ultrafast Pulse Laser-Induced Nano straight Lines with Potential Applications in Detecting subsurface Defects in silicon Carbide Wafers

The inspection of silicon carbide(siC)wafer quality has attracted considerable attention because internal microstructure defects are challenging to detect in production *** and destructive methods are usually employed to detect dislocations and stacking faults inside siC *** optical methods to monitor internal defects are in *** this work,an ultrafast pulse laser was used to address this *** formation of surface nanostructures under the ultrafast laser processing of siC wafers was explored *** study discovered the origins of a typical surface nanostructure to the subsurface dislocation structure,called low-energy laser-induced nano straight lines(LLINss),which forms under low-energy ultrafast pulse laser irradiation on a siC *** specific laser fluence ranges to form grooves,laser-induced periodic surface structures,LLINss,and their hybrids were *** formation of LLINss required an ultrafast laser(pulse width 280 fs)energy density less than 0.224 J/mm2,whereas that of pure LLINss required a small range of 0.1–0.08 J/mm2 for *** and their surrounding microstructures were observed using scanning transmission electron microscopy to identify their origin,which is related to the subsurface dislocation *** dynamics analysis revealed that the subsurface defect area has a high energy level,which can facilitate amorphous transformation under the irradiation of an ultrafast laser,and the amorphous area had a tendency to evolve into ***,subsurface lattice defects can be detected *** work opens new ways to detect the subsurface quality of semiconductor wafers in a green and sustainable manner.

Evolving provenance in the Proterozoic Pranhita-Godavari Basin,India

The Pranhita-Godavari Basin in central eastern India is one of the Proterozoic ＂Purana＂ basins of cratonic India. New geochronology demonstrates that it has a vast depositional history of repeated basin reactivation from the Palaeoproterozoic to the Mesozoic. U-Pb laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry dating of detrital zircons from two samples of the somanpalli Group--a member of the oldest sedimentary cycle in the valley--constrains its depositional age to - 1620 Ma and demonstrates a tripartite age provenance with peaks at - 3500 Ma, - 2480 Ma and - 1620 Ma, with minor age peaks in the Eoarchaean （ - 3.8 Ga） and at - 2750 Ma. These ages are consistent with palaeocurrent data suggesting a southerly source from the Krishna Province and Enderby Land in East Antarctica. The similarity in the maximum depositional age with previously published autbigenic glauconite ages suggest that the origin of the Pranhita-Godvari Graben originated as a rift that formed at a high angle to the coeval evolving late Meosproterozoic Krishna Province as Enderby Land collided with the Dharwar craton of India. In contrast, detrital zircons from the Cycle III sullavai Group red sandstones yielded a maximum depositional age of 970 - 20 Ma and had age peaks of -2550 Ma, -1600 Ma and then a number of Mesoproterozoic detrital zircons terminating in three analyses at - 970 Ma. The provenance of these is again consistent with a southerly source from the Eastern Ghats Orogen and Antarctica. Later cycles of deposition include the overlying Albaka/Usur Formations and finally the late Palaeozoic to Mesozoic Gondwana supergroup.

Kinetics of Local Anesthetic Interactions with Model Membranes: Adsorption and Permeation

Introduction: Local anesthetics (LAs) must be adsorbed to and permeate through membranes to reach their sites of action. The rates of these processes critically affect drug actions at the cellular level and also the in vivo pharmacokinetics of perineurally injected drugs. Therefore, we measured the adsorption equilibria and permeation kinetics of two LAs local anesthetics with markedly different hydrophobicities: tetracaine (TTC, Psub>octanol:buffersub> = 3.6 × 10sup>3sup>) and procaine (PRO, Psub>octanol:buffersub> = 8.1 × 10sup>1sup>), in unilamellar membranes of different composition and fluidity. Methods: Interactions with unilamellar vesicles made of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC), at 23°C (solid gel state) or 45°C (liquid crystal state), without or with cholesterol (Chol), were investigated by a combination of fluorescence and stopped-flow techniques. Membrane adsorption was monitored by the LA’s fluorescence. Membrane permeation was monitored by the decrease of fluorescence intensity of intra-vesicular pyranine, when quenched by neighboring TTC or PRO. Results: Ionized TTC (TTCHsup>+sup>) and procaine (PROHsup>+sup>) adsorb to membranes more slowly and weakly than their neutral counterparts (time constant τ ~ 0.1 sec). Fluidizing of membranes, at the higher temperature (45°C) or by Chol inclusion, accelerated LA adsorption (faster than the mixing time of the stopped-flow device, 0.008 s). Permeation of protonated TTCHsup>+sup> through the solid gel DPPC membranes (23°C) occurred far more slowly than adsorption, (τ = 36.7 ± 0.7 s, n = 9), and 3 times slower than neutral TTC (τ = 10.9 ± 0.7 s, n = 9);neutral PRO permeated these membranes at the same rate as TTC. Inclusion of Chol with DPPC, disordering the fatty acyl tails of membrane phospholipids while crowding their polar headgroups, slowed permeation of TTC and of PRO to an even greater degree. Effect of airplane transport of donor livers on post-liver transplantation survival

AIM To evaluate the effect of long haul airplane transport of donor livers on post-transplant outcomes. METHODs A retrospective cohort study of patients who received a liver transplantation was performed in Perth, Australia from 1992 to 2012. Donor and recipient characteristics information were extracted from Western Australian liver transplantation service database. Patients were followed up for a mean of six years. Patient and graft survival were evaluated and compared between patients who received a local donor liver and those who received an airplane transported donor liver. Predictors of survival were determined by univariate and multivariate analysis using cox *** One hundred and ninety-three patients received alocal donor liver and 93 patients received an airplane transported donor liver. Airplane transported livers had a significantly lower alanine transaminase(mean: 45 U/L vs 84 U/L, P = 0.035), higher donor risk index(mean: 1.88 vs 1.42, P schemic time(CIT)(mean: 10.1 h vs 6.4 h, P s a weak correlation between CIT and transport distance(r2 = 0.29, P s six years and 93 patients had graft failure. Multivariate analysis found only airplane transport retained significance for graft loss(HR = 1.92, 95%CI: 1.16-3.17). One year graft survival was 0.88 for those with a local liver and was 0.71 for those with an airplane transported liver. One year graft loss was due to primary graft non-function or associated with preservation injury in 20.8% of recipients of an airplane transported liver compared with 4.6% in those with a local liver(P = 0.027). CONCLUsION Airplane transport of donor livers was independently associated with reduced graft survival following liver transplantation.
