Aged populations have remarkable variability in recent memory and cognitive mapping. Although some individuals may have substantial age-related impairments, others perform almost as well as young individuals. This paper reviews the relevant data on aged rats and indicates two challenges for biomarkers of aging. The first is to provide an appropriate quantitative description of these individual differences. The second is to use them effectively as markers for age-related changes in psychological functions and their neural substrates.

Obj.ctive:To elucidate the progression of angioedema of the head and neck with routine management and to assess the utility of serial physical exams and fiberoptic laryngos-copy in its management. Methods:This study was a prospective observational research. From 2013 to 2014, a prospec-tive observational study was conducted at a tertiary referral center. Forty patient were ap-proached, 7 refused, 33 (18e90 years old) were enrolled. Patients presented with angioedema involving the head and neck over a 12 month period were asked to participate in the study. Physical examination and fiberoptic laryngoscopy were performed at presentation and then repeated at least 1 h later. Results:Thirty-three patients with head and neck angioedema from any cause were enrolled (mean age 58, range 23e89 years). The upper lip was the most commonly involved site (58%). On reevaluation, 82% of patients reported subj.ctive improvement in symptoms. Theassociation between subj.ctive improvement and the physical exam, including fiberoptic laryngoscopy findings, was statistically significant (P Conclusion:In stable patients with angioedema of any head and neck subsite, self-reported symptoms are associated with clinical stability or improvement as assessed by physical signs and fiberoptic laryngoscopy. Patients’ symptoms may be an appropriate surrogate to monitor clinical status without the need for routine serial physical examinations or fiberoptic laryngos-copy, though further study is needed. Dear Editor,Chikungunya virus(CHIKV)is a mosquito-borne virus belonging to the family Togaviridae,genus Alphavirus,and was first isolated in Tanzania in the 1950s(Silva and Dermody 2017;Weaver and Lecuit 2015).Human infections with CHIKV typically result in a rapid-onset febrile disease,with symptoms that include fever,headache,rash,severe j.int and muscle pain,as well as prolonged periods of disability in some patients(Weaver and Lecuit 2015;Silva and Dermody 2017).

Dear Editor, The 2015-2016 outbreak of Zika virus （ZIKV） fever, first reported in Brazil during early 2015 （Zanluca et al., 2015）, has infected millions of people and is a global public health concern. ZIKV infections are associated with fetal microcephaly, as well as neurological complications in humans. The virus can be shed in the semen and vaginal secretions of humans, leading to sexual transmission, and unexpectedly ZIKV infections cause severe damage to the male reproductive organs in male mice （Govero et al., 2016; Ma et al., 2016）.

Spectra of absorption, luminescence, magnetic circular dichroism （MCD）, and magnetic circular polarization of lumines- cence （MCPL） in Gd3Ga5O12：Eu3＋ and Eu3Ga3O12 garnets were studied within the visible spectral range at 300 K. Analysis of the spectral and temperature dependences of the magnetooptical and optical spectra made it possible to identify the magneto-dipole （MD） and electro-dipole （ED） 4f→4f transitions occurring between Stark sublevels of the 7Fj.（j.1, 2） and 5D0 multiplets in Eua＋-containing garnet structures. Quantum mechanical ＂mixing＂ had significant influence on quasi-degenerate states of the non-Kramers rare-earth Eu3＋ ion for Eu3GasOl2 in MCD due to forbidden MD transition 7F1→SD0 and for GdaGasOiE：EU3＋ in MCPL due to MD 4f→4f transition 5Do→7F1 and forced ED-transition 5Do→7F2. A parameterized Hamiltonian defined to operate within the entire 4f（6） ground electronic configuration of Eu3＋ ion was used to model the experimental Stark levels, including their irreducible rep- resentations and wavefunctions. The crystal-field parameters were determined through a Monte-Carlo method in which nine in- dependent crystal-field parameters, Bkq, were given random starting values and optimized using standard least-squares fitting between calculated and experimental levels. The final fitting standard deviation between 57 calculated-to-experimental levels was 0.73 meV.
