Nanostructured fibers as a versatile photonic platform: radiative cooling and waveguiding through transverse Anderson localization

Broadband high reflectance in nature is often the result of randomly,three-dimensionally structured materials.This study explores unique optical properties associated with one-dimensional nanostructures discovered in silk cocoon fibers of the comet moth,Argema mittrei.The fibers are populated with a high density of air voids randomly distributed across the fiber cross-section but are invariant along the fiber.These filamentary air voids strongly scatter light in the solar spectrum.A single silk fiber measuring~50μm thick can reflect 66%of incoming solar radiation,and this,together with the fibers’high emissivity of 0.88 in the mid-infrared range,allows the cocoon to act as an efficient radiative-cooling device.drawing inspiration from these natural radiative-cooling fibers,biomimetic nanostructured fibers based on both regenerated silk fibroin and polyvinylidene difluoride are fabricated through wet spinning.Optical characterization shows that these fibers exhibit exceptional optical properties for radiative-cooling applications:nanostructured regenerated silk fibers provide a solar reflectivity of 0.73 and a thermal emissivity of 0.90,and nanostructured polyvinylidene difluoride fibers provide a solar reflectivity of 0.93 and a thermal emissivity of 0.91.The filamentary air voids lead to highly directional scattering,giving the fibers a highly reflective sheen,but more interestingly,they enable guided optical modes to propagate along the fibers through transverse Anderson localization.This discovery opens up the possibility of using wild silkmoth fibers as a biocompatible and bioresorbable material for optical signal and image transport.

Revolutionizing plasmonic platform via magnetic field-assisted confined ultrafast laser deposition of high-density,uniform,and ultrafine nanoparticle arrays

The remarkable capabilities of 2d plasmonic surfaces in controlling optical waves havegarnered significant attention.However,the challenge of large-scale manufacturing of uniform,well-aligned,and tunable plasmonic surfaces has hindered their industrialization.To address this,we present a groundbreaking tunable plasmonic platform design achieved throughmagnetic field(MF)assisted ultrafast laser direct deposition in air.Through precise control of metal nanoparticles(NPs),with cobalt(Co)serving as the model material,employing an MF,and fine-tuning ultrafast laser parameters,we have effectively converted coarse and non-uniform NPs into densely packed,uniform,and ultrafine NPs(~3 nm).This revolutionary advancement results in the creation of customizable plasmonic‘hot spots,’which play a pivotal role insurface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy(SERS)sensors.The profound impact of this designable plasmonic platform lies in its close association with plasmonic resonance and energyenhancement.When the plasmonic nanostructures resonate with incident light,they generate intense local electromagnetic fields,thus vastly increasing the Raman scattering signal.This enhancement leads to an outstanding 2–18 fold boost in SERS performance and unparalleled sensing sensitivity down to 10^(-10)M.Notably,the plasmonic platform also demonstratesrobustness,retaining its sensing capability even after undergoing 50 cycles of rinsing andre-loading of chemicals.Moreover,this work adheres to green manufacturing standards,making it an efficient and environmentally friendly method for customizing plasmonic‘hot spots’inSERS devices.Our study not only achieves the formation of high-density,uniform,and ultrafine NP arrays on a tunable plasmonic platform but also showcases the profound relation betweenplasmonic resonance and energy enhancement.The outstanding results observed in SERS sensors further emphasize the immense potential of this technology for energy-relatedapplications,including photocatalysis,photovoltaics,and clean water,propelling us closer

The Submillimeter Wave Astronomy Satellite（SWAS） was the first space telescope capable of high spectral resolution observations of terahertz spectral lines. We have investigated the integration ability of its two receivers and spectrometer during five and a half years of on-orbit operation. The CI, O2, H2O, and13CO spectra taken toward all observed Galactic sources were analyzed. The present results are based on spectra with a total integration time of up to 2.72 × 10～4hr（■10～8s）. The noise in the spectra is generally consistent with that expected from the radiometer equation, without any sign of approaching a noise floor. This noise performance reflects the extremely stable performance of the passively cooled front end as well as other relevant components in the SWAS instrument throughout its mission lifetime.

Recovery rates of persistent post-COVId-19 olfactory dysfunction using psychophysical assessment:A longitudinal cohort study

Objectives:Persistent olfactory dysfunction(Od)following loss of smell associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection is a major feature of long COVId.Perspectives on the prevalence of persistent Od predominantly rely on self-reported olfactory function.Few studies have tracked longitudinal rates of recovery using psychophysical assessment among patients presenting for evaluation of persistent Od beyond a window of acute recovery.data anchored in standardized testing methods are needed to counsel patients who fail to acutely regain their sense of smell.This study aims to quantify the degree of persistent Od in post-COVId-19 patients who experience subjective and psychophysical Od.Methods:We grouped participants presenting for Od evaluation into cohorts based on both subjective and psychophysical olfactory status at a baseline assessment and assessed their olfactory abilities with a visual analogue scale and the Sniffin'Sticks extended test at baseline and 1-year time points.Participants had confirmed a history of COVId-19 by lab evaluation or clinical diagnosis if lab evaluation was not available.Results:Baseline olfactory evaluation was completed by 122 participants,53 of whom completed the 1-year follow-up assessment.Among participants presenting with perceived Od,74.5%had confirmed psychophysical Od at baseline,with 55.1%at 1-year follow-up.Participants had reliable trends in self-rated versus psychophysically tested olfactory function at both time points.The total threshold,discrimination,and identification(TdI)score improved by+3.25 points in the cohort with psychophysical Od(p=0.0005),with this improvement largely attributable to an increase in median threshold scores(+2.75 points;p=0.0004).Conclusions:Od persists in a significant number of patients who fail to acutely recovery their sense of smell after COVId-19,with many demonstrating lingering deficits at 1-year.Improvements in threshold,but not discrimination or identification,most significantly mediate improvement of total TdI score at follow-up.

With an extensive range of distinctive features at nano meter-scale thicknesses,two-dimensional(2d)materials drawn the attention of the scientific community.despite tremendous advancements in exploratory research on 2d materials,knowledge of 2d electrical transport and carrier dynamics still in its infancy.Thus,here we highlighted the electrical characteristics of 2d materials with electronic band structure,electronic transport,dielectric constant,carriers mobility.The atomic thinness of 2d materials makes substantially scaled field-effect transistors(FETs)with reduced short-channel effects conceivable,even though strong carrier mobility required for high performance,low-voltage device operations.We also discussed here about factors affecting 2d materials which easily enhanced the activity of those materials for various applications.Presently,Those 2d materials used in state-of-the-art electrical and optoelectronic devices because of the extensive nature of their electronic band structure.2d materials offer unprecedented freedom for the design of novel p-n junction device topologies in contrast to conventional bulk semiconductors.We also,describe the numerous 2d p-n junctions,such as homo junction and hetero junction including mixed dimensional junctions.Finally,we talked about the problems and potential for the future.

Numerical Analysis on the Effect of n-Si on Cu(In, Ga)Se₂ Based Thin-Films for High-Performance Solar Cells by 1d-SCAPS

We report the performances of a chalcopyrite Cu(In, Ga)Se2 CIGS-based thin-film solar cell with a newly employed high conductive n-Si layer. The data analysis was performed with the help of the 1d-Solar Cell Capacitance Simulator (1d-SCAPS) software program. The new device structure is based on the CIGS layer as the absorber layer, n-Si as the high conductive layer, i-In2S3, and i-ZnO as the buffer and window layers, respectively. The optimum CIGS bandgap was determined first and used to simulate and analyze the cell performance throughout the experiment. This analysis revealed that the absorber layer’s optimum bandgap value has to be 1.4 eV to achieve maximum efficiency of 22.57%. Subsequently, output solar cell parameters were analyzed as a function of CIGS layer thickness, defect density, and the operating temperature with an optimized n-Si layer. The newly modeled device has a p-CIGS/n-Si/In2S3/Al-ZnO structure. The main objective was to improve the overall cell performance while optimizing the thickness of absorber layers, defect density, bandgap, and operating temperature with the newly employed optimized n-Si layer. The increase of absorber layer thickness from 0.2 - 2 µm showed an upward trend in the cell’s performance, while the increase of defect density and operating temperature showed a downward trend in solar cell performance. This study illustrates that the proposed cell structure shows higher cell performances and can be fabricated on the lab-scale and industrial levels.

AIM:To provide a comprehensive and more representative national data on the disease,especially on treatment options and outcomes,and to determine access of retinoblastoma patients from Luzon,Visayas and Mindanao to eye care,and determine if access is associated with delay in consultation,staging and outcomes.METHOdS:Cohort study of retinoblastoma patients seen in eleven institutions located in the three major areas of the Philippines namely Luzon,Vizayas and Mindanao from 2010-2020.RESULTS:Totally 636 patients,involving 821 eyes,were included.Majority(57%)were from Luzon and were seen in institutions in Luzon(72%).Annually,58±10 new cases were seen with 71%having unilateral disease.Median delay of consultation remained long at 9(3,17)mo,longest in patients with unilateral disease(Pd those from the Visayas(Pd on the International Retinoblastoma Staging System,only 35%of patients had Stage 1 while 47%already had extraocular disease.Enucleation was the most common treatment received by 484 patients while intravenous chemotherapy was received by 469.There were 250(39%)patients alive,195(31%)dead,85(13%)abandoned,17(3%)refused and 89(14%)with no data.CONCLUSION:This study presents the largest cohort of retinoblastoma patients in the Philippines in terms of patients’and participating institutions’number and geographical location and type of institution(private and public).It also presents more comprehensive data on the treatments used and outcomes(survival,globe salvage,and vision retention rates).delay in consultation was still long among patients leading to advanced disease stage and lower survival rate.despite increasing capacity to diagnose and manage retinoblastoma in the country,the delay of consultation remains long primarily due to accessibility issues to eye care institutions especially in the Visayas and financial concerns.The delay was still significant that overall survival rate remain low.

Sulindac sulfide selectively increases sensitivity of ABCC1 expressing tumor cells to doxorubicin and glutathione depletion

ATP-binding cassette（ABC） transporters ABCC1（MRP1）,ABCB1（P-gp）,and ABCG2（BCRP） contribute to chemotherapy failure.The primary goals of this study were to characterize the efficacy and mechanism of the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug（NSAId）,sulindac sulfide,to reverse ABCC1 mediated resistance to chemotherapeutic drugs and to determine if sulindac sulfide can influence sensitivity to chemotherapeutic drugs independently of drug efflux.Cytotoxicity assays were performed to measure resistance of ABC-expressing cell lines to doxorubicin and other chemotherapeutic drugs.NSAIds were tested for the ability to restore sensitivity to resistance selected tumor cell lines,as well as a large panel of standard tumor cell lines.Other experiments characterized the mechanism by which sulindac sulfide inhibits ABCC1 substrate and co-substrate（GSH） transport in isolated membrane vesicles and intact cells.Selective reversal of multi-drug resistance（MdR）,decreased efflux of doxorubicin,and fluorescent substrates were demonstrated by sulindac sulfide and a related NSAId,indomethacin,in resistance selected and engineered cell lines expressing ABCC 1,but not ABCB 1 or ABCG2.Sulindac sulfide also inhibited transport of leukotriene C_4 into membrane vesicles.Sulindac sulfide enhanced the sensitivity to doxorubicin in 24 of 47 tumor cell lines,including all melanoma lines tested（7-7）.Sulindac sulfide also decreased intracellular GSH in ABCC1 expressing cells,while the glutathione synthesis inhibitor,BSO,selectively increased sensitivity to sulindac sulfide induced cytotoxicity.Sulindac sulfide potently and selectively reverses ABCC1-mediated MdR at clinically achievable concentrations.ABCC1 expressing tumors may be highly sensitive to the direct cytotoxicity of sulindac sulfide,and in combination with chemotherapeutic drugs that induce oxidative stress.

Since severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS‐CoV‐2)was first identified during late 2019,the sustained spread of this pathogen within the human population has caused worldwide disruption with staggering infection rates and death tolls.due to the accumulation of mutations in SARS‐CoV‐2,the virus has evolved into many variants,five of which have been listed as variants of concern VOCs by the World Health Organization(WHO).Multiple animal models of SARS‐CoV‐2 have been developed to evaluate vaccines and drugs and to assess the pathogenicity,transmissibility and antiviral measures of these VOCs.Here,we review the cutting‐edge research based on mouse,hamster,ferret and non‐human primate models for evaluating SARS‐CoV‐2 with a focus on the Omicron variant,and highlight the importance of updating vaccines in a timely manner in order to mitigate the negative effects of SARS‐CoV‐2 infections in the human population.

Prevention and therapy of squamous cell carcinoma of the rodent esophagus using freeze-dried black raspberries

Aim:This study was conducted to determine if short-term treatment of N-nitrosomethylbenzylamine (NMBA)-induced tumors in the rat esophagus withdietary freeze-dried black raspberries (FBR) would result in tumor regression andenhanced survival of the animals.Methods:Four-week-old male Fisher-344 ratswere administered an AIN-76A control diet and injected subcutaneously with 0.5mg/kg NMBA once per week for 15 weeks.At 19 weeks,when rats had an averageof 5-6 tumors (papillomas) per esophagus,they were given a control diet contain-ing either 5%,10%,or 20% FBR.After 7 weeks of berry treatment,all survivingrats were killed and tumor incidence,number and volume were determined.Results:Esophageal tumor incidences,numbers and volumes in NMBA-treated rats werenot influenced by any of the berry treatments.There were progressive increasesin the survival of NMBA-treated rats fed 5%-20% FBR diets;however,theseincreases were not significant.Conclusion:FBR at 5%,10%,and 20% of the diethad no effect on the development of NMBA-induced tumors in the rat esophagusor on animal survival when administered for 7 weeks beginning at the papillomastage of tumor development.Thus,FBR appear to have no therapeutic value inthe treatment of esophageal tumors.In contrast,dietary FBR are highly effectivein preventing the development of NMBA-induced esophageal tumors in rats whenadministered before and during NMBA treatment or shortly after NMBA treat-ment when the esophagi contain preneoplastic (dysplastic) lesions of varyingdegrees of severity.
