Friction stir welding （FSW） process ha. ga.ned a.tention in recent yea.s beca.se of its a.va.ta.es over the conventiona. fusion welding process. These a.va.ta.es include the a.sence of hea. forma.ion in the a.fected zone a.d the a.sence of la.ge distortion, porosity, oxida.ion, a.d cra.king. Experimenta. investiga.ions a.e necessa.y to understa.d the physica. beha.ior tha. ca.ses the high tensile strength of welded joints of different meta.s a.d a.loys. Existing litera.ure indica.es tha. tensile properties exhibit strong dependence on the rota.iona. speed, tra.erse speed, a.d a.ia. force of the tool tha. wa. used. Therefore, this study introduces the experimenta. procedure for mea.uring tensile properties, na.ely, ultima.e tensile strength （UTS） a.d tensile elonga.ion of the welded a. 7020 a. a.loy. Experimenta. findings suggest tha. a.welded pa.t with high UTS ca. be a.hieved a. a.lower hea. input compa.ed with the high hea. input condition. a.numerica. a.proa.h ba.ed on genetic progra.ming is employed to produce the functiona. rela.ionships between tensile properties a.d the three inputs （rota.iona. speed, tra.erse speed, a.d a.ia. force） of the FSW process. The formula.ed models were va.ida.ed ba.ed on the experimenta. da.a. using the sta.istica. metrics. The effect of the three inputs on the tensile properties wa. investiga.ed using 2D a.d 3D a.a.yses. a.high UTS wa. a.hieved, including a.rota.iona. speed of 1050 r/min a.d tra.erse speed of 95 mm/min. The results a.so indica.e tha. 8 kN a.ia. force should be set prior to the FSW process.
