Back to school after lockdown: The effect of COVID-19 restrictions on children’s device-based physical activity metrics

Background:The coronavirus disease-2019(COVID-19) pandemic and national lockdowns took away opportunities for children to be physically *** study aimed to determine the effect of the COVID-19 lockdown on accelerometer-assessed physical activity(PA) in children in ***:Eight hundred participants(8-18 years old),stratified by sex,age,and socio-economic status,wore Axivity AX3 accelerometers for7 days in February 2021,during the lockdown,and in May 2021,while in *** accelerometer data were processed in R-package GGIR,and cut-point data,average acceleration(AvAcc),intensity gradient,and the acceleration above which the most active X minutes are accumulated(MX) metrics were *** mixed models were used to assess the influence of time-point,sex,age,and socioeconomic status(SES) on ***:During lockdown,moderate-to-vigorous PA was 38.4±24.3 min/day;sedentary time was 849.4±196.6 min/day;mean± *** levels increased significantly upon return to school(all variables p <0.001).While there were no sex differences during lockdown(p=0.233),girls engaged in significantly less moderate-to-vigorous PA than boys once back in school(p <0.001).Furthermore,boys had more favorable intensity profiles than girls(intensity gradient:p <0.001),regardless of *** levels decreased with age at both time-points;upper secondary school girls were the least active group,with an average M30 of 195.2 mg(while in school).Conclusion:The lockdown affected boys more than girls,as reflected by the disappearance of the typical sex difference in PA levels during lockdown,although these were re-established on return to *** secondary school(especially girls) might need specific COVID-recovery intervention.

Background:Higher levels of cardiorespiratory fitness are associated with reduced asthma severity and increased quality of life in those with ***,the purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a 6-month high-intensity interval training(HIIT)intervention in adolescents with and without ***:A total of 616 adolescents(334 boys;13.0±1.1 years,1.57±0.10 m,52.6±12.9 kg,mean±SD),including 155 with asthma(78 boys),were recruited as part of a randomized controlled trial from 5 schools(4 control and 1 intervention).The 221 intervention participants(116 boys;47 asthma)completed 6 months of school-based HIIT(30 min,3 times per week,10-30 s bouts at>90%age-predicted maximum heart rate with equal rest).At baseline,mid-intervention,post-intervention,and 3-month follow-up,measurements for 20-m shuttle run,body mass index(BMI),lung function,Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory,Paediatric Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire,and Asthma Control Questionnaire were ***,69 adolescents(39 boys(of the 36 with asthma there were 21 boys))also completed an incremental ramp *** analysis,each group’s data(intervention and control)were divided into those with and without ***:Participants with asthma did not differ from their peers in any parameter of aerobic fitness,at any time-point,but were characterized by a greater *** intervention elicited a significant improvement in maximal aerobic fitness but no change in sub-maximal parameters of aerobic fitness,lung function,or quality of life irrespective of asthma *** in the intervention group maintained their BMI,whereas BMI significantly increased in the control group throughout the 6-month ***:HIIT represents an effective tool for improving aerobic fitness and maintaining BMI in adolescents,irrespective of asthma *** was well-tolerated by those with asthma,who evidenced a similar aerobic fitness to their healthy peers and responded equally

Gas Quenching Small Components

Gas quenching is an environmentally friendly and effective way of quenching components. However it has not been possible to apply it to small components because of the difficulties of jigging. A method of gas quenching such small components is described in which they are levitated in a confined gas stream. The method is suitable for quenching low alloy steel components that weigh between 1 and lOg.

Background:Physiological and biochemical processes across tissues of the body are regulated in response to the high demands of intense physical activity in several occupations,such as firefighting,law enforcement,military,and sports.A better understanding of such processes can ultimately help improve human performance and prevent illnesses in the work ***:To study regulatory processes in intense physical activity simulating real-life conditions,we performed a multi-omics analysis of 3 biofluids(blood plasma,urine,and saliva)collected from 11 wildland firefighters before and after a 45 min,intense exercise *** profiles ***-exercise were compared by Student’s t-test followed by pathway analysis and comparison between the different omics ***:Our multi-omics analysis identified and quantified 3835 proteins,730 lipids and 182 metabolites combining the 3 different types of *** blood plasma analysis revealed signatures of tissue damage and acute repair response accompanied by enhanced carbon metabolism to meet energy *** urine analysis showed a strong,concomitant regulation of 6 out of 8 identified proteins from the renin-angiotensin system supporting increased excretion of catabolites,reabsorption of nutrients and maintenance of fluid *** saliva,we observed a decrease in 3 pro-inflammatory cytokines and an increase in 8 antimicrobial peptides.A systematic literature review identified 6 papers that support an altered susceptibility to respiratory ***:This study shows simultaneous regulatory signatures in biofluids indicative of homeostatic maintenance during intense physical activity with possible effects on increased infection susceptibility,suggesting that caution against respiratory diseases could benefit workers on highly physical demanding jobs.

CAB Furnace Atmosphere Visualisation Using Computational Fluid Dynamics

In today’s automotive industry almost all car and truck radiators, oil coolers and air conditioning heat exchangers are manufactured using Nocolok Controlled Atmosphere Brazing (CAB). One of the most critical elements of the brazing process is the atmosphere used to protect the flux. Oxygen content is the major variable affecting the performance of the nitrogen atmosphere. Furnace design and flow rate are the major factors affecting oxygen content. Optimisation of these atmosphere parameters has a significant impact on operating cost, and on the quality and consistency of the brazed product. Computational fluid dynamics provides a tool to visualise the atmosphere conditions within the furnace and to explore the effects of changing some of the variables. Modelling the atmosphere in a typical CAB furnace has shown the importance of the integrity of the curtains in maintaining the low oxygen levels required for successful Nocolok brazing. For a given set of curtains it has shown that the only effective way of decreasing oxygen levels is to increase atmosphere gas flow.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) currently affects ~2.5 million people worldwide. MS is typically diagnosed in young adults and is usually not fatal, meaning people live long lives with MS. Affected individuals usually suffer from progressive physical and/or cognitive disability, often including fatigue (89.6%), depression (53.9%), memory loss (49.0%), motor or sensory dysfunction (76.4%, 70.4%) and urinary incontinence (50.8%).

EFFECT OF DEEP COLD TREATMENT ON TWO CASE HARDENING STEELS

Although cold treatments have been used to reduce the retained austenite in the cases of carburised steel for many years, there is little data on deep cold temperatures below -70℃ or treatment times longer than an hour or two. This study set out to determine the effects of such deep cold treatments at temperatures -150℃ for 24 h. The study investigated the effects of deep cold on the microstructure, hardness profile, residual stress and internal oxidation on two typical carburising steels, 16MnCr5 and 21NiCrMo2. The study found that for both 16MnCr5 and 21NiCrMo2 carburised to a case depth of approximately 0.8 mm, the longer and colder the deep cold treatment, the more the austenite retained in the case was converted to martensite and the harder it became. After low temperature tempering, the hardness difference was smaller, but still significant. In both steels, the case appeared more refined and homogeneous after deep cold treatment. Deep cold treatment had a negligible effect on the core properties of either steel.

Nest sanitation behavior does not increase the likelihood of parasitic egg rejection in herring gulls

Birds’behavioral response to brood parasitism can be influenced not only by evolution but also by context and individual *** could include nest sanitation,in which birds remove debris from their ***,nest sanitation behavior might be an evolutionary precursor to the rejection of parasitic ***,the context or experience of performing nest sanitation behavior might increase the detection or prime the removal of parasitic eggs,but evidence to date is *** tested incubation-stage nests of herring gulls Larus argentatus to ask whether nest sanitation increased parasitic egg *** an initial set of 160 single-object experiments,small,red,blocky objects were usually rejected(18 of 20 nests),whereas life-sized,3D-printed herring gull eggs were not rejected whether red(0 of 20)or the olive-tan base color of herring gull eggs(0 of 20).Next,we simultaneously presented a red,3D-printed gull egg and a small,red *** nests exhibited frequent nest sanitation(small,red block removed at 40 of 48 nests),but egg rejection remained uncommon(5 of those 40)and not significantly different from control nests(5 of 49)which received the parasitic egg but not the priming ***,performance of nest sanitation did not shape individuals’responses to ***,parents were more likely to reject the parasitic egg when they were present as we approached the nest to add the experimental *** on the underlying mechanism,this could also be a case of experience creating variation in responses to parasitism.
