Branchiogenic carcinoma is extremely rare. The majority of branchiogenic carcinomas are cystic metastases originating in the tonsils, and not true carcinomas arising in a branchial cleft cyst. Isolated cystic neck lesions necessitate a thorough search for a primary tumor, as with other occult primaries presenting with cervical metastases. As the existence of primary branchiogenic carcinoma is controversial, Martin and colleagues and then Khafif and coworkers established a series of widely accepted criteria to recognize this type of carcinoma. We report a case of a large cervical mass, consistent with a branchiogenic carcinoma of the second branchial arch. The patient underwent excision of the neck mass through a radical neck dissection. The cyst wall was found to have squamous cell carcinoma arising from the benign epithelium. Follow-up at 7 years revealed no evidence of recurrence. All diagnostic criteria for a true branchiogenic carcinoma were met in this case. The absence of adjuvant irradiation is a further confirmation that the mass is not a cystic node metastasis but a carcinoma arised from within a branchial cleft cyst.

Nef-M1, a CXCR4 Peptide Antagonist, Enhances Apoptosis and Inhibits Primary Tumor Growth and Metastasis in Breast Cancer

Results from studies with animal models suggest that, in many cancers, CXCR4 is an important therapeutic target and that CXCR4 antagonists may be promising treatments for primary cancers and for metastases. The Nef protein effectively competes with CXCR4’s natural ligand, SDF-1α, and induces apoptosis. As described in this report, the Nef-M1 peptide (Nef protein amino acids 50 - 60) inhibits primary tumor growth and metastasis of breast cancer (BC). Four BC cell lines (MDA-MB-231, MDA-MB-468, MCF 7, and DU4475) and primary human mammary epithelium (HME) cells were evaluated for their response to the Nef protein and to the Nef-M1 peptide. The presence of CXCR4 receptors in these cells was determined by RT-PCR, Western blot (WB), and immunohistochemical analyses. The apoptotic effect of Nef-M1 was assessed by terminal transferase dUTP nick-end labeling (TUNEl). WBs was used to assess caspase 3 activation. BC xenografts grown in SCID mice were evaluated for the presence of CXCR4 and for their metastatic potential. CXCR4 was presented in MDA-MB-231, MCF 7, and DU 4475 BC cells but not in MDA-MB-468 BC or HME cells. Cells expressing CXCR4 and treated with Nef-M1 peptide or the Nef protein had higher rates of apoptosis than untreated cells. Caspase-3 activation increased in MDA-MB 231 cells treated with the Nef protein, the Nef 41 - 60 peptide, or Nef-M1. Nef-M1, administered to mice starting at the time of xenograft implantation, inhibited growth of primary tumors and metastatic spread. Untreated mice developed diffuse intraperitoneal metastases. We conclude that, in BCs, Nef-M1, through interaction with CXCR4, inhibits primary tumor growth and metastasis by causing apoptosis.

Since 2019 humanity has been subjected to the perturbations of pandemic,economic disruption,war,civil unrest and changes in whole-Earth dynamics associated with a human-induced *** perturbation is like a wave-front breaking on the shore of our historical ways of thinking and acting,increasingly unfit for our human *** challenge to humanity is not *** 1970 the French term‘problematique’was coined to refer to a set of 49 interrelated global problems;the classic description of wicked and tame problems was published soon after,yet little progress has been made towards answering the question:what purposeful action will aid human flourishing,create and sustain a viable space for humanity,in our ongoing co-evolution with the Anthropocene-Biosphere?A case for innovation in our ways of knowing and doing is made based on arguments that our social world is constrained by:(i)explanations we accept that are no longer relevant to our circumstances;(ii)outdated historical institutions(in the institutional economics sense)that contribute as social technologies to a broader human created and ungoverned technosphere;(iii)inadequate theory-informed practices,or praxis,and(iv)governance-systems no longer adequate for *** of knowledge science and systems science are urged to act reflexively to critically evaluate the traditions-of-understanding out of which they think and act.

Assuming the initial measure W_0 has a finite positive moment, we determine the long-time asymptotic of arbitrary order of W_t(f). In particular, it is shown that the local behavior of Wt in long-time is completely determined by the asymptotic of the total mass W_t(1), a global characteristic.

We used a thermally reversible hybrid gel made of billions of physically jam-packed swollen thermally sensitivepoly(N-isopropyl-acrylamide) chemical microgels. laser light scattering study on a series of such hybrid gels formed atdifferent gelling rates and temperatures revealed that the position-dependence of the scattering speckle pattern(staticnonergodicity) came from large voids formed during the sol-gel transition. With a proper preparation, such a nonergodicitycould be completely removed, indicating that the static nonergodicity generally observed in a gel is not indinsic, but comesfrom the clustering "island" structure formed during the gelation process.

Hermitian systems possess unitary ***,the Hermiticity is unnecessary for a unitary scattering although the scattering under the influence of non-Hermiticity is mostly *** we prove that the unitary scattering is protected by certain type of pseudo-Hermiticity and unaffected by the degree of *** energy conservation is violated in the scattering process and recovers after *** subsystem of the pseudo-Hermitian scattering center including only the connection sites is *** findings provide fundamental insights on the unitary scattering,pseudo-Hermiticity,and energy conservation,and are promising for light propagation,mesoscopic electron transport,and quantum interference in non-Hermitian systems.
