Oral cancer in patients younger than 45 years of age. A comparative study of ＂young＂ versus ＂old＂ patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity

Background: Oral cancer is a predominantly disease with an average age of approximately 60 years。In recent years, oral cavity cancers have increased at a younger age, especially in females who never consumed alcohol or smoked。Purpose: To provide the information of oral cancer in patients younger and older than 45 years of age and compare both groups。Methods: Patients younger and older than 45 years of age diagnosed with primary oral cancer were studied in relation to gender, tobacco and alcohol use, tumor characteristics, treatment and outcome。Results: There was no difference between "young" and "old" group considering gender,tobacco,alcohol abuse,tumor stage and outcome。However, younger age group had more incidence of tongue cancer and poor differentiated tumors than older patients (P<0.05)。Conclusions: The results suggest that younger patients exhibit similar characteristics to older oral cancer patients; however younger patients have more incidences of poor differentiated tumors and more frequency of tongue cancers。

Human papillomavirus in oral squamous cell carcinoma of a venezuelan population.

Purpose: It has been well established that tobacco and alcohol use are significant risk factors for the development of oral squamous cell carcinoma。In the last years, human papillomavirus (HPV) has been associated with the development of oral cancer。This study was performed to estimate the frequency of HPV DNA in squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) at different sites of the oral cavity and to compare the clinical behavior of HPV positive and negative tumors。Methods: Twenty seven patients diagnosed with primary oral cancer were studied in relation to tumor HPV status。Results: HPV DNA was detected in 44.4% of tumors。With respect to age, gender, tobacco and alcohol consumption, site, grade and size of the tumor, analysis of clinical data showed no difference between patients with HPV DNA in their tumors and those in which no HPV was detected。However HPV positive patients had a more incidence of lymph node metastasis (P<0.05)。Conclusions: The presence of HPV DNA is only associated with more incidence of lymph node metastasis。
