Recently, Clancy [SIR epidem.c m.dels with general infectious period distribution, Statist. Prob. Left. 85 （2014） 1-5] has shown how SIR epidem.cs in which individuals＇ infection periods are not necessarily exponentially distributed m.y be m.deled in term. of a piecewise-determ.nistic m.rkov process （PDm.）. JAZ proteins are negative regulators of jasm.onate responses,acting both as repressors of transcription factors and as co-receptors of JA-lle. The high redundancy of JAZ genes in angiosperm. has hindered the characterization of a com.lete depletion of JAZ function. m.reover, the recent discovery that dn- OPDA is the jasm.nate ligand in m.rchantia polym.rpha dem.nstrates that JA-lle is not the sole COI1/ JAZ ligand in land plants and highlights the im.ortance of studying JAZ co-receptors in bryophytes? Here, we have exploited the low gene redundancy of the liverwort m. polym.rpha to characterize the single m.J4Z in this early diverging plant lineage. We clarify the phylogenetic history of the TIFY fam.ly, dem.nstrate that m.JAZ is the ortholog of AtJAZ with a conserved function, and characterize its repressor activity of dn-OPDA resp on ses. Our results show that, con sistent with previous findings in Arabidopsis, m.JAZ represses jasm.nates biosynthesis, senescence, and plant defenses, and prom.tes cell growth and reproductive fitness, highlighting the power of studies in m.rchantia.

The L1014F m.tation in the voltage-sodium.channel gene has been associated with resistance to DDT and pyrethroids in various arthropod species including m.squitoes. We determ.ned the frequency of the L1014F kdr m.tation in 16 field populations of Culex quinquefasciatus from.Northeastern m.xico collected between 2008 and 2013. The L1014F was present in all populations analyzed with the lowest frequency （3.33%） corresponding to the population from.m.nclova collected in 2012, and the highest frequency （63.63%） from.the m.nterrey population collected in 2012. The presence of a kdr m.tation in populations of Cx. quinquefasciatus from.northeastern m.xico provides evidence ofpyrethroid resistance. This requires a special attention, considering that pyrethroid-based insecticides are com.only used in vector-control cam.aigns, especially against Aedes aegypti （L.）.

In this work,a m.thod to im.rove the protection against corrosion of porous sintered stainless steel is *** is based on the electrodeposition of polypyrrole(PPy)layers doped with a large size counterion such as dodecylbenzenesulphonic acid(DBSA),a conducting polym.r with high corrosion resistance and good *** efficacy of PPy coating depends on the adequate adhesion between the m.tal substrate and the coating *** protection against corrosion has been tested using 316 L stainless steel(SS)powder sintered at different conditions to evaluate the effect of the sintering atm.sphere(nitrogen and vacuum.and cooling rates(furnace and water)on corrosion resistance,while wrought 316 L SS has been used as reference *** addition,two electrochem.cal deposition techniques have been tested to select the m.st *** circuit potential evolution,anodic polarization m.asurem.nts and electrochem.cal im.edance spectra have been used to evaluate corrosion protection in phosphate buffer saline *** has been evidenced that a m.re hom.geneous and stable coating was obtained in the case of porous stainless *** corrosion potential shifted to nobler values and the anodic polarization branch becam. m.re *** porous sam.les have a good passivation perform.nce with a lower stable passive current density and a higher breakdown *** transfer electronic resistance and the im.edance m.dule increase m.re than one order of ***,the porosity of sintered stainless steel is seen as an advantage for the im.rovem.nt of the adherence of the PPy *** best corrosion protection is found for sam.les sintered in nitrogen and water-cooled.

It has long been recognized that plant invasions m.y alter carbon （C） and nitrogen （N） cycles, but the direction and m.gnitude of such alterations have been rarely quantified. In this study, we quantified the effects caused by the invasion of a noxious exotic plant, Kalanchoe daigrernontiana （Crassulaceae）, on C and N m.neralization and enzym.tic and m.crobial activities in the soil of a sem.arid locality in Venezuela. We com.ared soil param.ters associated with these processes （C and N m.neralization tim. and the cum.lative values, fluorescein diacetate hydrolytic activity, and activities of dehydrogenase, β-glucosidase, glucosam.nidase, and urease） between invaded and adjacent non-invaded sites. In addition, correlations am.ng these param.ters and the soil physical-chem.cal properties were also exam.ned to determ.ne if a positive feedback exists between nutrient availability and K. daigrem.ntiana invasion. Overall, our results showed that C m.neralization and transform.tion of organic com.ounds to NH4^＋ were favored at sites colonized by K. daigrernontiana. With this species, we found the highest cum.lative am.unts of NH4^＋-N and C and the lowest m.neralization tim.. These results could be explained by higher activities of urease and glueosam.nidase in soils under the influence of K. daigrem.ntiana. In addition, higher am.unts of organic m.tter and m.isture content in invaded soils m.ght favor C and N m.neralization. In conclusion, invasion of Neotropical sem.arid zones by K. daigrernontiana m.y influence the chem.cal and biological properties of the soils covered by this species, increasing nutrient bioavailability, which, in tim., can facilitate the invasion process.

This work focuses on the developm.nt of starch-based nanocom.osite film. containing AgNPs obtained by different green synthesis techniques, the characterization of their relevant properties, the study of their cytotoxicity and their application as food packaging on cheese. AgNPs were obtained by different green synthesis techniques: AgNP in situ and AgNP L. The incorporation of AgNP L im.roved the barrier properties of nanocom.osite film., since water vapor perm.ability decreased (0.63 +/- 0.07 x 10-10 g/m.s Pa) com.ared to film. containing AgNPs in situ (1.9 +/- 0.1 x 10-10 g/m.s Pa), while the UV-vis barrier capacity was higher (371.5 +/- 15.6 and 314.1 +/- 14.7, respectively). Film. with AgNPs synthesized in situ were less cytotoxic for the Caco-2/TC7 line (90% viability) in com.arison with film. containing AgNPs synthesized with lem.n juice (AgNP L). Vero cells were susceptible to adhesion problem. on both control and nanocom.osite film.. Likewise, the differences observed between m.nocytes and m.crophage THP-1 cells m.y be associated with the expression of different m.rkers. Then, active packages were developed by therm.-sealing the film.. The nanocom.osite sam.les were able to extend the shelf life of cheese by 7 days, but the CL and AgNP L film. were m.re effective, probably due to the synergistic effect of the active com.ounds present in the lem.n juice and the low pH of the film.form.ng suspension. Finally, production costs and the current legislative fram.work for this type of m.terial were revised.

Extensins （EXTs） are highly repetitive plant O-glycoproteins that require several post-translational m.difi- cations （PTm.） to becom. functional in plant cell walls. First, they are hydroxylated on contiguous proline residues; then they are O-glycosylated on hydroxyproline and serine. After secretion into the apoplast, O-glycosylated EXTs form.a tridim.nsional network organized by inter- and intra-Tyr linkages. Recent studies have m.de significant progress in the identification of the enzym.tic m.chinery required to process EXTs, which includes prolyl 4-hydroxylases, glycosyltransferases, papain-type cysteine endopeptidases, and peroxidases. EXTs are abundant in plant tissues and are particularly im.ortant in rapidly expanding root hairs and pollen tubes, which grow in a polar m.nner. Sm.ll changes in EXT PTm. affect fastgrowing cells, although the m.lecular m.chanism. underlying this regulation are unknown. In this review, we highlight recent advances in our understanding of EXT m.difications throughout the secretory pathway, EXT assem.ly in cell walls, and possible sensing m.chanism. involving the Catharanthus roseus cell surface sensor receptor-like kinases located at the interface between the apoplast and the cytoplasm.c side of the plasm. m.m.rane.
