Knowledge of Hospital Acquired Infections (HAIs) among Medical Students in a Tertiary Hospital in Jos North Local Government Area, Plateau State, Nigeria

Background: Hospital Acquired Infections (HAIs) remain a common cause of death, functional disability, emotional suffering and economic burden among hospitalized patients. Knowledge of HAIs is important in its prevention and control. This study seeks to assess the knowledge of Hospital Acquired Infections (HAIs) among medical students in a Tertiary Hospital in Jos North Local Government Area, Plateau State, Nigeria. Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study done in October 2019 among clinical medical students using a Multistage sampling technique. Data was collected using a self-administered structured questionnaire and analyzed using the IBM SPSS 20 (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences). Ethical approval was granted by Bingham University Teaching Hospital, Ethics Committee, Jos, Plateau State. Results: A total of 219 students in the clinical arm of the College of Medicine and Health Sciences were selected. A higher proportion (97.7%) of respondents knew about Hospital Acquired Infections and 85.4% knew that Hospital Acquired infections occur in the hospital, and (86.3%) considered patients contagious with half (58.9%) considered patients as the most important source of HAIs, followed by care givers (13.2%), then doctors including medical students and interns (10.0%) and lastly nurses (8.7%). The majority of respondents (70.8%) considered Surgical Wound Infections to be the most commonly occurring HAI, followed by UTIs (69.9%), RTIs (61.2%), BSIs (37.0%) and others (0.9%). The clinical thermometer was the instrument that most commonly transmits HAIs (82.6%), then followed by stethoscope (62.1%), white coats (53.9%), and blood pressure cuff (51.1%). Most respondents knew the infectious substances, like blood (96.3%), nasal discharge (82.6%), saliva (85.3%), and faeces (79.4%) transmitted HAIs, 72.6% of the respondents said that they were aware of the recommended hand washing techniques by WHO. Haematopoetic effect of methanol extract of Nigerian honey bee (Apis mellifera) propolis in mice

Objective:To investigate the haematopoetic effect of methanol extract of Nigerian honey bee propolis in ***:Fifteen white Albino mice were grouped into 3(A-C)of 5 animals *** A mice serve as control group,while groups B and C received 300 and 600 mL/kg of honey bee propolis respectively,for 21 *** haematological parameters were determined using the automated haematologic analyzer Sysmex kx21,(product of Sysmex Corporation,Japan)using standard *** data were analyzed using ANOVA and the level of significance was at P0.05)alteration to the erythrocytic indices like red blood cells,haematocrite,haemoglobin,mean corpuscular haemoglobin,mean corpuscular volume and red cell distribution width,but increase mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration in dose related *** oral toxicity showed the extract to be relatively safe at a high dose on acute ***,21-days of treatment with the extract do neither increase nor decrease the body weight of the ***:Administration of methanol extract of Nigerian honey bee propolis in mice at the doses investigated has brought about leucopoietic and thrombopoietic changes without any significant effect on red blood cells and factors that relate to it,except for the mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration.

Catatonia: Cavum Septum Pellucidum and Vergae, a Cause or a Coincidence?

Background: Many studies in the 20th century have reported an association between Schizophrenia and Catatonia. Structural brain abnormalities have also been found in many psychotic illnesses, including schizophrenia and there are findings of association of large ventricles with chronic and deteriorating psychosis. It is possible that a large ventricular system may increase the likelihood of catatonia with a chronic course. Cavum Septum Pellucidum (CSP) and Cavum Vergae (CV) are structural abnormalities that have been associated with Schizophrenia. This is a case report of the presence of persistent CSP and CV in a patient diagnosed with schizophrenia with catatonia. Conclusion: Although there are several reports of the findings of a persistent large CSP and CV in patients with Schizophrenia, it is questionable whether the CSP and CV are the cause of the Catatonia or their occurrence is a mere coincidence.

The present pandemic has posed a crisis to the economy of the world and the health ***,the race to expand research to understand some good molecular targets for vaccine and therapeutic development for SARS-CoV-2 is *** newly discovered coronavirus 2019(COVID-19)is a positive sense,single-stranded RNA,and enveloped virus,assigned to the beta CoV *** virus(SARS-CoV-2)is more infectious than the previously detected coronaviruses(MERS and SARS).Findings from many studies have revealed that S protein and RdRp are good targets for drug repositioning,novel therapeutic development(antibodies and small molecule drugs),and vaccine *** such as chloroquine,convalescent plasma,monoclonal antibodies,spike binding peptides,and small molecules could alter the ability of S protein to bind to the ACE-2 receptor,and drugs such as remdesivir(targeting SARS-CoV-2 RdRp),favipir,and emetine could prevent SASR-CoV-2 RNA *** novel vaccines such as mRNA1273(Moderna),3LNP-mRNAs(Pfizer/BioNTech),and ChAdOx1-S(University of Oxford/Astra Zeneca)targeting S protein have proven to be effective in combating the present *** exploration of the potential of S protein and RdRp is crucial in fighting the present pandemic.

Calibration of Hydrognomon Model for Simulating the Hydrology of Urban Catchment

Due to chaotic nature of flow in natural open channels and the physical processes and the unknown in a river basin variable, the parameters to be used in studying the behavior of river basin to a given rainfall data cannot be measured directly for this reason, a hydrological model was calibrated and applied to simulate the hydrology of Kaduna River (7112 sq miles) North West Nigeria. Prior to the model calibration, a sensitivity analysis of the hydrognomon model to the parameters was carried out to gain a better understanding of the correspondence between the data and the physical processes being modeled.

Climate Change Impact on Sub-Surface Hydrology of Kaduna River Catchment

This paper applied the use of a stochastic weather generator at the site of a hydrological model to simulate the impact of climate change on the sub-surface hydrological response of Kaduna River as a basis for a sustainable ground water development plan. Average time series of rainfall, temperature and gauge height observed readings were downscaled to the watershed flow volume and applied as forcing to simulate the ground water response as spatially lumped, ignoring the heterogeneous nature of the ground water aquifer. Future simulations indicate increase in base flow, ground storage and decrease soil storage throughout the summer and autumn months for the catchment.

Challenges Militating against the Effectiveness of Knowledge Management in Sustainable Land Use and Agricultural Production among Extension Workers in Sokoto State, Nigeria

The study assessed the Challenges Militating against the Effectiveness of Knowledge Management (KM) in Sustainable Land Use and Agricultural Production among Agricultural Extension Workers in Sokoto State, Nigeria. A sample size of 188 was drawn using well-structured questionnaires and was used for the study. Descriptive statistics and logit model were as tools of data analysis. The result of the study indicated that 53.7% of the extension Workers highlighted that lack of top Management support as major challenges for effectiveness of knowledge management among agricultural extension workers. The result of the logit model indicated that marital status, education level, experience, cosmopolitness and means of transportation had positive and significant relationship with effectiveness of Knowledge management. It was recommended therefore that Knowledge Management should be given top management support in all government establishments.

Effect of exchange blood transfusion on oxygen saturation of neonates with severe neonatal jaundice by pulse oximetry

Objective:To determine if there was any difference in SpO2 readings during exchange blood transfusion(EBT).Methods:A prospective cross-sectional study of neonates with severe neonatal jaundice requiring EBT was *** saturation was recorded before,immediately and 15 minutes after EBT by using a pulse ***:This study included 30 neonates with 20 males and 10 *** age ranged from 1 to 12 days with a mean of(5.4±2.9)***-EBT SpO2 ranged from 90%to 98%with a mean value of(94.3±2.2)%;SpO2 in the end of EBT ranged from 85%to 99%with a mean value of(94.1±3.2)%;SpO2 at 15 minutes after EBT ranged from 77%to 99%with a mean value of(94.8±4.1)%.There was no significant difference between SpO2 values at onset of EBT and either immediately or 15 minutes after EBT(P=0.770 and 0.422,respectively).SpO2 showed no significant difference between neonates who were infused with blood of different storage times(0.999)and 15 minutes after EBT(P=0.887).Besides,SpO2 values were compariable in neonates with hematocrit<45%or≥45%at the onset of EBT(P=0.284),immediately(P=0.118)and 15 minutes after EBT(P=0.868).Conclusions:EBT does not affect SpO2 in neonates.
