Diversity and species-specificity of brood pollination of leafflower trees(Phyllanthaceae:Glochidion)by leafflower moths(Lepidoptera:Epicephala)in tropical Southeast Asia(Cambodia)

Glochidion(Phyllanthaceae;leafflower trees)is a genus of trees which is widely reported to be pollinated by leafflower moths(Gracillariidae:Epicephala)in temperate and subtropical Asia,Australia,and the Pacific islands.However,the pollination ecology of Glochidion is not well described from tropical Asia,the region where it is most species-rich at both local(<9 spp.)and regional(~200 spp.)scales.Here we report investigations of pollination biology and species-specificity of five Glochidion species in tropical Southeast Asia(Cambodia).Through nocturnal observations and fruit dissections,we find that at least three and likely five Glochidion species in Cambodia are pollinated by seed-parasitic leafflower moths.We find no evidence that any of these leafflower moths are non-mutualistic parasites,despite known examples of such parasites of this mutualism elsewhere in Asia.While the presence of a single larva in a fruit results in only a fraction of seeds being consumed,the presence of more than one larva per fruit-a frequent occurrence in some species—can result in almost all seeds within the fruit being infested.Multilocus phylogenetic analysis indicates that there are five different minimally monophyletic leafflower moth clades,each of which pollinates a unique Glochidion host species.Our results indicate that in its center of diversity in tropical Asia this system is an obligate pollination mutualism as previously described at the global margins of its distribution.These findings provide insights into the processes that generate and maintain biodiversity and maintain mutualism stability in plant-insect interactions in this biodiversity hotspot.

With the long-term support of every friend and contributor,Zoological Research(ZR)has continued to move forward over the past year,with impressive achievements.Notably,ZR attained an impact factor of 4.56(JCR Q1)and CiteScore of 4.6 in mid-2021,thus ranking in the top five of the 175 SCI journals within the Zoology category.In November 2021,our Citescore reached 5.6,and we expect a higher impact factor in 2022 than in 2021.Although we are not driven by chasing these scores,the increase in these metrics does reflect an elevation in the quality of submissions and publications,as well as the march towards our original aspiration when launching this journal(yao et al.,2019).The current areas of focus of ZR(i.e.,primate and animal models;animal diversity and evolution;conservation&utilization of animal resources)are not only tightly connected to our host-the Kunming Institute of Zoology,which has grown and evolved into“a comprehensive research institution renowned for its remarkable achievements in evolutionary mechanisms of animal biodiversity,animal resources protection,and sustainable utilization”(yao&Shen,2019)-but also represent the very frontiers of zoology.

Aircraft parameter estimation using a stacked long short-term memory network and Levenberg-Marquardt method

To effectively estimate the unknown aerodynamic parameters from the aircraft’s flight data,this paper proposes a novel aerodynamic parameter estimation method incorporating a stacked Long Short-Term Memory(LSTM)network model and the Levenberg-Marquardt(LM)method.The stacked LSTM network model was designed to realize the aircraft dynamics modeling by utilizing a frame of nonlinear functional mapping based entirely on the measured input-output data of the aircraft system without requiring explicit postulation of the dynamics.The LM method combines the already-trained LSTM network model to optimize the unknown aerodynamic parameters.The proposed method is applied by using the real flight data,generated by ATTAS aircraft and a bio-inspired morphing Unmanned Aerial Vehicle(UAV).The investigation reveals that for the two different flight data,the designed stacked LSTM network structure can maintain the efficacy of the network prediction capability only by appropriately adjusting the dropout rates of its hidden layers without changing other network parameters(i.e.,the initial weights,initial biases,number of hidden cells,time-steps,learning rate,and number of training iterations).Besides,the proposed method’s effectiveness and potential are demonstrated by comparing the estimated results of the ATTAS aircraft or the bio-inspired morphing UAV with the corresponding reference values or wind-tunnel results.

Creating animal models, why not use the Chinese tree shrew ( Tupaia belangeri chinensis)？

The Chinese tree shrew （Tupaia belangeri chinensis） a squirrel-like and rat-sized mammal, has a wide distribution in Southeast Asia, South and Southwest China and has many unique characteristics that make it suitable for use as an experimental animal. There have been many studies using the tree shrew （Tupaia belangeri） aimed at increasing our understanding of fundamental biological mechanisms and for the modeling of human diseases and therapeutic responses. The recent release of a publicly available annotated genome sequence of the Chinese tree shrew and its genome database （***） has offered a solid base from which it is possible to elucidate the basic biological properties and create animal models using this species. The extensive characterization of key factors and signaling pathways in the immune and nervous systems has shown that tree shrews possess both conserved and unique features relative to primates. Hitherto, the tree shrew has been successfully used to create animal models for myopia, depression, breast cancer, alcohol-induced or non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases, herpes simplex virus type 1 （HSV-1） and hepatitis C virus （HCV） infections, to name a few. The recent successful genetic manipulation of the tree shrew has opened a new avenue for the wider usage of this animal in biomedical research. In this opinion paper, I attempt to summarize the recent research advances that have used the Chinese tree shrew, with a focus on the new knowledge obtained by using the biological properties identified using the tree shrew genome, a proposal for the genome-based approach for creating animal models, and the genetic manipulation of the tree shrew. With more studies using this species and the application of cutting-edge gene editing techniques, the tree shrew will continue to be under the spot light as a viable animal model for investigating the basis of many different human diseases.

A Non-Parametric Scheme for Identifying Data Characteristic Based on Curve Similarity Matching

For accurately identifying the distribution charac-teristic of Gaussian-like noises in unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV)state estimation,this paper proposes a non-parametric scheme based on curve similarity matching.In the framework of the pro-posed scheme,a Parzen window(kernel density estimation,KDE)method on sliding window technology is applied for roughly esti-mating the sample probability density,a precise data probability density function(PDF)model is constructed with the least square method on K-fold cross validation,and the testing result based on evaluation method is obtained based on some data characteristic analyses of curve shape,abruptness and symmetry.Some com-parison simulations with classical methods and UAV flight exper-iment shows that the proposed scheme has higher recognition accuracy than classical methods for some kinds of Gaussian-like data,which provides better reference for the design of Kalman filter(KF)in complex water environment.

Effective E.coli inactivation of core-shell ZnO@ZIF-8 photocatalysis under visible light synergize with peroxymonosulfate:Efficiency and mechanism

How to utilize inexhaustible solar light as a means of disinfection technology for its cheap and green remains a challenge.In this work,core-shell ZnO@ZIF-8 was synthesized and used for bacterial inactivation synergizing with peroxymonosulfate(PMS)under visible light irradiation.It took 50 min to achieve thorough sterilization for 7.5-log Escherichia coli(E.coli)cells in vis/PMS/ZnO@ZIF-8 system,compared with that 4.5-log reduction completed in vis/PMS/ZnO system under the same conditions.The enhanced photocatalytic disinfection mechanisms of fabricated ZnO@ZIF-8 were investigated by UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra,electrochemical impedance spectra and Mott-Schottky plots.The promoted bactericidal efficiency was attributed to higher charge-separation efficiency and stronger oxidation ability of photo-generated holes.Moreover,it was found that^(1)O_(2)and·OH induced bacterial cell lesion process,and the former was the main active species.The external reactive oxygen species(ROS)caused a series of cell wall damage,intercellular ROS up-regulation and genome DNA unwinding,finally resulted in irreversible bacterial death.A two-route mechanism in vis/PMS/ZnO@ZIF-8 system was proposed,in which the generation of^(1)O_(2)was supposed as the product of the oxygen oxidation of photo-generated holes and PMS dissociation.Our work is expected to provide advanced information about a low-cost water disinfection technology of visible light photocatalysis.

We present a novel broadband circularly polarized(CP)antenna with filtering effect for X-and Kuband satellite wireless communication.The structure comprises a driven layer(also a filtering layer)and a stacked layer(also a CP layer).The bandpass filtering response consists of two radiation nulls,which is the combined effect of a substrate integrated waveguide(SIW)cavity-backed aperture and embedded driven patch.

Least-squares reverse-time migration(LSRTM) formulates reverse-time migration(RTM) in the leastsquares inversion framework to obtain the optimal reflectivity image. It can generate images with more accurate amplitudes, higher resolution, and fewer artifacts than RTM. However, three problems still exist:(1) inversion can be dominated by strong events in the residual;(2) low-wavenumber artifacts in the gradient affect convergence speed and imaging results;(3) high-wavenumber noise is also amplified as iteration increases. To solve these three problems, we have improved LSRTM: firstly, we use Hubernorm as the objective function to emphasize the weak reflectors during the inversion;secondly, we adapt the de-primary imaging condition to remove the low-wavenumber artifacts above strong reflectors as well as the false high-wavenumber reflectors in the gradient;thirdly, we apply the L1-norm sparse constraint in the curvelet-domain as the regularization term to suppress the high-wavenumber migration noise. As the new inversion objective function contains the non-smooth L1-norm, we use a modified iterative soft thresholding(IST) method to update along the Polak-Ribie re conjugate-gradient direction by using a preconditioned non-linear conjugate-gradient(PNCG) method. The numerical examples,especially the Sigsbee2 A model, demonstrate that the Huber inversion-based RTM can generate highquality images by mitigating migration artifacts and improving the contribution of weak reflection events.
