Olfaction is one of our 5 main qualitative sensory abilities. In this review, we have examined the physiology of olfaction from the olfactory receptor to the brain. Through analyzing the physiology of olfaction, we have found that the biochemistry of olfactory nerve stimulation is unique from that of other similar pathways. Upon receiving large amounts of input from the olfactory nerve, the olfactory bulb, followed by several layers of centrifugal and centripetal processing in the brain, has to sort the information from the input as well as integrate it with other inputs from the brain to develop a coherent understanding of the input. We then examined the implications of olfaction in the military, the practical applications of electronic noses and problems associated with injury to olfaction that could affect compensation and combat worthiness of a soldier following injury. In the military, olfaction can allow the army to perform at its best through 4 main methods, namely ensuring olfaction is consistent with other dimensions of perception(ensuring optimal olfaction ability in all soldiers in combat), understanding the impact of different common combat environments on the sense of smell, utilizing odor as a defense mechanism and using olfactory aids when necessary. Electronic noses are olfactory aids that have a large potential in the military ranging from saving lives through the detection of explosives to potential methods for improving combustion efficiency. There are several problems associated with injury to olfaction that should be considered when deciding on compensation and combat worthiness of the soldier following an injury.

The position control system of an electro-hydraulic actuator system （EHAS） is investigated in this paper. The EHAS is developed by taking into consideration the nonlinearities of the system： the friction and the internal leakage. A variable load that simulates a realistic load in robotic excavator is taken as the trajectory reference. A method of control strategy that is implemented by employing a fuzzy logic controller （FLC） whose parameters are optimized using particle swarm optimization （PSO） is proposed. The scaling factors of the fuzzy inference system are tuned to obtain the optimal values which yield the best system performance. The simulation results show that the FLC is able to track the trajectory reference accurately for a range of values of orifice opening. Beyond that range, the orifice opening may introduce chattering, which the FLC alone is not sufficient to overcome. The PSO optimized FLC can reduce the chattering significantly. This result justifies the implementation of the proposed method in position control of EHAS.

To study the effects of Hydroxyapatite(HA) nanoparticles on devitrification in cryoprotectant solutions,the crystallization of glycerol(60%,w/w) and PEG-600(50%,w/w) solutions with HA nanoparticles of different sizes(20 nm、 40 nm、60 nm)and different concentrations(0.1%、 0.5%)during warming were investigated by using differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) combined with *** results showed that the presence of nanoparticles does not change the glass transition temperatures and melting temperatures of quenched solutions,but affects the behavior of devitrification and recrystallization upon *** morphologies of glycerol and PEG-600 solutions are dendritic and spheric respectively,and the structures are not changed by adding *** ice fraction of glycerol solution containing 0.1%60nm HA nanoparticles diminished significantly when comparing to the control *** ice fractions of PEG-600 solutions increased dramatically between-64℃ and-54℃.The findings have significant implications for biomaterial cryopreservation.

尼泊尔境内地质条件复杂,油气勘探程度和投入及油气地质认识程度很低,但其低喜马拉雅带及以南地区具丰富的油气显示。为了进一步探讨尼泊尔山前带的油气勘探潜力,结合前人研究成果及新认识,对尼泊尔低喜马拉雅带及以南的区域油气地质特征进行了梳理、总结与分析。结果表明,尼泊尔低喜马拉雅带及以南发育多套潜在的规模性烃源岩,具有潜在的生、储、盖组合;新构造运动是控制区域性油气运移与调整成藏的关键;丰富的地表油气显示及静态石油地质条件预示着尼泊尔低喜马拉雅带及以南,尤其是MBT以南具有良好的油气远景与勘探潜力。

Factors affecting residual exotropia after two muscle surgery for intermittent exotropia

AIM： To study the factors affecting residual exotropia（〉10 PD） at 4-6wk postoperative visit following two rectus muscle surgery for intermittent exotropia [bilateral lateral rectus（LR） recession or unilateral recess resect procedure].METHODS： A retrospective chart review of patients with intermittent exotropia ≤50 PD who underwent two rectus muscle surgery in between Jan. 2011 to Dec. 2013 was performed. Possible factors were compared between patients with residual exotropia（〉10 PD） and successful outcome（within 10 PD of orthotropia） at the 4-6wk postoperative visit. Effect/dose ratio was calculated by dividing the effect of surgery by the total amount（mm） of muscle surgery ***： One hundred and fifty-seven patients with mean age of 14y（range 3-53y） were included. Twentyseven patients（17.2%） had residual exotropia at 4-6wk postoperative follow up. Age at surgery（P=0.009） and preoperative deviation for distance（P≤0.001） and near（P=0.001） were identified as important predictors of unsuccessful outcome. The occurrence of residual exotropia was not affected by amblyopia, anisometropia, lateral incomitance, pattern deviation, vertical deviation, type of exotropia or type of surgery done（recess-resect or bilateral LR recession）. The effect/dose ratio was more in deviations 〉40 PD in the both recess-resect and bilateral LR recession type of surgery. The effect/dose ratio was less in patients with residual exotropia as compared to the successful outcome group（1.36 PD/mm vs 2.05 PD/mm in the bilateral LR recession surgery and 1.93 PD/mm vs 2.63 PD/mm in the unilateral recess-resect surgery）.CONCLUSION： Residual exotropia is seen in 17% of patients after two muscle surgery for intermittent exotropia. Patients with older age and larger preoperative deviation have greater chances of developing failure of two muscle strabismus surgery for intermittent exotropia.

In this paper we analyzed the effects of space and temperature dependent intemal heat generation/absorption （non-uniform heat source/sink） on magnetohydrodynamic boundary layer flow of water based nanofluid over a stretching sheet with different nanoparticles. The flow is generated due to linear stretching of the sheet and influenced by uniform magnetic field, which is applied normally to the stretching sheet. A scaling group of transformation is used to reduce the governing momentum and energy equations into non-linear ordinary differential equations. The resulting differential equations are solved analytically using hypergeometric functions and numerically by the fourth order Runge-Kutta method with shooting technique. The influence of nanoparticle volume fraction, magnetic field, Prandtl number, non uniform heat source/sink, local skin friction coefficient and reduced Nusselt number are investigated for different nanoparticles.
