Different tillage practices are used fo. maize cro.ping in Libya. Yet, the effects o. these practices o. so.l physical pro.erties and maize gro.th and yield are no. kno.n. The o.jective o. this study was to.evaluate the effect o. different tillage practices o. so.l physical pro.erties and maize gro.th and yield in Libya. A field experiment was co.ducted in 2009 and repeated in 2010 using three tillage practices (co.ventio.al tillage (CT), ridge tillage (RT) and zero.tillage (ZT)). Data abo.t so.l physical pro.erties (penetratio. resistance (PR), bulk density (BD), to.al po.o.ity (TP) and saturated hydraulic co.ductivity (Ks)) acro.s so.l depths, maize gro.th co.po.ents (plant height, number o. leaves, leaf area index and dry ro.t weight) at 60, 75 and 125 days after planting, and maize yield (grain and sto.er) at harvest were co.lected and statistically analyzed in bo.h years. To.evaluate the effects o. the tillage practices eco.o.ically, the tillage o.eratio. co.t and pro.uctio. co.t were calculated. The results sho.ed that at the surface layer (0 - 20 cm), CT had lo.er PR and lo.er BD, but higher TP and Ks co.pared to.RT and ZT. At 20 - 40 cm and 40 - 60 cm depths, the lo.er PR and PD and higher TP and Ks were under ZT and RT co.pared to.CT. All maize gro.th parameters at different times were highest fo. CT fo.lo.ed by RT and lo.est fo. ZT. The CT practice presented the highest grain and sto.er yield fo.lo.ed by RT and ZT. Ho.ever, harvest index was higher where ZT was applied. While tillage o.eratio. co.ts were the highest fo. CT fo.lo.ed by RT and ZT, the pro.uctio. co.ts were the highest fo. ZT fo.lo.ed by RT and CT. In general, the CT practice pro.uced higher maize gro.th and yield, lo.er pro.uctio. co.t, and higher tillage o.eratio. co.t than tho.e are planted using RT and ZT practices.
