A theoretical study of hydride bonds formed between beryllium hydride and alkaline earth metal cations is presented. B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) calculations were used for determining the optimized geometries of the BeH2...K+, BeH2...Ca+2, BeH2...K+...BeH2, and BeH2...Ca+2...BeH2 hydride-bonded complexes, where among them the first are binaries, whereas the last ones are ternaries with the calcium (Ca+2) and potassium (K+) ions mediating the interactions with the beryllium hydride (BeH2). A detailed structural analysis were performed, by which the yielded profiles are in good agreement with results of the infrared vibrational spectrum, mainly in regards to the existence of red-shifted modes followed by enlarged absorption intensity ratios of the B-H bonds of the binary complexes. The capability of either donating or accepting of protons among BeH2, K+, and Ca+2, is currently treated in conformity with Lewis’s acid/base theory, but is also interpreted through the application of the Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM), whose formalism consents in the molecular modeling of concentrations and depletions of charge density ruled by the Laplacian shapes, charge transference fluxes, as well as by the local virial theorem of the electronic density with quantification of the kinetic and potential energies along the bonds and interactions.

Canine hypoadrenocorticism may be characterized by insufficiency of adrenocortical hormonal secretion of glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids. Clinical signs are nonspecific such as dehydration, hypovolemic shock, bradycardia, hypotension, emesis, diarrhea, among other clinical and laboratory changes, and can mimic other diseases, and because of this, the disease can go unnoticed by the veterinarian, increasing the mortality and morbidity of patients seen in emergency consultations. Despite being of low occurrence, hypoadrenocorticism is often underdiagnosed, and should be considered in the differential diagnosis in the presence of gastrointestinal clinical signs or hypovolemic shock, and low Sodium:Potassium ratio. The definitive diagnosis is based on the dosage of cortisol before and after the application of the adrenocorticotrophic hormone. Acute treatment consists of patient stabilization, and chronic includes replacement of glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids. Prognosis is usually favorable if the diagnosis is early and the correct treatment is performed. This article is a review focusing on clinical signs, laboratory findings, diagnosis and treatment on canine hypoadrenocorticism, to increase the knowledge about the disease to veterinarians.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease disseminated through the centuries in the whole world which causes symptoms that go from self-limited diseases to hemorrhagic manifestations and organ failure, including acute kidney injury(AKI), composing the severe disease known as the Weil's syndrome. Mortality rates varies according to the clinical presentation and usually increases when kidney injury is present, and is even higher in the setting of pulmonary hemorrhage. There are recent advances in the search for novel biomarkers of renal involvement and early detection of AKI in leptospirosis, as well as in its pathophysiology. We review in this article the clinical aspects of leptospirosis-associated AKI and the perspectives for future research.

Pattern of Alcohol Consumption in Registered Users of a Family Health Unit

The alcohol abuse is associated with a wide range of social, health and legal problems to analyze the pattern of alcohol consumption of users of a Family Health Unit. A descriptive, cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach, conducted with 207 users of a Family Health Unit who responded the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test. Data were analyzed with the aid of the STATA/SE 12.0 software. To analyze the association of the variables, the chi-square and Fisher’s exact test were used. Of the participants, 40.6% presented abusive consumption of alcohol, which is strongly associated to the male sex, single, between 18 and 30 years of age, who have no religion and some sort of occupation. There was no relation with monthly income and education. Screening and prevention programs to alcohol abuse are important for the most vulnerable group in the primary health care.

The Education for Health at PET Work Program (PET-Health) is focused on education as a pre-supposition. Actions are directed towards to the integration of service-learning and community. Interdisciplinary principle is directed from fusion of work of graduate students, academics and professionals of health services for the benefit of strengthening primary care and health surveillance. This work aimed to carry out educational activities with Community Health Agents (ACS) of the health facilities of PET-health, with the theme of Chagas disease. This descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out from January to May 2013, and the sample consisted of 25 active ACS in six Basic Health Units in the city of Petrolina, Brazil. In spite of actuation of ACS in primary care for over 10 years, a limited knowledge has been developed about this pathology. The health education workshops developed by the PET group clarified the ACS on Chagas disease allowing them to have an expansion of knowledge about the vector, habitat Barber, transmission, clinical manifestations… After the workshop, it was found that the ACS expanded their knowledge about the disease cycle, expanding the possibilities for action in the prevention of this pathology in their respective coverage areas. This work shows an important form of integration between education, service and community that can govern the new direction of health education.

Aminoguanidine hydrazones (AGHs) are a class of compounds that have interesting pharmacological activities. They are derived from the same chemical group as aminoguanidine, so it has mixed properties (receptor and donor) in the formation of hydrogen bonds. Its anticancer agent properties were recently highlighted, but the molecules of this class have solubility in aqueous solutions that can be considered low. The identification of this class, by a simple, sensitive and low-cost technique, such as electrochemistry, which also allows the evaluation of its solubilization process through agents such as PAMAM dendrimer is the main objective of the work described here. The electrochemical response of the LQM10 (AGH derivative) was evaluated, as well as its behavior in different electrochemical sensors. Electrochemical experiments were performed in buffered (phosphate at pH 7.02 and acetate at 4.5). LQM10 has a reversible oxidation peak with a potential of +0.22 V. It was efficiently detected in different electrodes tested (glass carbon/CNT, glass carbon/CNT/PAMAM), which proves the viability of the electrodes for various analyses and has the determination of the apparent constant association, indicating its interaction with the analysis that is higher in the presence of the PAMAM encapsulating agent. This was corroborated by the results for the modified gold electrode with MUA and PAMAM. The sum of the results shows the possibility of electrochemically evaluating the Aminoguanidine hydrazone derivative, the viability of electrodes employed and the greater solubilization of LQM10 in the presence of the PAMAM dendrimer.

The aim of the present study was to implant an efficient strategy for controlling the level of the effluent-oily foam interface in a DAF (dissolved air flotation) chamber of a pilot-scale prototype. DAF has been successfully used in the treatment of oily water, which is one of the main environmental problems in different industrial facilities. Along with important operational parameters, such as microbubble size and flow rate, the control strategy for the automation of a DAF chamber may be an important tool for increasing efficiency. Controlling the level was the strategy chosen to enhance the separation efficiency in a pilot-scale DAF prototype, with monitoring performed using a computational program in LabVIEW (laboratory virtual instrument engineering workbench). The findings demonstrate that it is possible to maintain the level of the fluid at a reference value established by the operator using the software program through the application of classic proportional integral derivative controllers. Using this control tool, the efficiency of water-oil separation in the pilot flotation chamber prototype was increased to nearly 98%.

Phenolic compounds from Dipteryx alata Vogel were assayed against the in vitro neurotoxic effect induced by Bothrops jararacussu (Bjssu) venom. Mutagenicity was assessed by the Ames test using Salmonella typhimurium strains TA98, TA97a, TA100, and TA102, in experiments with and without metabolic activation. Anti-bothropic activity was obtained by using mouse phrenic nerve-diaphragm (PND) preparation and myographic technique. Control experiments with physiological Tyrode solution were used for keeping the PND preparations alive (n = 4). Concentrations of phe-nolic compounds were as follow: protocatechuic and vanillic acids (200 μg/mL, n = 4), vanillin (50 μg/mL, n = 4). These compounds were used alone or pre-incubated with the venom (40 μg/mL), 30 min prior the addition to the organ bath (n = 4). Phenolic compounds significantly inhibited the neuromuscular blockade of Bjssu in the following order of potency: vanillic acid > protocatechuic = vanillin. Vanillic acid added 10 min after the Bjssu venom was also able to avoid the venomblockade evolution. The mutagenicity assay indicated that all phytochemicals were unable to in-crease the number of revertants, demonstrating the absence of mutagenic activity. This study demonstrated both the safety and therapeutical potential of the three phenolic compounds as novel complementary anti-bothropic agents.
