Topical Application of Cudrania tricuspidata Stem Extract Inhibits Atopic Dermatitis-Like Skin Lesions in an NC/Nga Mouse Model: An Experimental Animal Study

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by elevated immunoglobulin E (IgE), mast cell infiltration and skin lesions including pruritus, erythema and eczema. Cudrania tricuspidata extracts have been clinically administered for a long time in the East Asia including Korean and China as a home-remedy to diminish the inflammation of gastritis and hepatitis. To examine whether it works on AD or not, an AD-like animal model was experimented in this study. AD was induced by applying Dermatophagoides farinae (D. farinae) extract to the backs of 9-week old NC/Nga mice for 21 days. Following this, an ethanol extract of C. tricuspidata stems (EECT) was applied topically for 14 days to the sensitized skin, while distilled water was used as a control (EECT0 mice). Anti-AD effects of EECT were evaluated using scores for AD-like skin lesions, serum IgE levels and mast cell counts in the skin dermal layers to assess inflammation. Topically applied ethanol extract of Cudrania tricuspidata stems (EECT 7.5, 25 and 75 mg/mL) markedly reduced AD-like skin lesions after 4 days (by 30.1%, 31.4% and 38.5%, respectively) and also after 14 days (by 63.6%, 66.1% and 49.6%, respectively), while distilled water improved AD by 17.8% and 38.7%, respectively (p D. farinae extract (p = 0.003) and EECT attenuated the mast cell overproduction, and reduced mast cell degranulation markedly. Attenuation was most obvious in the early stage of EECT treatment when the AD was most acute.

CorylusmandshuricaMaxim .&Rupr.和C .sieboldianaBlume在中国和俄罗斯一直被处理为独立的种。本文对来自不同标本室的这两个种的腊叶标本及野外采集的大量叶片进行了形态学分析 ,以确定形态分化是否足够成为建立种的依据。对采自中国、韩国和日本覆盖两个种分布区的 1 5 3份标本的 1 8个形态学性状进行了统计 ,以构建数据矩阵用于主成分分析。结果表明 ,包含C .sieboldiana复合体的数据单位 (entities)在所有的形态学性状上均呈现出广泛的重叠区域。叶片和果实性状分析结果表明类群间缺乏分异性。基于形态学性状不足以把C .mandshurica从C .sieboldiana中分离出去 ,并给予种的等级 ,也就是说这两个类群在形态上没有完全分化 ,而且它们的分布区也是相连的。因此 ,应该把C .mandshurica作为C .sieboldiana的种下分类群处理。C .sieboldiana在韩国南部和日本的具短总苞的植物常常被处理为独立的种或变种 ,但实际上应该作为C .sieboldiana内的变型处理 ,因为总苞性状高度变异 ,即使在同一个体上也是如此。

Differences in Skin Properties of Korean Women at the Initial Aging Phase

Many studies on aging have focused on evaluating differences between older and younger people, but only a few have focused on differences in skin properties among subjects from the same age group according to their skin aging status. In this study, we evaluated the facial skin condition and life style factors in 110 Korean women aged 25 to 35 in an attempt to evaluate factors which may affect the skin aging status in the initial aging phase. The facial skin condition of 110 healthy Korean women was assessed over two successive 6-month periods, summer and winter. Using clinical assessments including aging, wrinkles and skin’s elasticity values, the subjects were divided into 7 groups. Then, various facial skin conditions and life style factors were examined between a severe aging group and mild aging group. In the severe aging group, the mean value pH was lower and the mean value of water content was slightly lower than that of women in the mild aging group. Also, the seasonal site variation in water content and sebum secretion level were significantly higher in the severe aging group than in the mild aging group. Topical sunscreen using percentage was not significantly different between the two groups. However, the number of cosmetic subject use was slightly higher in the mild aging group than in the severe aging group. The study suggested that there were several differences in skin characteristics between women in the severe aging group and in the mild aging group at the initial aging phase. Seasonal site variation between cheek and forehead was the most dominant differences. We also considered that life style factors such as cosmetic use could affect skin aging status.

Anti-adipogenic effects of extracts of Ficus deitoidea var. deltoidea and var. angustifolia on 3T3-L1 adipocytes

Objective： This study examined the anti-adipogenic effects of extracts of Ficus deltoidea var. deltoidia and var. angustifolia, a natural slimming aid, on 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Methods： Methanol and water extracts of leaves of the F. deltoidea varieties were analyzed to determine their total flavonoid content （TFC） and total phenolic content （TPC）, respectively. The study was initiated by determining the maximum non-toxic dose （MNTD） of the methanol and water extracts for 3T3-L1 preadipocytes. Possible anti-adipogenic effects were then examined by treating 2-d post confluent 3T3-L1 preadipocytes with either methanol extract or water extract at MNTD and half MNTD （1/2MNTD）, after which the preadipocytces were induced to form mature adipocytes. Visualisation and quantification of lipid content in mature adipocytes were carried out through oil red O staining and measurement of optical density （OD） at 520 nm, respec- tively. Results： The TFCs of the methanol extracts were 1.36 and 1.97 g quercetin equivalents （QE）/100 g dry weight （DW）, while the TPCs of the water extracts were 5.61 and 2.73 g gallic acid equivalents （gae）/100 g DW for var. deltoidea and var. angustilofia, respectively. The MNTDs determined for methanol and water extracts were （300.0±28.3） and （225.0±21.2） μg/ml, respectively, for var. deltoidea, while much lower MNTDs [（60.0±2.0） IJg/ml for methanol extracts and （8.0＋1.0） μg/ml for water extracts] were recorded for var. angustifolia. Studies revealed that the methanol extracts of both varieties and the water extracts of var. angustifolia at either MNTD or 1/2MNTD significantly inhibited the maturation of preadipocytes. Conclusions： The inhibition of the formation of mature adipocytes indicated that leaf extracts of F. deltoidea could have potential anti-obesity effects.
