Experimental and computational study of smoke dynamics from multiple fire sources inside a large-volume building

Fire in large-volume buildings poses separate and distinct challenges from compartmented *** particular,the risk it poses on life safety is mostly due to the smoke it produces,its effects on the evacuation process,and how it can affect the firefighters when they approach the building to fight the fire and rescue the *** is why smoke control in large-volume enclosures is of utter importance for life safety,property protection and business *** research presents an experimental and numerical study of the smoke dynamics from four fire sources(combined heat release rate of 5.2 MW)with different ignition times and under transient ventilation conditions,inside a 20 m high cubic *** measurements in the plume and close to the walls have been recorded using 59 *** data was used in the determination of the smoke layer interface height,with the least-square and the N-Percent *** show that significantly worse conditions are induced by multiple sources than those in a single fire of equal *** results have been obtained using the computational fluid dynamics code FDS(Fire Dynamics Simulator,v6.7.1).The comparison shows that in the far field the temperature predictions are accurate inside the smoke layer(10 m and 15 m)with discrepancies lower than 10%,whereas higher significant discrepancies were observed at the smoke layer interface,i.e.5 m high,with discrepancies up to 20%.Furthermore,a grid analysis has been performed showing that grid resolutions,D*/δ,based on the global HRR of the fire might be sufficient to predict the fire induced conditions far from the *** analysis confirmed the applicability of FDS to the assessment of the smoke dynamics under complex fire conditions away from ***,the present work shows the importance of considering fires with multiple sources due to the faster smoke production compared with single fires.

A perspective on carbon materials for future energy application

Nanocarbon materials play a critical role in the development of new or improved technologies and devices for sustainable production and use of renewable energy. This perspective paper defines some of the trends and outlooks in this exciting area, with the effort of evidencing some of the possibilities offered from the growing level of knowledge, as testified from the exponentially rising number of publications, and putting bases for a more rational design of these nanomaterials. The basic members of the new carbon family are fullerene, graphene, and carbon nanotube. Derived from them are carbon quantum dots, nanohorn, nanofiber, nano ribbon, nanocapsulate, nanocage and other nanomorphologies. Second generation nanocarbons are those which have been modified by surface functionalization or doping with heteroatoms to create specific tailored properties. The third generation of nanocarbons is the nanoarchitectured supramolecular hybrids or composites of the first and second genera- tion nanocarbons, or with organic or inorganic species. The advantages of the new carbon materials, relating to the field of sustainable energy, are discussed, evidencing the unique properties that they offer for developing next generation solar devices and energy storage solutions.

Pre-illness changes in dietary habits and diet as a risk factor for inflammatory bowel disease: A case-control study

AIM: To evaluate whether symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), before diagnosis modify dietary habits, and to investigate the pre-illness diet in patients with recent IBD in comparison with an age-matched healthy control group. METHODS: Overall, 83 new cases of IBD (41 ulcerative colitis, 42 Crohn's disease) and 160 healthy controls were studied. Portions per week of 34 foods and beverages before onset of symptoms were recorded using a validated questionnaire. Duration of symptoms before IBD diagnosis, presence of specific symptoms and their impact on subjective changes in usual dietary habits were also recorded. The association between diet and IBD was investigated by multiple logistic regression and dietary patterns were assessed by factor analysis. RESULTS: Changes in dietary habits, due to the presence of symptoms, were reported by 38.6% of patients and were not significantly related to specific symptoms, rather to long duration of symptoms, only in Crohn's disease patients. In IBD patients who did not change dietary habits, moderate and high consumption of margarine (OR = 11.8 and OR = 21.37) was associated with ulcerative colitis, whilst high consumption of red meat (OR = 7.8) and high intake of cheese were associated with Crohn's disease. CONCLUSION: More than one third of IBD patients change dietary habits before diagnosis. Margarine, red meat and cheese increase the risk of ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease.

Co-seismic slip distribution of the 2011 Tohoku(MW 9.0)earthquake inverted from GPS and space-borne gravimetric data

Data obtained by GRACE(Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment) have been used to invert for the seismic source parameters of megathrust earthquakes under the assumption of either uniform slip over an entire fault or a point-like seismic ***, we further extend the inversion of GRACE long-wavelength gravity changes to heterogeneous slip distributions during the 2011 Tohoku earthquake using three fault models:(Ⅰ) a constant-strike and constant-dip fault,(Ⅱ) a variable dip fault, and(Ⅲ) a realistically varying strike fault. By removing the post-seismic signal from the time series, and taking the effect of ocean water redistribution into account, we invert for slip models I, II, and III using co-seismic gravity changes measured by GRACE, de-striped by DDK3 decorrelation filter. The total seismic moments of our slip models, with respective values of 4.9×10^(22) Nm, 5.1×10^(22) Nm, and 5.0×10^(22) Nm, are smaller than those obtained by other studies relying on GRACE data. The resulting centroids are also located at greater depths(20 km, 19.8 km,and 17.4 km, respectively). By combining onshore GPS, GPS-Acoustic, and GRACE data, we obtain a jointly inverted slip model with a seismic moment of 4.8×10^(22) Nm, which is larger than the seismic moment obtained using only the GPS displacements. We show that the slip inverted from low degree space-borne gravimetric data, which contains information at the ocean region, is affected by the strike of the arcuate trench. The space-borne gravimetric data help us constrain the source parameters of a megathrust earthquake within the frame of heterogeneous slip models.

Morphological integration and functional modularity in the crocodilian skull

We explored the morphological organization of the skull within Crocodylidae,analyzing functional and phylogenetic interactions between its 2 constituent functional modules:the rostrum and the *** used geometric morphometrics to identify localized shape changes,focusing on the differences between the major clades of the crown-group Crocodylia:Alligatoridae and *** used published bite performance data to correlate rostral function with postrostral *** skull modules appear more integrated within Alligatoridae than within *** effects on shape variation are more evident in Alligatoridae than in Crocodylidae,where functional parameters concerning the rostral morphology are proportionally more important than ***-snouted species are characterized by low structural performance,which is significantly associated with a reduction of the pterygoid-quadrate cranial nipper,suggesting that the nipper is important for the ingestion of large food items in generalist *** functional association is coupled with a significant evolutionary allometry at the clade level,while Alligatoridae and Crocodylidae show different degrees of evolutionary allometry for their entire shape and *** postrostrum is more conservative than the rostrum in terms of morphospace occupation,evolutionary allometry and phylogenetic signal.

Liver transplantation for malignancy:current treatment strategies and future perspectives

In 1967,Starzl et al performed the first successful liver transplantation for a patient diagnosed with *** the following,liver transplantation was considered ideal for complete tumor resection and potential cure from primary hepatic *** reports of liver transplantation for primary and metastatic liver cancer however showed disappointing results and the strategy was soon ***1996,Mazzaferro et al introduced the Milan criteria,offering liver transplantation to patients diagnosed with limited hepatocellular *** then,liver transplantation for malignant disease is an ongoing subject of preclinical and clinical *** this context,several aspects must be considered:(1)Given the shortage of deceased-donor organs,long-term overall and disease free survival should be comparable with results obtained in patients transplanted for nonmalignant disease;(2)In this regard,living-donor liver transplantation may in selected patients help to solve the ethical dilemma of optimal individual patient treatment vs organ allocation justice;and(3)Ongoing research focusing on perioperative therapy and antiproliferative immunosuppressive regimens may further reduce tumor recurrence in patients transplanted for malignant disease and thus improve overall *** present review gives an overview of current indications and future perspectives of liver transplantation for malignant disease.

Solving Navier-Stokes with Maclaurin Series

In this paper I propose a method for founding solutions of Navier-Stokes equations. Purpose of the research is to solve equations giving form to relations between pressure, velocity and stream. Starting from the fact we do not know the form of functions we give a general representation in Maclaurin Series and prove that with reasonable values of parameters, representation holds and therefore has meaning in continuum. Then we solve the system of equations with respect to the pressure and match equations relation between parameters: matches of equations are possible because of the physical dimensions of equations. Then values of Continuity Equation are verified. The result is a polynomial finite and that coincides with the function in continuum, or is anyway one of its representation. The result under hydrostatic condition returns Stevino formula.

Transanal total mesorectal excision:Towards standardization of technique

AIM: To describe the role of Transanal total mesorectal excision(Ta TME) in minimally invasive rectal cancer surgery, to examine the differences in patient selection and in reported surgical techniques and their impactson postoperative outcomes and to discuss the future of Ta TME. METHODS: MEDLINE(Pub Med), EMBASE, and The Cochrane Library were systematically searched through the 1st of March 2015 using a predefined search strategy. RESULTS: A total of 20 studies with 323 patients were included. Most studies were single-arm prospective studies with fewer than 100 patients. Multiple transanal access platforms were used, and the laparoscopic approach was either multi- or single port. The procedure was initiated transanally or transabdominally. If a simultaneous approach with 2 operating surgeons was chosen, the operative time was significantly reduced. CONCLUSION: Ta TME was also associated with better TME specimens and a longer distal resection margin. Ta TME is thus feasible in expert hands, but the learning curve and safety profile are not well defined. Longterm follow-up regarding anal function and oncological outcomes should be performed in the future.
