The comprehension of molecular processes underlying the development and progression of flowering in plants is a hot topic,not only because that often the products of interest for human and animal nutrition are linked to the development of fruits or seeds,but also because the processes of gametes formation occurring in sexual organs are at the basis of recombination and genetic variability which constitutes the matter on which evolution acts,whether understood as natural or human *** the present study,we used an NGS approach to produce a grapevine flower transcriptome snapshot in different whorls and tissues including calyx,calyptra,filament,anther,stigma,ovary,and embryo in both pre-and post-anthesis *** investigation aimed at identifying hub genes that unequivocally distinguish the different tissues providing insights into the molecular mechanisms that are at the basis of floral whorls and tissue *** this end we have used different analytical approaches,some now consolidated in transcriptomic studies on plants,such as pairwise comparison and weighted-gene coexpression network analysis,others used mainly in studies on animals or human's genomics,such as the tau(t)analysis aimed at isolating highly and absolutely tissue-specific *** intersection of data obtained by these analyses allowed us to gradually narrow the field,providing evidence about the molecular mechanisms occurring in those whorls directly involved in reproductive processes,such as anther and stigma,and giving insights into the role of other whorls not directly related to reproduction,such as calyptra and *** believe this work could represent an important genomic resource for functional analyses of grapevine floral organ growth and fruit development shading light on molecular networks underlying grapevine reproductive organ determination.

Neuroinflammation has been proposed as a strong biological factor underlying the development of neuropsychiatric diseases.A role for dysregulation of the immune system was initially suggested in depressive disorders and subsequently extended to other illnesses,including bipolar disorder(BD).Indeed,there is growing evidence confirming the presence of a generalized pro-inflammatory state in BD patients,involving alterations in cytokine,acute-phase proteins,and complement factor secretion,white blood cell differentiation,microglial activation,arachidonic acid signaling pathways,and increased oxidative stress *** commonly used to treat BD,such as lithium,antiepileptics and antipsychotics,show some immunoregulatory activity both in vitro and in *** aim of our study was to review the role of different inflammatory mechanisms,specifically in the development of excitatory symptoms,via a systematic PubMed search of the *** the high variability of results among studies,we found evidence indicating specific alterations of the inflammatory response during manic and mixed states of *** findings may help to clarify some of the complex mechanisms underlying the development of excitatory symptoms and suggest a potential role for drugs targeting the inflammatory system as new therapeutic options.

We present a theoretical and experimental study of a plasmonic nanoelectrode architecture that is able to inject bunches of hot electrons into an aqueous *** this approach,electrons are accelerated in water by ponderomotive forces up to energies capable of exciting or ionizing water *** ability is enabled by the nanoelectrode structure(extruding out of a metal baseplate),which allows for the production of an intense plasmonic hot spot at the apex of the structure while maintaining the electrical connection to a virtually unlimited charge *** electron injection is experimentally monitored by recording the current transmitted through the water medium,whereas the electron acceleration is confirmed by observation of the bubble generation for a laser power exceeding a proper *** understanding of the complex physics involved is obtained via a numerical approach that explicitly models the electromagnetic hot spot generation,electron-by-electron injection via multiphoton absorption,acceleration by ponderomotive forces and electron-water interaction through random elastic and inelastic *** model predicts a critical electron density for bubble nucleation that nicely matches the experimental findings and reveals that the efficiency of energy transfer from the plasmonic hot spot to the free electron cloud is much more efficient(17 times higher)in water than in a *** of their high kinetic energy and large reduction potential,these proposed wet hot electrons may provide new opportunities in photocatalysis,electrochemical processes and hot-electron driven chemistry.

Applied bias photon-to-current conversion efficiency of ZnO enhanced by hybridization with reduced graphene oxide

The role of reduced graphene oxide（rGO） in the enhancement of photo-conversion efficiency of ZnO films for photoelectrochemical（PEC） water-splitting applications was analyzed. ZnO and rGO-hybridized ZnO（rGO/ZnO） films were prepared via a two-step electrochemical deposition method followed by annealing at 300 °C under argon gas flow. The physical, optical and electrochemical properties of the films were characterized to identify the effect of rGO-hybridization on the applied bias photon-to-current efficiency（ABPE） of ZnO. Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction indicated the formation of verticallyaligned, wurtzite-phase ZnO nanorods. Diffuse-reflectance UV–visible spectroscopy indicated that rGO-hybridization was able to increase the light absorption range of the rGO/ZnO film. UPS analysis showed that hybridization with rGO increased the band gap of ZnO（3.56 eV） to 3.63 eV for rGO/ZnO sample,which may be attributed to the Burstein–Moss effect. Photoluminescence（PL） spectra disclosed that rGOhybridization suppressed electron-hole recombination due to crystal defects. Linear sweep voltammetry of the prepared thin films showed photocurrent density of 1.0 and 1.8 m A/cm;for ZnO and rGO/ZnO at+0.7 V, which corresponded to an ABPE of 0.55% and 0.95%, respectively. Thus, this report highlighted the multi-faceted role of rGO-hybridization in the enhancement of ZnO photo-conversion efficiency.

Carbon nitride nanoparticles (CNNPs) have been employed as fluorescent sensing tools owing to their unique features, e.g. low cost production, high stability in water and high photoluminescence quantum yield. Here, an easy and versatile synthetic approach was exploited to design fluorescent nanoparticles with surface functionalities suitable for covalent binding to bioligands. High hydrophilic, brightly fluorescent CNNPs, rich of superficial amines, were obtained from the thermal condensation of urea and lysine (CNNP^Lys) and by tuning the precursor ratio and the heating time. Structure and size of the functionalized nanoparticles were characterized through infrared (IR) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS). Their optical properties were studied by ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) and fluorescence spectroscopy. The superficial primary amino groups, furnished by the lysine co-precursor, enabled for covalently linking CNNP^Lys to model proteins. The CNNP^Lys-protein conjugates excited under UV irradiation emit in the 400-450 nm visible range (quantum yield 24%). The applicability of CNNP^Lys as novel fluorescent probes was demonstrated by a fluorescence quenching assay, in which gold nanoparticles (GNPs) were attached to Staphylococcal protein A and employed to quench the CNNP^Lys fluorescence by Forster resonant energy transfer (FRET). The quenching occurred upon formation of the specific binding between the GNP-linked protein A and CNNP^Lys-tagged immunoglobulins, while the inhibition of the binding resulted in the recovery of CNNP^Lys luminescence. The synthetic strategy, based on combining a "conjugated polymer"-forming unit (urea) and a co-precursor able to provide the desired functional group (lysine), allows designing innovative materials for the development of new generation fluorescence biosensors in which easily functionalized fluorophores are needed.

The extended discrete element method (XDEM) multi-physics and multi-scale simulation platform is being developed at the Institute of Computational Engineering, the University of Luxembourg. The platform is an advanced multi-physics simulation technology that combines flexibility and versatility to establish the next generation of multi-physics and multi-scale simulation tools. For this purpose, the simulation framework relies on coupling various predictive tools based on an Eulerian and Lagrangian approach. The Euleria n approach represents the wide field of con tinuum models;the Lagra ngian approach is perfect for characterising discrete phases. Continuum models thus include classical simulation tools, such as computational fluid dynamics simulation and finite element analysis, while an extended configuration of the classical discrete element method addresses the discrete (e.g., particulate) phase. Apart from predicting the trajectories of in dividual particles, XDEM-suite extends the application of the XDEM to estimating the thermodynamic state of each particle using advanced and optimised algorithms. The thermodynamic state may include temperature and species distributions due to chemical reaction and external heat sources. Hence, coupling these extended features with either computational fluid dynamics simulation or finite element analysis opens a wide range of applications as diverse as pharmaceuticals, agriculture, food processing, mining, construction and agricultural machinery, metals manufacturing, energy production and systems biology.
