We use the local Fourier analysis to determine the properties of the multigrid method when used in modeling the skin penetration of a drug. The analyses of these properties can be very in designing an efficient structure of the multigrid method and in comparing the element and finite difference discretization techniques. After the theoretical results obtained, we also present some numerical results for a problem for which the solution is known.

The sustainable development supposes a development strategy that would ensure the interdependence and complementarily of objectives from the social, economic and environmental fields. The degree of priority established for the three dimensions of sustainable development differs from one country to another, a fact that confers a national and local meaning to this issue. For the Central and Eastern European countries, balanced economic development represents one of the fundamental objectives of the reforms started in 1990. Education represents a priority of any country＇s economic development and an extremely important element of economic growth. This paper presents the characteristics of the Romanian educational system while achieving a comparative analysis regarding different countries of the European Union, both from a quantitative viewpoint （using the main indicators in the education field） and a qualitative viewpoint （using student performances in international evaluations）. In the end, we present some proposals for the improvement of the present state of the Romanian educational system.

Analogs of Antifungal Indoles Isolated from Aporpium Caryae with Activity Against Sudden-Death Syndrome of Soybean

Based on the precedent discovery of a weak antifungal indole isolated from Aporpium caryae, which increased its activity when changing the N-alkyl chain, nineteen N-alkyl indoles, with alkyl chains from one to ten carbons and one or two hydroxyls, one amine or bromine functional groups, were prepared and fully characterized by spectroscopic methods. The aim of this study is the search for new synthetic agrochemical leads derived from natural products. The antifungal activity of the synthesized compounds against three fungal strains was measured in vitro. Six compounds presented good activity against Fusarium virguliforme, the causal agent of sudden-death syndrome (SDS) in soybean, in a bioautography assay. Four of them were tested in a germination test and in a greenhouse experiment. All tested compounds, applied as seed treatment, showed antifungal properties being effective to control SDS when there was low level of fungal contamination. Results indicate that some of the tested compounds are acting as growth inhibitors and represent new leads for the treatment of SDS for which no specific treatment has been previously reported.

Herbivory and Plant genotype Influence Fitness-Related Responses of<i>Arabidopsis thaliana</i>to Indirect Plant-Plant Interactions

Previous studies have demonstrated that genetic identity between interacting perennial plants results in more effective defense when emitter and receiver neighbors have greater genetic similarity. However, the effects of both genetic relatedness and presence of herbivores on fitness-related responses of neighboring plants have not yet been explored. Our aim was to examine how manipulating these two important factors genetic and environmental factors can influence indirect plant-plant communication in the annual crucifer Arabidopsis thaliana. Plants of a single genotype (receivers) were exposed to volatile emissions of neighboring emitter plants with a similar or different genotype, and either intact or damaged by larvae of a specialist herbivore for ten days. Each of the four treatments was isolated in separate environmental chambers and the full experiment was replicated twice. Receiver plant growth and reproductive-related traits were measured ten days after exposure to treatments, and at senescence. Results showed that the effect of herbivory and plant genotype of emitter plants influenced responses related growth and reproduction in receiver plants. Receiver plants grew taller, had more inflorescence branching, and produced more fruits (60% more) when exposed to undamaged emitters of a different genotype than receivers exposed to the other emitter plant treatments. Therefore, genotype identity and environmental context (presence of herbivory) may be important factors influencing indirect plant-plant communication, which could, in turn, result in selection for genotypes showing increased fitness-related responses.

glucosinolates and their hydrolysis products, found in plants of the order Brassicales, are well-known for their defensive properties against insect herbivores. Arabidopsis thaliana (Col-0) genetic lines with mutations that modify the type of glucosinolates (i.e. myb28myb29 and cyp79B2cyp79B3 are deficient in the production of aliphatic and indolyl glucosinolates, respectively) make it possible to test for the specific effects of these secondary chemicals on insect herbivores. The Pad3 mutant (deficient in camalexin), which has a role in resistance to pathogens, was also tested. Likewise, the effects of different glucosinolate hydrolysis products can be evaluated using genetically modified (gM) lines of the wild type Col-0 ecotype, which naturally produces isothiocyanates. These gM lines include the nitrile-producing 35S: ESP and the double knockout tgg1tgg2, which virtually lacks hydrolysis products. In both no-choice and choice experiments, the crucifer specialist Pieris rapae was virtually unaffected by differences in the type of glucosinolates or hydrolysis products. In contrast, the generalist insect Spodoptera exigua had statistically significant increases in pupae/adult weight and faster developmental times when reared on mutants deficient in the production of aliphatic and indolyl glucosinolates and their hydrolysis products. There were no differences in the performance of either insect species when reared on wild type Col-0 or Pad3. Results from feeding choice trials showed that Pieris rapae had no statistically significant preference for any of the genetic lines. In contrast, Spodoptera exigua had a significant feeding preference for the double mutant tgg1tgg2. This study provides evidence that variation in the type of glucosinolates and their hydrolysis products can influence insect performance and feeding choices, and that responses are species-specific.

g>Background:g> Information and communication technologies have revolutionized education, due to development of didactic strategies to take advantage of them for maximizing learning. The aim was to analyze the influence of immersion tools as a strategy to improve adolescents’ mental health. g>Methods:g> Qualitative research was employed, and participants’ experiences, opinions, values, behaviors, emotions, feelings were recorded. Twenty six students of both sexes, aged 13 to 15 years, from the three grades of secondary school were selected by convenience, and supported by the school’s psychologist. A workshop on emotional intelligence (EI) based on educational technology was implemented using a video;students practiced a reflexive process to understand themselves and their surroundings, creating a video + audio as a product of the workshop. In it, students analyzed several problems they face and their relationship with their contextual situation. Data collection was through semi-structured interviews before and after the workshop on EI. Data analysis was according to Souza Minayo, and the theoretical framework according to goleman, Tapia et al., gorostieta et al., and Vigotsky. g>Results: g>Two categories emerged: Category g>Ig>, EI as a risk factors transformer from living with addictions to protection factors in adolescents. Standardization of choroidal thickness measurements using enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography

AIM: To describe and evaluate a standardized protocol for measuring the choroidal thickness(Ch T) using enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography(EDI OCT).METHODS: Single 9 mm EDI OCT line scans across the fovea were used for this study. The protocol used in this study classified the EDI OCT images into four groups based on the appearance of the choroidal-scleral interface and suprachoroidal space. Two evaluation iterations of experiments were performed: first, the protocol was validated in a pilot study of 12 healthy eyes. Afterwards, the applicability of the protocol was tested in 82 eyes of patients with diabetes. Inter-observer and intra-observer agreements on image classifications were performed using Cohen’s kappa coefficient(κ). Intraclass correlation coefficient(ICC) and Bland-Altman’s methodology were used for the measurement of the Ch ***: There was a moderate(κ=0.42) and perfect(κ =1) inter- and intra-observer agreements on image classifications from healthy eyes images and substantial(κ =0.66) and almost perfect(κ =0.86) agreements from diabetic eyes images. The proposed protocol showed excellent inter- and intra-observer agreements for the Ch T measurements on both, healthy eyes and diabetic eyes(ICC >0.90 in all image categories). The Bland-Altman plot showed a relatively large Ch T measurement agreement in the scans that contained less visible choroidal outer boundary. CONCLUSION: A protocol to standardize Ch T measurements in EDI OCT images has been developed;the results obtained using this protocol show that the technique is accurate and reliable for routine clinical practice and research.

The molecular basis of the carcinogenesis of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) has not been adequately clarified, which negatively impacts the development of targeted therapy protocols for this overwhelming neoplasia. The aberrant activation of signaling in the HCC is primarily due to the deregulated expression of the components of the Wnt-/-β-catenin. This leads to the activation of β-catenin/T-cell factor-dependent target genes that control cell proliferation, cell cycle, apoptosis, and cell motility. The deregulation of the Wnt pathway is an early event in hepatocarcinogenesis. An aggressive phenotype was associated with HCC, since this pathway is implicated in the proliferation, migration, and invasiveness of cancer cells, regarding the cell's own survival. The disruption of the signaling cascade Wnt-/-β-catenin has shown anticancer properties in HCC's clinical evaluations of therapeutic molecules targeted for blocking the Wnt signaling pathway for the treatment of HCC, and it represents a promising perspective. The key to bringing this strategy in to clinical practice is to identify new molecules that would be effective only in tumor cells with aberrant signaling β-catenin.
