rong>Introduction:rong> Epilepsy is considered a chronic neurological condition that manifests itself with seizures, where 30% - 40% of patients do not achieve control of their seizures despite proper management. Seizures represent a significant limitation in the patient’s daily activities and are often accompanied by emotional and relational difficulties that have a great impact on the quality of life of the patient and their families. Cannabidiol (CBD) has been found to be effective in controlling seizures and may also improve cognitive and behavioral abilities. rong>Material and Methods:rong> The Quality of Life of the Patient with Epilepsy (CAVE) scale was applied to patients with refractory epilepsies who use Cannabidiol (CBD) added to their base therapy, before the use of CBD and after 12 months of follow-up. The presentation of collateral effects was also evaluated. rong>results:rong> Out of 34 patients, 26 (76.5%) increased their CAVE value at the end of the study and only 1 (2.9%) decreased. 19 (55.9%) improved in learning and behavior, 55.8% in the frequency of seizures and 79.4% reported a decrease in the intensity of seizures. There were other positive side effects such as improvement in alertness, language, sleep and behavior. The main side effects were mild and transitory, including drowsiness, and constipation. There was a correlation between the global perception of improvement and seizure control. rong>Conclusions:rong> This study shows that in the long term CBD improves the quality of life of patients with refractory epilepsies, through the control of seizures and the improvement of cognitive and behavioral functions.

Norepinephrine plays an important role in motor functional recovery after a brain injury caused by ferrous chloride.Inhibition of norepinephrine release by clonidine is correlated with motor deficits after motor cortex injury.The aim of this study was to analyze the role ofα-adrenergic receptors in the restoration of motor deficits in recovering rats after brain damage.The rats were randomly assigned to the sham and injury groups and then treated with the following pharmacological agents at 3 hours before and 8 hours,3 days,and 20 days after ferrous chloride-induced cortical injury:saline,clonidine,efaroxan(a selective antagonist ofα-adrenergic receptors)and clonidine+efaroxan.The sensorimotor score,the immunohistochemical staining forα-adrenergic receptors,and norepinephrine levels were evaluated.Eight hours post-injury,the sensorimotor score and norepinephrine levels in the locus coeruleus of the injured rats decreased,and these effects were maintained 3 days post-injury.However,20 days later,clonidine administration diminished norepinephrine levels in the pons compared with the sham group.This effect was accompanied by sensorimotor deficits.These effects were blocked by efaroxan.In conclusion,an increase inα-adrenergic receptor levels was observed after injury.Clonidine restores motor deficits in rats recovering from cortical injury,an effect that was prevented by efaroxan.The underlying mechanisms involve the stimulation of hypersensitiveα-adrenergic receptors and inhibition of norepinephrine activity in the locus coeruleus.The results of this study suggest thatαreceptor agonists might restore deficits or impede rehabilitation in patients with brain injury,and therefore pharmacological therapies need to be prescribed cautiously to these patients.

Personalized Federated Learning for Individual Consumer Load Forecasting

Installation of smart meters enables electricity retailers or consumers to implement individual load forecasting for demand response.An individual load forecasting model can be trained either on each consumer’s own smart meter data or the smart meter data of multiple consumers.The former practice may suffer from overfitting if a complex model is trained because the dataset is limited;the latter practice cannot protect the privacy of individual consumers.This paper tackles the dilemma by proposing a personalized federated approach for individual consumer load forecasting.Specifically,a group of consumers first jointly train a federated forecasting model on the shared smart meter data pool,and then each consumer personalizes the federated forecasting model on their own data.Comprehensive case studies are conducted on an open dataset of 100 households.results verify the proposed method can enhance forecasting accuracy by making full use of data from other consumers with privacy protection.

Enhanced biological wastewater treatment using sodium alginate-immobilized microorganisms in a fluidized bed reactor

In this study,a microbial consortium isolated from an activated sludge tank of a conventional wastewater treatment plant was immobilized using sodium alginate(SA)as a support material for contaminant biodegradation in wastewater.A volume of 500 mL of activated sludge was immobilized in the SA beads(with a mass concentration of 25 g/L).The resulting SA beads were characterized,introduced into a fluidized bed reactor,fed with 1000 mL of the sample,and characterized again after the treatment process.The SA-immobilized microorganisms were tested first for degradation of organic matter(expressed as chemical oxygen demand)and total phosphorous in domestic wastewater,achieving removal efficiencies of 71%and 93%,respectively,after 12 h.Subsequently,the SA-immobilized microorganisms were tested for degradation of a basic blue 9(BB9)textile dye in a condition that simulated textile wastewater.The efficiency of the BB9 degradation was found to be as high as 99.5%after 2 h.According to these results,SA-immobilized microorganisms were found to be an environmentally friendly and cost-effective alternative for treatment of municipal and industrial wastewater effluents.

Detection and determination of undeclared synthetic caffeine in weight loss formulations using HPLC-DAD and UHPLC-MS/MS

Caffeine is present in products marketed for weight loss, with the purpose of increasing thermogenesis and lipid metabolism. The dosage declared by the product manufacturer, or even its presence, is not always correctly described on the label. This work aimed to investigate the undeclared synthetic caffeine in weight loss formulations by a high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection(HPLC-DAD) method. From one hundred products purchased through Brazilian e-commerce, seventeen contained caffeine, either naturally or synthetically added to formulation. The caffeine-containing samples were confirmed by an ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry(UHPLC-MS/MS) method, and adulteration was clearly proven in five products. The content highest caffeine contained 448.8 mg per dose. Other irregularities were also found; nevertheless, the most serious was the addition of synthetic drugs without asking the consumers. Additional drugs expose the consumer to more possible side-effects as well as deleterious drug interactions. Intentional adulteration with any unlabeled substance is typically motivated by a desire to increase or alter the claimed effect of the marketed product to gain a commercial advantage.

In nature,changes in O_(2) levels occur frequently.An inadequate supply of oxygen often happens in living systems,which induces an imbalance between oxygen entering cells and their oxygen demand to produce energy.The condition is known as hypoxia.Although hypoxia takes place in multiple physiological processes,it can be a primary cause of cellular injury and death(Nystul and roth,2004).Consequently,cells and tissues are habitually at risk,and they have developed many strategies to cope with low oxygen levels leading to pathological conditions(Fawcett et al.,2015).These adaptative responses to hypoxia though not entirely understood,seem to be evolutively conserved.Notwithstanding these responses,hypoxia can still have harmful effects.

Hydrogen evolution kinetics on Ni cathodes modified by spontaneous deposition of Ag or Cu

Nickel modification by spontaneous deposition of transition metals such as Ag and Cu is shown as an economic and simple alternative for the activation of hydrogen evolution reaction（HEr） on cathodes in alkaline media. The kinetics of HEr is studied on Ni/Ag and Ni/Cu catalysts by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy（EIS） using a rotating disk electrode（rDE）. Freshly synthesized catalysts, as well as catalysts subjected to a short chronoamperometric ageing procedure, are analyzed and the kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of the HEr are obtained. The nickel surface modified with transition metals with an outer shell electronic configuration [xd;（x+1）s;], such as Cu(3d;4s;)and Ag(4d;5s;), shows an improved activity for the HEr compared to bare nickel. Furthermore, the Ni/Cu catalyst presents a decreased onset potential. The hydrogen evolution rate, measured as current density at –1.5 V（vs. SCE）, is similar on Ni/Cu and Ni/Ag electrodes.

Potential Changes in Net Primary Productivity and Carbon Input of Periurban Agroecosystems Treated with Biosolids in Buenos Aires, Argentina

Biosolids application in periurban agroecosystems could mitigate climate change by sequestering C, while improving plant net primary production(NPP). Monitoring NPP is useful for studying ecological responses to human management. The values of NPP and C input in periurban agroecosystems are insufficient or missing. The objective was to use local databases to estimate NPP and C input in periurban areas(south, north and west) of Buenos Aires City, Argentina, using different biosolids application scenarios(low and high effects). The NPP varied with crop and vegetable types(P riticum aestivum) presenting the highest production, soybean(Glycine max) medium and sunflower(Helianthus annuus) the lowest. Tomato(Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) presented the highest production in the south area(La Plata). West and north areas, where Vertic and Typic Argiudolls are the main soils, presented the lowest NPP and C input. According to the low and high effect scenarios,only vegetables presented significant differences(P rage and cumulative NPP and C input between areas. Vegetables contributed with the highest proportion(> 70%) to NPP in both projected scenarios. For both scenarios, average C input by crops and vegetables presented similar proportions. Biosolids addition in periurban agroecosystems could be a viable practice to elevate NPP and C input.

Application of platelet-rich plasma with stem cells in bone and periodontal tissue engineering

Presently, there is a high paucity of bone grafts in the United States and worldwide. regenerating bone is of prime concern due to the current demand of bone grafts and the increasing number of diseases causing bone loss. Autogenous bone is the present gold standard of bone regeneration. However, disadvantages like donor site morbidity and its decreased availability limit its use. Even allografts and synthetic grafting materials have their own limitations. As certain specific stem cells can be directed to differentiate into an osteoblastic lineage in the presence of growth factors(GFs), it makes stem cells the ideal agents for bone regeneration.Furthermore, platelet-rich plasma(PrP), which can be easily isolated from whole blood, is often used for bone regeneration, wound healing and bone defect repair. When stem cells are combined with PrP in the presence of GFs, they are able to promote osteogenesis. This review provides in-depth knowledge regarding the use of stem cells and PrP in vitro, in vivo and their application in clinical studies in the future.

Oxidative effects of glyphosate on the lipophobic intracellular environment in the microalgae Chlorella vulgaris

The studied hypothesis is that the herbicide glyphosate(GLY)can affect the oxidative balance in the hydrophobic intracellular medium in non-target Chlorella vulgaris cells.Analytical GLY and roundUp(rUP)supplementation,affected the growth profile.A significant 42%decrease in the cellular biomass in stationary(St)phase was observed in cultures supplemented with either 5μM of GLY or rUP,as compared to control cultures.The treatment with 0.3μM of GLY generated non-significant effects on the oxidation rate of 2’,7’dichlorofluorescein diacetate(DCFH-DA),neither in exponential(Exp)nor in St phase of development,as compared to control cultures.However,the treatment with either 5μM GLY or 0.3 and 5μM rUP lead to a significant decrease in the DCFH-DA oxidation rate,as compared to control cultures.The lipid radical(Lr●)generation rate,detected by Paramagnetic resonance Spectroscopy(EPr),was significantly increased in the presence of rUP,in Lag and Exp phase of growth.The non-enzymatic antioxidants,α-Tocopherol(α-T)andβ-Carotene(β-C),are aimed to protect membranes against the damage produced by the radical reactions.The content ofβ-C was not significantly affected,as compared to control cultures,by any of the treatments,in both growth phases of cellular development.The content ofα-T was significantly decreased by the supplementation with either 0.3 or 5μM of rUP or 5μM GLY.The Lr●/α-T ratio,used as indicator of the oxidative balance in the hydrophobic cellular media,was significantly different between samples obtained from control and rUP-exposed microalgae in both,Exp and St phase of development,with either 0.3 or 5μM rUP.The data presented here showed evidence that suggested that oxidative balance in the hydrophobic environment was affected by either GLY or rUP.
