Noninvasive imaging assessment of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease:focus on liver scintigraphy

Noninvasive diagnoses of nonalcoholic fatty-liver disease(NAFLD) involve the use of serologic markers and imaging methods, such as conventional ultrasonography(US),computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. Although these methods are reliable for the noninvasive detection of moderate to severe fatty changes in the liver, they are not reliable for detecting nonalcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH) and fibrosis. New imaging technologies, such as US-based transient elastography, acoustic radiation force impulse and magnetic resonancebased elastography, can reportedly be used to determine the severity of liver fibrosis associated with NASH. In this context, the field of nuclear medicine through liver scintigraphy has recently been proposed, and is being explored for use in the diagnosis of NASH. More importantly, nuclear medicine may contribute to the distinction between simple steatosis and NASH. For example, the enhanced release of cytokines and the decrease in the phagocytic activity of Kupffer cells play important roles in the pathogenesis of NASH. Removal of technetium-99 m colloid from circulation by Kupffer cell phagocytosis therefore provides a valuable imaging technique. Thus, nuclear medicine is poised to provide useful tools for the evaluation of patients with NAFLD. However, the evidence is still scarce, and more studies with larger samples are needed to identify their role before they are used in clinical practice.

Ursane derivatives isolated from leaves of Hylocereus undatus inhibit glycation at multiple stages

The present study was designed to evaluate the therapeutic potential of bioactive compounds from chloroform extract of the leaves of Hylocereus undatus in the formation of advanced glycation end products(AGEs) in vitro. Bioactivity-guided fractionation of chloroform extract from Hylocereus undatus afforded two novel 12-ursen-type triterpenes, 3β, 16α, 23-trihydroxy-urs-12-en-28-oic acid(1) and 3β, 6β, 19α, 22α-tetrahydroxy-urs-12-en-28-oic acid(2), as well as four known triterpenes 2α, 3β, 23-tetrahydroxy-urs-11-en-28-oic acid(3), 3β-acetoxy-28-hydroxyolean-12-ene(4), 3β, 16α-dihidroxyolean-12-ene(5) and 3β-acetoxy-olean-12-ene(6). Our results revealed that triterpenes 1–3 were able to inhibit the formation of AGEs in all tested assays. The data indicated that the triterpenes had inhibitory activity at the múltiple stages of glycation and that there might be a high potential for decreasing protein oxidation and protein glycation that can enhance glycative stress in diabetic complications.

potential Changes in Net primary productivity and Carbon Input of periurban Agroecosystems Treated with Biosolids in Buenos Aires, Argentina

Biosolids application in periurban agroecosystems could mitigate climate change by sequestering C, while improving plant net primary production(Npp). Monitoring Npp is useful for studying ecological responses to human management. The values of Npp and C input in periurban agroecosystems are insufficient or missing. The objective was to use local databases to estimate Npp and C input in periurban areas(south, north and west) of Buenos Aires City, Argentina, using different biosolids application scenarios(low and high effects). The Npp varied with crop and vegetable types(p presenting the highest production, soybean(Glycine max) medium and sunflower(Helianthus annuus) the lowest. Tomato(Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) presented the highest production in the south area(La plata). West and north areas, where Vertic and Typic Argiudolls are the main soils, presented the lowest Npp and C input. According to the low and high effect scenarios,only vegetables presented significant differences(p pp and C input between areas. Vegetables contributed with the highest proportion(> 70%) to Npp in both projected scenarios. For both scenarios, average C input by crops and vegetables presented similar proportions. Biosolids addition in periurban agroecosystems could be a viable practice to elevate Npp and C input.

We are entering a new era of gravitational-wave astronomy. The ground-based interferometers have reached their initial design sensitivity in the audio band. Several upper limits have been set for anticipated astrophysical sources from the science data. The advanced detectors in the US and in Europe are expected to be operational around 2015. New advanced detectors are also planned in Japan and in India. The first direct detections of gravitational waves are expected within this decade. In the meanwhile, three pulsar timing array projects are forming an international collaboration to detect gravitational waves directly in the nanoHertz range using timing data from millisecond pulsars. The first direct detection of nanoHertz gravitational waves are also expected within this decade. In this paper, we review the status of current gravitational-wave detectors, possible types of sources, observational upper limits achieved, and future prospects for direct detection of gravitational waves

Red pigment production by penicillium purpurogenum GH2 is influenced by pH and temperature

The combined effects of pH and temperature on red pigment production and fungal morphology were evaluated in a submerged culture of penicillium purpurogenum GH2, using Czapek-Dox media with D-xylose as a carbon source. An experimental design with a factorial fix was used: three pH values (5, 7, and 9) and two temperature levels (24 and 34 °C) were evaluated. The highest production of red pigment (2.46 g/L) was reached with a pH value of 5 and a temperature of 24 °C. Biomass and red pigment production were not directly associated. This study demon- strates that p. purpurogenum GH2 produces a pigment of potential interest to the food industry. It also shows the feasibility of producing and obtaining natural water-soluble pigments for potential use in food industries. A strong combined effect (ppH and temperature was associated with maximal red pigment production (2.46 g/L).

Exploring innovative synthetic solutions for advanced polymer-based electrochromic energy storage devices:phenoxazine as a promising chromophore

The current investigation offers an innovative synthetic solution regarding electrochromic(EC)and energy storage applications by exploring phenoxazine(pOZ)***,three pOZ-based polymers(polyimide,polyazomethine,and polyamide)were synthesized to ascertain the superior *** polyamide exhibited remarkable attributes,including high redox stability during 500 repetitive CVs,optical contrast of 61.98%,rapid response times of 1.02 and 1.38 s for coloring and bleaching,EC efficiency of 280 cm^(2)C^(-1).and decays of the optical density and EC efficiency of only 12.18%and 6.23%after 1000 ***,the energy storage performance of polyamide pA was tested,for which the following parameters were obtained:74.7 F g^(-1)(CV,scan rate of 10 mV s^(-1))and 118 F g^(-1)(GCD,charging current of 0.1 A g^(-1)).Then,the polyamide was tested in EES devices,which yielded the following EC parameters:an optical contrast of 62.15%,response times of 9.24 and 5.01 s for coloring and bleaching,EC efficiency of 178 cm^(2)C^(-1),and moderate decays of 20.25%and 23.24%for the optical density and EC efficiency after 500 *** energy storage performance included a capacitance of 106 F g^(-1)(CV,scan rate of 0.1 mV s^(-1))and 9.23 F g^(-1)(GCD,charging current of 0.1 A g^(-1)),capacitance decay of 11.9%after500 cycles,and 1.7 V retention after 2 ***,two EES devices connected in series powered a 3 V LED for almost 30 s.

Glutathione depleting drugs, antioxidants and intestinal calcium absorption

Glutathione （GSH） is a tripeptide that constitutes one of the main intracellular reducing compounds. The normal content of GSH in the intestine is essential to optimize the intestinal Ca2＋ absorption. The use of GSH depleting drugs such as DL-buthionine-S,R-sulfoximine, menadione or vitamin K3, sodium deoxycholate or diets enriched in fructose, which induce several features of the metabolic syndrome, produce inhibition of the intestinal Ca2＋ ab-sorption. The GSH depleting drugs switch the redox state towards an oxidant condition provoking oxida-tive/nitrosative stress and inflammation, which lead to apoptosis and/or autophagy of the enterocytes. Either the transcellular Ca transport or the paracellular Ca route are altered by GSH depleting drugs. The gene and/or protein expression of transporters involved in the transcellular Ca2＋ pathway are decreased. The favonoids quercetin and naringin highly abrogate the inhibition of intestinal Ca2＋ absorption, not only by restoration of the GSH levels in the intestine but also by their anti-apoptotic properties. Ursodeoxycholic acid, melatonin and glutamine also block the inhibition of Ca2＋ transport caused by GSH depleting drugs. The use of any of these antioxidants to ameliorate the intestinal Ca2＋ absorption under oxidant conditions associated with different pathologies in humans requires more investigation with regards to the safety,pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of them.
