Temporal niche overlap among insectivorous small mammals

Being active in the same environment at different times exposes animals to the effects of very different environmental factors,both biotic and *** the present study,we used live traps equipped with timing devices to evaluate the potential role of biotic factors(competition and food abundance)on overall overlap in the temporal niche axis of 4 insectivorous small mammals in high-elevation grassland fields(‘campos de altitude’)of southern *** on resources availability(invertebrates),data on animal captures were pooled in 2 seasons:‘scarcity’(June 2001−September 2001)and‘abundance’(november 2001-may 2002)*** tested for non-random structure in temporal niche overlap among the species in each *** species were the rodents Oxymycterus nasutus(Waterhouse,1837),Deltamys sp.,Akodon azarae(Fischer,1829),and the marsupial monodelphis brevicaudis Olfers,*** studied community was mainly diurnal with crepuscular *** using the Pianka index of niche overlap indicated that the empirical assemblage-wide overlap was not significantly different from randomly generated patterns in the abundance season but significantly greater than expected by chance alone in the scarcity *** the species showed an increase in temporal niche breadth during the abundance season,which appears to be related to longer daylength and high nocturnal *** on both temporal niche overlap and temporal niche breadth were the opposite to those that we were expecting in the case of diel activity patterns determined by competition for dietary ***,we conclude that competition did not seem to be preponderant for determining patterns of temporal niche overlap by the studied community.

Global Change Effects on Plant Chemical Defenses against Insect Herbivores

This review focuses on individual effects of major global change factors, such as elevated CO2, O3, UV light and temperature, on plant secondary chemistry. These secondary metabolites are well-known for their role in plant defense against insect herbivory. Global change effects on secondary chemicals appear to be plant species-specifc and dependent on the chemical type. Even though plant chemical responses induced by these factors are highly variable, there seems to be some specificity in the response to different environmental stressors. For example, even though the production of phenolic compounds is enhanced by both elevated CO2 and UV light levels, the latter appears to primarily increase the concentrations of flavonoids. Likewise, specific phenolic metabolites seem to be induced by O3 but not by other factors, and an increase in volatile organic compounds has been particularly detected under elevated temperature. more information is needed regarding how global change factors influence inducibility of plant chemical defenses as well as how their indirect and direct effects impact insect performance and behavior, herbivory rates and pathogen attack. This knowledge is crucial to better understand how plants and their associated natural enemies will be affected in future changing environments.

Using lysosomal membrane stability of haemocytes in Ruditapes philippinarum as a biomarker of cellular stress to assess contamination by caffeine, ibuprofen, carbamazepine and novobiocin

Although pharmaceuticals have beendetected in the environment only in the range from ng/L to μg/L, it has beendemonstrated that they can adversely affect the health status of aquatic organisms. Lysosomal membrane stability （LmS） has previously been applied as an indicator of cellularwell-being todetermine health status in bivalve mussels. The objective of this study is to evaluate LmS in Ruditapes philippinarum haemolymph using the neutral red retention assay （nRRA）. Clamswere exposed in laboratory conditions to caffeine （0.1, 5, 15, 50 μg/L）, ibuprofen （0.1, 5, 10, 50 μg/L）, carbamazepine and novobiocin （both at 0.1, 1, 10, 50 μg/L） for35days. Results show adose-dependent effect of the pharmaceuticals. The neutral red retention time measured at the end of the bioassaywas significantly reduced by 50% after exposure to environmental concentrations （p 〈 0.05）（caffeine = 15 μg/L; ibuprofen = 10 μg/L; carbamazepine = 1 μg/L and novobiocin = 1 μg/L）, compared to controls. Clams exposed to these pharmaceuticalswere considered to present adiminished health status （retention time 〈45 min）, significantlyworse than controls （96 min）（p 〈 0.05）. The predicted no environmental effect concentration （PnEC） results showed that these pharmaceuticals are very toxic at the environmental concentrations tested. measurement of the alteration of LmS has been found to be a sensitive technique that enables evaluation of the health status of clams after exposure to pharmaceuticals under laboratory conditions, thus representing a robust Tier-1 screening biomarker.

Detection and determination of undeclared synthetic caffeine in weight loss formulations using HPLC-DAD and UHPLC-mS/mS

Caffeine is present in products marketed for weight loss, with the purpose of increasing thermogenesis and lipid metabolism. The dosage declared by the product manufacturer, or even its presence, is not always correctly described on the label. This work aimed to investigate the undeclared synthetic caffeine in weight loss formulations by a high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection(HPLC-DAD) method. From one hundred products purchased through Brazilian e-commerce, seventeen contained caffeine, either naturally or synthetically added to formulation. The caffeine-containing samples were confirmed by an ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry(UHPLC-mS/mS) method, and adulteration was clearly proven in five products. The content highest caffeine contained 448.8 mg per dose. Other irregularities were also found; nevertheless, the most serious was the addition of synthetic drugs without asking the consumers. Additional drugs expose the consumer to more possible side-effects as well as deleterious drug interactions. Intentional adulteration with any unlabeled substance is typically motivated by a desire to increase or alter the claimed effect of the marketed product to gain a commercial advantage.

In this paper we give a survey about the Roper-Suffridge extension operator and the developments in the theory of univalent mappings in several variables to which it has led. We begin with the basic geometric properties (most of which now have a number of different proofs)and discuss relations with the theory of Loewner chains and generalizations and modifications of the operator, some of which are very recent.

Computer-aided sperm analysis： a useful tool to evaluate patient＇s response to varicocelectomy

Preoperative and postoperative sperm parameter values from infertile men with varicocele were analyzed by computer-aided sperm analysis （CASA） to assess if sperm characteristics improved after varicocelectomy. Semen samples of men with proven fertility （n = 38） and men with varicocele-related infertility （n = 61） were also analyzed. Conventional semen analysis was performed according to WHO （2010） criteria and a CASA system was employed to assess kinetic parameters and sperm concentration. Seminal parameters values in the fertile group were very far above from those of the patients, either before or after surgery. no significant improvement in the percentage normal sperm morphology （P = 0. 10）, sperm concentration （P = 0.52）, total sperm count （P = 0.76）, subjective motility （%）（P = 0.97） nor kinematics （P = 0.30） was observed after varicocelectomy when all groups were compared. neither was significant improvement found in percentage normal sperm morphology （P = 0.91）, sperm concentration （P =0. 10）, total sperm count （P = 0.89） or percentage motility （P = 0.77） after varicocelectomy in paired comparisons of preoperative and postoperative data. Analysis of paired samples revealed that the total sperm count （P = 0.01） and most sperm kinetic parameters： curvilinear velocity （P = 0.002）, straight-line velocity （P = 0.0004）, average path velocity （P = 0.0005）, linearity （P = 0.02）, and wobble （P = 0.006） improved after surgery. CASA offers the potential for accurate quantitative assessment of each patient＇s response to varicocelectomy.

Red pigment production by Penicillium purpurogenum GH2 is influenced by pH and temperature

The combined effects of pH and temperature on red pigment production and fungal morphology were evaluated in a submerged culture of Penicillium purpurogenum GH2, using Czapek-Dox media with D-xylose as a carbon source. An experimental design with a factorial fix was used: three pH values (5, 7, and 9) and two temperature levels (24 and 34 °C) were evaluated. The highest production of red pigment (2.46 g/L) was reached with a pH value of 5 and a temperature of 24 °C. Biomass and red pigment production were not directly associated. This study demon- strates that P. purpurogenum GH2 produces a pigment of potential interest to the food industry. It also shows the feasibility of producing and obtaining natural water-soluble pigments for potential use in food industries. A strong combined effect (pnd temperature was associated with maximal red pigment production (2.46 g/L).

Homeomorphic extension of strongly spirallike mappings in C^n

In this paper we consider a proper subclass nA of the full class of spirallike mappings on the Euclidean unit ball Bn in Cn with respect to a given linear operator A. We use the method of subordination chains to obtain an upper growth result for nA , and we obtain various examples of mappings in the same class of normalized biholomorphic mappings on the unit ball Bn in Cn . We also prove that the class nA is compact, while the full class of spirallike mappings with respect to a linear operator need not be compact in dimension n≥2, even when the operator is diagonal. This is one of the motivations for considering the class nA . Finally we prove that if f is a quasiregular strongly spirallike mapping on Bn such that ||[Df(z)]-1 Af(z)|| is uniformly bounded on Bn , then f extends to a homeomorphism of R2n onto itself. In addition, if A + A* = 2aI n for some a >0, this extension is also quasiconformal on R2n .

Yam hairiness is a complex concept, which generally cannot be completely defined by a single figure. Hairiness can be considered as the fiber ends and loops standing out from the main compact yarn body. Uster hairiness system characterizes the hairiness by H value, i.e. the mean value of the total length of all hairs within one centimeter of yarn. The raw data HI are in fact realization of spatial process （hairiness spatial process -- HSP） and can be used for more complex evaluation of hairiness characteristics in the space and frequency domain. The main aim of this contribution is description of some tools for spatial characterization of yarn hairiness. The simple methods for complex characterization of lISP statistical behavior （stationarity, independence, linearity etc. ） are presented. The techniques based on the embedding dimension and correlation integral or long-range dependences evaluation are discussed. The selected methods are core of HYARn program in mATLAB. Application of this program for deeper characterization of artificial data and cotton type yam are shown.
