In this paper we consider extreme points and support points for compact subclasses of normalized biholomorphic mappings of the Euclidean unit ball Bn in Cn. We consider the class S0(Bn) of biholomorphic mappings on Bn which have parametric representation, i.e., they are the initial elements f (·, 0) of a Loewner chain f (z, t) = etz + ··· such that {e-tf (·, t)}t 0 is a normal family on Bn. We show that if f (·, 0) is an extreme point (respectively a support point) of S0(Bn), then e-tf (·, t) is an extreme point of S0(Bn) for t 0 (respectively a support point of S0(Bn) for t ∈[0, t0] and some t0 > 0). This is a generalization to the n-dimensional case of work due to Pell. Also, we prove analogous results for mappings which belong to S0(Bn) and which are bounded in the norm by a fixed constant. We relate the study of this class to reachable sets in control theory generalizing work of Roth. Finally we consider extreme points and support points for biholomorphic mappings of Bn generated by using extension operators that preserve Loewner chains.

Circulating microRnAs as non-invasive biomarkers for hepatitis B virus liver fibrosis

Viruses can alter the expression of host microRnAs(miRnA s) and modulate the immune response during a persistent infection. The dysregulation of host miRnA s by hepatitis B virus(HBV) contributes to the proinflammatory and profibrotic changes within the liver. Multiple studies have documented the differential regulation of intracellular and circulating miRnA s during different stages of HBV infection. Circulating miRnA s found in plasma and/or extracellular vesicles can integrate data on viral-host interactions and on the associated liver injury. Hence, the detection of circulating miRnA s in chronic HBV hepatitis could offer a promising alternative to liver biopsy, as their expression is associated with HBV replication, the progression of liver fibrosis,and the outcome of antiviral treatment. The current review explores the available data on miRnA involvement in HBV pathogenesis with an emphasis on their potential use as biomarkers for liver fibrosis.

Aeration and sawdust application effects as structural material in the bioremediation of clayey acid soils contaminated with diesel oil

Soil contamination, due to the leakage of petroleum or its by-products, is a reason for concern nowadays. Technologies, such as bioremediation, have been developed to remove these pollutants from the environment. This paper aims to evaluate the bioremediation of clayey acid soils contaminated with diesel oil, comparing the effect of aeration use and the addition of different sawdust ratios (5% and 10%) as bulking material. This research was developed in three phases, with experiments of (a) natural attenuation (exclusively natural processes), (b) sawdust-amended soil and (c) aeration combined with sawdust addition. The manometric respirometry test was applied to monitor CO2 production during biodegradation experiments and sodium hydroxide (naOH) was used as an absorbent solution. The contamination of the samples was carried out by the addition of diesel oil (5% w/w (gg-1)) into the soil. The results indicated that natural attenuation presented a slower bioremediation process when compared to the treatments with sawdust addition. The addition of 5% of sawdust was beneficial to the microbial activity of the soil, but a proportion above 5% caused a negative effect on the samples, reducing the microbial activity. Statistical analysis (Kruskal-Wallis test) showed significant oil removals on experiments with the combination of sawdust and aeration. The aeration was considered the main agent in increasing oil biodegradation in the soil. The degradation rate reactions followed a zero-order linear model. The highest contaminant degradation rate was observed in the samples with 5% of sawdust and aeration (24.79 mgO2 kg-1dry soil day-1), which also improved microbial activity and diesel oil removal.

Ursane derivatives isolated from leaves of Hylocereus undatus inhibit glycation at multiple stages

The present study was designed to evaluate the therapeutic potential of bioactive compounds from chloroform extract of the leaves of Hylocereus undatus in the formation of advanced glycation end products(AGEs) in vitro. Bioactivity-guided fractionation of chloroform extract from Hylocereus undatus afforded two novel 12-ursen-type triterpenes, 3β, 16α, 23-trihydroxy-urs-12-en-28-oic acid(1) and 3β, 6β, 19α, 22α-tetrahydroxy-urs-12-en-28-oic acid(2), as well as four known triterpenes 2α, 3β, 23-tetrahydroxy-urs-11-en-28-oic acid(3), 3β-acetoxy-28-hydroxyolean-12-ene(4), 3β, 16α-dihidroxyolean-12-ene(5) and 3β-acetoxy-olean-12-ene(6). Our results revealed that triterpenes 1–3 were able to inhibit the formation of AGEs in all tested assays. The data indicated that the triterpenes had inhibitory activity at the múltiple stages of glycation and that there might be a high potential for decreasing protein oxidation and protein glycation that can enhance glycative stress in diabetic complications.

Standardization of choroidal thickness measurements using enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography

AIM: To describe and evaluate a standardized protocol for measuring the choroidal thickness(Ch T) using enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography(EDI OCT).METHODS: Single 9 mm EDI OCT line scans across the fovea were used for this study. The protocol used in this study classified the EDI OCT images into four groups based on the appearance of the choroidal-scleral interface and suprachoroidal space. Two evaluation iterations of experiments were performed: first, the protocol was validated in a pilot study of 12 healthy eyes. Afterwards, the applicability of the protocol was tested in 82 eyes of patients with diabetes. Inter-observer and intra-observer agreements on image classifications were performed using Cohen’s kappa coefficient(κ). Intraclass correlation coefficient(ICC) and Bland-Altman’s methodology were used for the measurement of the Ch ***: There was a moderate(κ=0.42) and perfect(κ =1) inter- and intra-observer agreements on image classifications from healthy eyes images and substantial(κ =0.66) and almost perfect(κ =0.86) agreements from diabetic eyes images. The proposed protocol showed excellent inter- and intra-observer agreements for the Ch T measurements on both, healthy eyes and diabetic eyes(ICC >0.90 in all image categories). The Bland-Altman plot showed a relatively large Ch T measurement agreement in the scans that contained less visible choroidal outer boundary. COnCLUSIOn: A protocol to standardize Ch T measurements in EDI OCT images has been developed;the results obtained using this protocol show that the technique is accurate and reliable for routine clinical practice and research.

Performance of cold-preserved rat liver Microorgans as the biological component of a simplified prototype model of bioartificial liver

AIM To develop a simplified bioartificial liver(BAL) device prototype, suitable to use freshly and preserved liver Microorgans(LMOs) as biological component. METHODS The system consists of 140 capillary fibers through which goat blood is pumped. The evolution of hema-tocrit, plasma and extra-fiber fluid osmolality was evaluated without any biological component, to characterize the prototype. LMOs were cut and cold stored 48 h in BG35 and Via Span~? solutions. Fresh LMOs were used as controls. After preservation, LMOs were loaded into the BAL and an ammonia overload was added. To assess LMOs viability and functionality, samples were taken to determine lactate dehydrogenase(LDH) release and ammonia detoxification capacity. RESULTS The concentrations of ammonia and glucose, and the fluids osmolalities were matched after the first hour of perfusion, showing a proper exchange between blood and the biological compartment in the minibioreactor. After 120 min of perfusion, LMOs cold preserved in BG35 and Via Span~? were able to detoxify 52.9% ± 6.5% and 53.6% ± 6.0%, respectively, of the initial ammonia overload. no significant differences were found with Controls(49.3% ± 8.8%, P ntrol LMOs, and 6.2% ± 1.7% and 14.3% ± 1.1% for BG35 and Via Span~? cold preserved LMOs, respectively(n = 6, P nCLUSIOn This prototype relied on a simple design and excellent performance. It’s a practical tool to evaluate the detoxification ability of LMOs subjected to different preservation protocols.
